Neighbours painted out new fence

refreshingseahorse · 07/08/2024 20:07

Discovered today that our neighbours have painted their side of our year old fence. They didn't ask. There are dribbles of paint coming through. I'll talk to them tomorrow but what is normal to ask for in this situation? For them to clean it? Replace it?
Thanks in advance

Its their side of the fence. Nothing to do with you!

This^^^

Id think my neighbour was insane if they asked me to replace a fence because of a few dribbles of paint. Perhaps technically they shouldn’t have done it, but most people paint their fence. It also helps preserve the fence doesn’t it? For the sake of neighbourly relations I wouldn’t start an issue over this.

But it's affected the side of the fence that wasn't theirs even if the fence is partly owned by them to begin with.

Lilliesandjasmine · 07/08/2024 20:12

You can’t seriously think they should replace your fence. Bloody hell. Sure they should have asked out of courtesy but I assume you’d have said yes, as it’d them that need to look at it.

replace it 🙄

HazelLion · 07/08/2024 20:12

Technically it's criminal damage for them to have painted your fence without your permission. It's your property, not theirs.

I would say something but leave it at that. Would you be able to sand off the bits of paint that have come through?

It's the OP's fence. All of it. Both sides. It's the same as you can't attach your washing line to the neighbour's house.

And factually the police would laugh in your face and tell you it was civil dispute.😂

It’s a few dribbles of paint, it can be sanded off.

It's not their fence.

No "your side/ their side"

They didn't pay for it, it's not theirs to paint

I would make it clear they have damaged your property tbh and they should have asked before painting. They should reimburse you for half the cost & you can spend that on getting a professional in to spray your side to disguise the damage.

We don't know how much, or even what colour. I'd be pissed off if I paid for a new fence and neighbours painted it. It's rude

The pettiness of some people is scary. Who gives a shit?

Hopebridge · 07/08/2024 20:20

We offered to do the wood protection for our neighbour when we did the fence (and paid for it). Tbf it does cost a lot of money to do a fence in some cases so I understand why you're upset. Our neighbours did the protection themselves but we provided the product.

Are you able to sand it off? You shouldn't have to do this and I would be annoyed at the extra work. They are probably oblivious as wouldn't be aware it's gone through from the other side. I imagine they will feel bad and want to put it right when you explain.

Totally beside the point, it's not theirs to make a mess of.

K0OLA1D · 07/08/2024 20:23

Me and my neighbours always paint our own side of the fences. Always have, in every home I have lived. So did my parents when I was younger.

I swear this is only a problem on mn

NonmagicMike · 07/08/2024 20:23

Very noisily and passive aggressively sand your side of the fence and chuck in a lot of tuts. It’s annoying but is it worth having a barney over!? Technically it’s all your property as it’s your boundary and your fence but in reality the police won’t care and are you going to pursue them for what resolution through the small claims court!?

If the fence was put in by the OP, then its her fence - both sides!

HoppityBun · 07/08/2024 20:25

My neighbours painted their side of my fence after I had expensive- for me- new panels put in. They have to look at it and, as it happens, that side faces north, so the panels get a bit of protection from the weather. Some paint showed through but I’d have thought it bizarre to object

Onehotday · 07/08/2024 20:26

I'd be raging and I would 100% ask them to come and sort my side out, if they couldn't then they'd have to replace it.

Would you ‘give a shit’ if I came and painted your house?

Not really the same is it🙄

Flossflower · 07/08/2024 20:28

I know this has come up before. There is a poster on MN who everyone respects who gives diy advice. Sorry I can’t remember their name. Anyway their advice was to power wash it from your side. I would be having a word with my neighbours.

It’s the same in that one person has painted the property of someone else.
