Neighbours painted out new fence

refreshingseahorse · 07/08/2024 20:07

Discovered today that our neighbours have painted their side of our year old fence. They didn't ask. There are dribbles of paint coming through. I'll talk to them tomorrow but what is normal to ask for in this situation? For them to clean it? Replace it?
Thanks in advance

It's not petty to expect something you've spent thousands on not to be ruined. Personally I wouldn't care if nothing seeped through to my side, but that can't be guaranteed. If it seeps through, it's doubtful sanding/washing will remove it.

Most fences don't need to be painted to preserve them - they're pressure treated. If you're using actual paint, you're just setting yourself up for much more future maintenance when they inevitably start to peel.

I've got an old fence that I'd love to paint. It was here when I moved in years ago... neither me nor my neighbour paid for it. I wouldn't chance it though as I'd feel bad if it made their side patchy. If I did it and they'd recently just bought it I'd be mortified.

I think someone mentioned PigletJohn earlier. I'm pretty sure during the last thread about this when someone said of course they could paint it as they're the ones that look at it everyday, he asked them if it was also OK to paint half of next doors car, seeing as it faced them most days 😂

Yes thank you,I was the one who remembered PigletJohn. I just couldn’t remember the name.
I have a side fence/gate in pressure treated wood. It has been there 25 years and never been painted. The wood is still in perfect condition. It is my personal preference to have a faded look, not an in your face bright/dark fence shade so I would take offence if someone painted my fence.

good grief. On what planet is paining a fence ruining it. Usually it’s fence paint that protects it. And if you want to paint your fence paint it. Just be careful . You act like you don’t know paint fencing is a thing.

TippledPink · 08/08/2024 12:37

My neighbour painted their side of my fence. We are in a new build estate and the fence was warped so the developers had to replace it as a snag. Unfortunately because the neighbours painted the fence my warranty was void and they refused to replace it- not really fair on me, I didn't paint my fence but now I have to shell out as my neighbour painted my property!

BeeCucumber · 08/08/2024 12:48

I really don’t understand why it’s so difficult for some pp to appreciate that you cannot paint a fence that doesn’t belong to you. My neighbour has spent £k on a fence along our boundary. I’m sure she would be thrilled if I thought it would be ok to paint “my” side bright pink because it’s “only a fence” and she mustn’t be petty.

I've explained above why painting a fence isn't always a good idea. Just creating more work longterm. Staining/treating yes, although won't always be necessary but also more likely to bleed through.

Sounds more like you don't really know what you're talking about tbh. Plus I value my neighbours and wouldn't want to saddle them with a patchy looking fence. HTH.

Spectre8 · 08/08/2024 13:16

If your fence is pressure treated you sont need to paint it, you only do it for colour.

My previous fence had been there for 30yrs, I only painted my side for colour and it was fine. The only reason I chnahed it is cos neighbours ivy started to pick it's way through the slats and breaking it up.

End of the day you paid for the fence it's yours no matter I'd you an see one side or nor. They need permission to paint or attach anything.

How annoying cos obviously you have a pale colour and now got a dark colour splashed over it which is more work to get rid of.

Lampshadeblue · 08/08/2024 13:42

Honestly, I couldn’t bring myself to get wound up about this. But I assume that all those saying the neighbors shouldn’t paint the fence as it doesn’t belong to them instead paint both theirs and neighbors side and repeat every couple of years to protect the fence? I’ve never seen this is in the properties I’ve lived in.

Fences aren’t protected by paint, they’re protected by being pretreated. No need to paint either side.

No, my fence is pressure treated no need to paint neighbours side. I painted my side because I wanted a specific colour to have a certain look in my garden. If it's natural colour wokre with my design then I wouldn't have painted it.

Protect them from what? Looking naked?

'@Lilliesandjasmine

I’m an avid gardener, I’d still not take issue with a neighbour painting their side of the fence, in fact I’d encourage it.'

Exactly.

It makes an area look better when people take care of their garden and regularly paint their fences.

It helps protect the wood and makes everything look nice and tidy.

I think some people just wake up every morning looking for reasons to get offended...

It’s nothing to do with being offended. If you’ve spent money purchasing a nice fence so your garden looks nice why does someone else have the right to splash paint so it doesn’t look nice?

savoycabbage · 08/08/2024 15:21

Not if you just want your fence natural and then it has paint on it from the other side.

Some people don't like coloured fences. Same as some people like wooden furniture and others like it painted.

I think part of the problem is that fences are so expensive so when you pay for one you want it to look like whatever you want it to look like.

It ruins it when the person who paid for the fence wanted to keep it lovely natural wood but next door do a poor paint job without permission on their side and it seeps through, leaving messy paint drips and streaks all over the owners natural wood side.

Yes, if you want to paint your fence.

There are people who like the look of their fences painted and there are people who don't. Nobody wants their fence to have paint seeping through from the other side.

Bringbackspring · 08/08/2024 16:44

I never in a million years thought I care about fences, but having had to spend £4k (and that was cheap because we installed in ourselves, not through a landscaper) on a brand new fence as our new house had nothing separating our house from the neighbours property, I too would also be annoyed if the neighbour painted it without checking in with us first. And I would be asking them to make it right.

I imagine the people who claim this is petty or wouldn't give a toss themselves have not had to shell out such sums of money on a fence (and chosen really nice panels instead of the cheap basic ones). A fence may sound trivial, but it is part of your property and covers quite a large area. You wouldn't be happy if your neighbours got paint all over anything else you own, but we're all supposed to say "Oh well" when it's a mega expensive, bloody massive part of your property?!

Whatacarrion · 08/08/2024 17:15

Exactly @Bringbackspring.

Our neighbour had a domestic and her ex boyfriend used our fence panel to throw at her windscreen even though there was a row of perfectly good bricks right next to the fence and it cost £150 to replace just the panel. No posts or labour.

Underlig · 08/08/2024 17:27

Fences are expensive. They have absolutely no right to paint your property. The can put up their own fence and paint that.

susiedaisy1912 · 08/08/2024 17:46

They needed your permission before they painted the side of your fence that faced their house It's your property not theirs.

Hucklemuckle · 10/08/2024 03:00

@Startingagainandagain @Lilliesandjasmine

Oh stop it. You are imagining some pristine paint job. That's not what the OP has. They have pain of a different colour to what they want seeping through.

No amount of you saying it's ok would have be believe you would be cool with this

Third pic shows not everyone has nice neutral tastes either

Definitely power wash , as presume it’s rough sawn timber , sanding wouldn’t work
but would after doing let it dry throughly
then give the whole lot a coat of clear wood

Why is that petty? If their fence is entirely on their property, she gad no right to touch it let alone paint it.

She could erect her own if she didn’t like the looks of theirs.

GroupDiscountOnTheBusToHell · 26/04/2025 08:56

No she had no right to paint it, but the fence owner doesn’t have to look at that side and wasn’t complaining that any had gone through to her side or affected her in any way.
to actually go round and paint it, so the poor people had to look at the colour of prison walls when ever they were in their garden, because of principle is next level imo.
