The little things you like about your house

I'm currently really struggling to not hate our house. A lot of it is PND and spending too much time looking at nice houses online. It gets me down almost every moment of the day. So I thought I'll start a thread for people who want to try to appreciate the little things that are good about their home. Really think everyday stuff you take for granted but would actually miss loads of you didn't have it.

I can only think of one thing and it's what inspired me to make this thread but I'm hoping as others add things, I'll recognise more things in my house that I should appreciate more.

Excellent water pressure!

@DancingFerret I peeked through the letter box, saw it and decided to rent the house. I later bought it.

Things I love about our house:

The big kitchen diner, so nice when we have people round for dinner

In the countryside with lovely walks for the dog

Having a big lootility to do the washing in

Detached so no noise, and a drive that fits 3 cars

The fact we have more bathrooms than people!

My neighbours, we get on really well and have lots of socials

Cosy living room and a separate study for WFH days

It gets the sun all day.

French doors from the sitting room onto our walled patio garden. On warm summer evenings (fingers crossed!) it's a real pleasure to open them and enjoy a glass of something interesting while listening to the water feature tinkling away.

The oak clad staircase made to measure by a local carpenter last year. We decided it would be cheaper than constantly re-carpeting the stairs thanks to the excellent cats using the carpeted steps as their scratching post.🙄

We moved from a new build with all it's associated warranties to a 1930s semi that had multiple bodges!

I love that I can hear the train at night sometimes
I love the lay out - defined rooms that can be closed off but also opened up and flow through downstairs
I love my living room - it's small but so cozy
And I love my garden which is 80ft compared to the postage stamp of grass we used to have!

I’m in a bit of a similar mindset at the moment….Ive been reading too many threads on here where everyone piles on and points out what is crap and awful about other people’s houses on their RightMove listings. We’re due to list ours later this year and now all I can see things which MNetters are going to be looking at with horror and crying ‘overpriced!’.

having said that I loved the house and area when we moved here (it’s a classic Victorian terrace and it’s a style I have always loved) and we’ve done lots of work, much of which I love. I guess some of what I see is all the bits that we still haven’t quite done or finished or the builder didn’t do quite right. Or things that are broken/ cluttered etc etc.

but I LOVE the view over the rooftops from our loft conversion and the fact you have a view from our shower. I love the green that we choose for our kitchen units. I love the yellow colour we painted the front door and the stained glass we got made for it. I love the original banisters and internal doors. I love all my houseplants.

I love the bay window in our bedroom. And I love the memories of our 5 years here.

You have a house.
count your blessings

You are absolutely right. I am working a lot on gratitude. A lot of my "house negativity" comes from growing up far wealthier than I am now (my father drank and gambled it all away) and worrying that I'm letting my children down, which is irrational and silly given our already privileged position to even have a house!

Another thing I like is that it's quiet and very safe here.

I don't like the house itself much as the layout is problematic and it's very poorly insulated so is freezing, but:

I have my very own study
Daughter loves her big bedroom
Driveway!! Last house didn't have one and we dreaded going out in the evenings
Neighbours are lovely
Very safe, friendly small estate with no through traffic to let my daughter play outside
Location is so handy for school/town/my mum
No mortgage is a lovely feeling

I preferred my other house but had to move to a different area 🥺
However …this house is energy efficient, has a nice view from the front , a massive garage , garden is south facing so get my laundry dry outside easily ( south facing also a negative for me as there is no shade 😩 )
we have high ceilings and large rooms

Loads of storage

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 10/05/2024 09:44

My flat is Victorian, needs updating and has some inconveniences, but I love it

The view from the sitting room over gardens
The fact that it's not overlooked
The sun in the morning in the sitting room and that the bedroom and the bathroom get the evening light
Despite being near a railway line and an airport, it's still quiet
I'm 30 minutes from the centre of London
I'm surrounded by lovely green spaces
Coming home feels like getting warm hug. I bought this when exh and I split up and have been here years. I'd love more space and I'd like a little bit of garden, but can't imagine ever finding a place I'd love as much as I do this one.

Rutlandwater · 10/05/2024 09:56

I like its location - quiet but walking distance to the city centre. Pub on the next block is a favourite, restaurants and coffee shops close by. Vibrant and socially liberal.
The house itself is spacious for a terrace - the kitchen has been extended and there's enough room for a table. The morning light in the living room is lovely. It has a decent sized west facing garden which it turns out is perfect for us. When I moved in everything was falling apart - I kept focusing on the location - everything else could be fixed.
