Neighbours painted out new fence

refreshingseahorse · 07/08/2024 20:07

Discovered today that our neighbours have painted their side of our year old fence. They didn't ask. There are dribbles of paint coming through. I'll talk to them tomorrow but what is normal to ask for in this situation? For them to clean it? Replace it?
Thanks in advance

Imagine being so petty that you won’t even let a neighbour put a hanging basket up, utterly pathetic

Yep. Which the OP could take them to court over. And they would win. Which would include costs. Been there. Neighbours had to replace the fence.

Yeah, sure, 😂

This is not about you

It’s a discussion forum. For people to discuss things. Therefore yes, it is about her.

She has certainly brought more relevant input than you have.

No yeah sure about it. It’s very clearly set out in law and very easy to enforce.

I was that pathetic.

If you use crap paint that causes the fence I paid for to bow no way am I allowing you to put stuff on it so the panels themselves start cracking.

Now if you asked I would have paid - yes actually paid for your paint as long as I didn't have to do the bloody painting.

Luckily the paint peeled and cracked within a year so the fence is fine.

Imagine being so entitled that you think you can ruin someones fence that they worked hard for and paid for.

I can't believe this winds some people up! Who cares?!

Some people like their gardens though it's clear you don't.

Quite the range of opinions ! It's my fence on my side. It's a natural pale wood type colour and the paint is dark grey. They've pushed the brush through knotholes in a couple of places making a bit more of a splat pattern.

I absolutely understand your frustration but it's done now. I would give them the benefit of the doubt in that they didn't realise it was you who owned the fence.
We need to paint our fence and it was the neighbours who erected it before we moved in. We are going to have a chat with them regarding painting our side (there's is a common/depressing grey) Wish us luck, 😀

I’m an avid gardener, I’d still not take issue with a neighbour painting their side of the fence, in fact I’d encourage it.

Likewhatever · 07/08/2024 22:20

In your position OP I would paint your side Barbie pink and not be too careful about the dribbles.

ThursdayTomorrow · 07/08/2024 22:21

I would be happy for neighbours to paint their side of the fence. Don’t most people have shrubs in front of them anyway? They have to look at their side, let them enjoy their garden and make it their taste. A few dribbles wouldn’t worry me. I prefer to enjoy good relations with neighbours, sometimes it’s nice to think of others - it makes the world a better place. I’m sure it wasn’t a malicious act OP, they probably just wanted to make their garden look nice.

johnd2 · 07/08/2024 22:25

Fences are super ugly anyway, to make matters worse our neighbour paints their side what I would describe as burnt red, and the posts in white, including the tops of both (not to mention the drips and runs)
They keep all the plants tiny so the fence is totally in your face from their side! But that's what they like.
Our side is all bushes and shrubs so we hardly see the fence, I much prefer plants to fences.

Wigtopia · 07/08/2024 22:27

The fence will survive longer if it’s painted. If anything they’re looking after it. If it’s a few dribbles that have come through just a bit of sanding will remove it, but probably better if you paint your side!

mouse70 · 07/08/2024 22:34

Our new front garden fence was painted by neighbour on their side .Yes some dribbles came through so we asked them what colour they had bought and painted our side to match as we needed to paint it anyway. Needs re painting and we will do both sides to match as they are no longer able to do it themselves.

haplessharpy · 07/08/2024 22:40

It's a year old, not like you did it last week. I honestly wouldn't give a shit. Just sand it off or paint over it.....fucking hell. It's just a fence.

ineedtogwtoutbeforeitatoohot · 07/08/2024 22:42

So paint your side. Fences arnt meant to be unpainted unless they have been treated. They are allowed to paint their side.

Sinderalla · 07/08/2024 22:44

They shouldn't have painted it without asking. To correct it they well have to paint your side too...
Who paid for it?

No they aren’t. It’s not their fence.

Really? We spent nearly £6000 getting a new fence around our garden as by some poor luck we own all the bloody boundaries. We go away and on our return discover the neighbours on one side have painted their side black and the top rip resulting in thick black paint dripping down 8 fence panels on one side. It looked absolutely hideous.

we went round and asked them to fix it and they laughed and said no way. So we sent a firm solicitors letter reminding our boundary with instruction to return fence as is and removed historic permission for hanging baskets attached to our fence. They also cannot have any climbing parts. Made it clear if it went to court we would be seeking costs.

They took legal advice who told them they had no hope so they had to replace the entire fence.

sorry but absolutely no way am I paying thousands for a new fence to have it looking crap.

WTAF have I just read? 😂

Lilliesandjasmine · 07/08/2024 22:01

Yeah, sure, 😂

Yeah this is my stance too with a few 'neighbours had to buy me a new fence because I took them to court for painting it' posts.

They don’t have a side. Read the thread.

Print this out and put it through their door.
