Neighbours painted out new fence

Discovered today that our neighbours have painted their side of our year old fence. They didn't ask. There are dribbles of paint coming through. I'll talk to them tomorrow but what is normal to ask for in this situation? For them to clean it? Replace it?
Thanks in advance

Legally ndn has to agree a time that is convenient for you to paint /maintain that side of the fence. We had to get solicitors involved when our ndn went batshit over a new fence.... This is what we were told.

Its their side of the fence. Nothing to do with you!

Spot the person who paints their side irrespective of whether it's a new fence they didn't pay for, or if it leaks over the other side.

It’s the same in that one person has painted the property of someone else.

Its on their property, they're looking at it. Never had an issue with this ever. Had lots of properties. I paint my side they paint theirs. What ever they like. Whoever put it up. Worse things to worry about really.

Anewuser · 07/08/2024 20:34

I never knew this was a thing.

When we first moved in we treated all the wood panels and only afterwards did one neighbour become passive aggressive about it.

Twenty five years on, I realise you’re generally only responsible for one side of the garden in regard to owning/replacing fence panels.

I would give them benefit of the doubt or possibly suggest they treat your side entirely to tidy up the dribbles.

Longdueachange · 07/08/2024 20:34

Everyone commenting that it doesn't matter obviously hasn't paid for a new fence recently. Ask them to fix the damage op.

decionsdecisions62 · 07/08/2024 20:34

Who actually has ownership? I mean where is the boundary. If you've built your new fence on their boundary line then tough!

Sunburnisrareinscotland · 07/08/2024 20:35

The fence is op's. Ndn has no legal rights to attach anything to it or paint it.

refreshingseahorse · 07/08/2024 20:35

Quite the range of opinions ! It's my fence on my side. It's a natural pale wood type colour and the paint is dark grey. They've pushed the brush through knotholes in a couple of places making a bit more of a splat pattern.

Literally last year.

Go to the Garden Law forum and ask there.

Edited to say: my ex-neighbours did that but luckily my fence was a few years old. They clearly didn't use the right paint so while it looked like they had damaged the fence the paint actually peeled and cracked within a year so the fence is ok. They also hung things on the fence which I was able to lean over and remove. I tried to talk to them about it but they avoided me, so I wrote them a message telling them not to touch my fence. Funny thing was if they had asked I would have paid for decent paint as long as I didn't have to paint the damn thing. The new neighbours show no interest in their fences and are approachable.

Bellyblueboy · 07/08/2024 20:50

My neighbour asked - I said yes because you can’t really say no.

blue. BLUE I will say it again - BLUE - paint dribbled all down my side. Ruined the fence, I spent two days sanding as much it off as possible.

I have since moved and all fences are bounce. So no-one can ever paint the back of my fence - they have their own!

MissMoneyFairy · 07/08/2024 20:51

They should have at least asked first, its up to them to rectify any damage, show them what needs doing.

Theraffarian · 07/08/2024 20:51

Knowing how much our fence cost , I would be very annoyed if the neighbours painted it and left my side in a state . Might be different if it’s an old fence , but ours cost a little short of £700 for one side , and I expect to be able to enjoy it looking pristine for a fair while . Once it’s done though I’m not sure there is much that can be done to rectify it , paint isn’t going to sand off wood panels very easily . I guess I would paint it a colour I liked , and also pop round to say you were having to do it as their paint job had spoilt your side . They will then end up with the excess that seeps through , so it could turn into a never ending repainting job !

TeabySea · 07/08/2024 20:54

We paid for a fence in our garden and painted it. Our neighbour can see through trellis on the top and asked us not to paint the trellis as they didn't like the paint colour we've used.
We also painted our side of a different neighbours fence, but we told them we were going to do it, and did it on a day they were home so we could deal with any seepage of paint.

pizzatrucker · 07/08/2024 20:55

We have a shared fence but it is a two sided fence for this reason, we could see the neighbours had painted their other fences in a colour we would not choose so we chose a fence where their paint cannot bleed through but the panels are more expensive than the standard ones.

Legally a fence belongs to whoever paid for it and the non-payer cannot paint it or attach anything to it or grow anything up it. A lot of people here have 2 fences, where they put fences smack bang next to each other so that each person has 3 matching fence lines in their garden rather than 3 different ones if they are the neighbour's responsibility.

You can say "No".

They can then put their own fence right in front of yours on their land.

SleepySusan · 07/08/2024 21:04

I wish our neighbours would paint their side of our fence! The painting isn’t only cosmetic but protects the wood and ensures it lasts longer.

regarding the paint drips on your side, you could ask them to touch up or agree the same colour.

Startingagainandagain · 07/08/2024 21:11

Seriously, get a life...

happybluefern · 07/08/2024 21:12

As someone who has paid for a fence and their neighbours painted it blue on their side and some blue paint dribbled through - I thought, oh the blue looks quite nice on that side, and carried on with my life unperturbed.

Tbf if the blue paint has dribbled everywhere I would have been annoyed, I just got the odd splash, so there is a scale of ‘damage’ I suppose.

I've never ever seen anyone that petty. Do people like that really exist?

mondaytosunday · 07/08/2024 21:31

I asked my neighbours if I could paint my side of their fence. I was extremely careful so as not to cause any dribbles and didn't. I would be pissed off if a neighbour painted their side of my fence without permission and without due care. I didn't spend thousands doing up my garden to make it look like crap.

Usercoxiditsustxoycpucpyc · 07/08/2024 21:32

We’ve always painted our own sides, they do theirs, we do ours, not an issue.

Lilliesandjasmine · 07/08/2024 21:35

Just ask then to pop round with some sandpaper and sand it off, no big deal, if you’re petty enough to not want to do it yourself.

im still agog you think a perfectly good fence should be replaced because it was painted their side.

honeslty the stuff you read on here.
