The little things you like about your house

I'm currently really struggling to not hate our house. A lot of it is PND and spending too much time looking at nice houses online. It gets me down almost every moment of the day. So I thought I'll start a thread for people who want to try to appreciate the little things that are good about their home. Really think everyday stuff you take for granted but would actually miss loads of you didn't have it.

I can only think of one thing and it's what inspired me to make this thread but I'm hoping as others add things, I'll recognise more things in my house that I should appreciate more.

Excellent water pressure!

@DolceGustoooohCoffee blimey, I'd love just one secret room! 5 is really an embarrassment of riches!

TaggySits · 29/04/2024 20:18

This is a nice thread because there's loads I dislike about my house, but this has made me focus on some of the positives...

  • driveway that's big enough for two cars beside each other so we don't have to let each other out.
  • dual aspect in sitting room so it's usually bright.
  • close to town but on a quiet cul-de-sac, very little traffic goes past.
  • beautiful cherry tree in the garden which is in full blossom at the minute.

Ok, I'm struggling to get much more as I really dislike the layout, the garden is small and very wet, generally the house needs quite a bit of work and it's too small for our family, but at least I thought of a couple of positives! 🤷

Banisters the kids can slide down (and do.) Seeing them reminds me of my childhood and taking pleasure in the simple, everyday things.

fungipie · 29/04/2024 20:20

all of it- it is very old and has really fabulous warm vibes

CountingCrones · 29/04/2024 20:24

Being able to see the sky from bed in the loft conversion. Hearing the birds in the mature trees in the garden. Evening sunlight hitting the leaves of the red acer in a pot by the back door and making them glow.

OttersAreMySpiritAnimal · 29/04/2024 20:25

Great view, lovely garden, but mostly that it's a project my DH and I will complete together which will provide lots of lovely memories for me when he is gone (incurable cancer).
What a lovely thread, thank you OP.

JanglingJack · 29/04/2024 20:28

The sun rises at the front and sets at the back.

We live in an area where hedges separate gardens - Hawthorn. The bird population is so beautiful and diverse.

There's a little outdoor cupboard at the front. I assume it was for coal. Now I can bung DDs stuff in there for her Dad to pick up without having to utter a word to him.

Huge cupboard in bathroom with boiler in. Big enough to stand a clothes horse in.

It's the tiniest rabbit hutch terraced house ever. But it's home.

Our beautiful garden which we used a small inheritance to design and plant. Absolutely worth it!

5 hidden rooms and a hidden passageway connecting two rooms which is only accessible by going into the cupboard which is hidden behind a mirror in the master bedroom, you have to crawl through a portion of the passageway because it goes through the roof but it's still pretty awesome.

Oh and similar to you, excellent water pressure, so much so that we had to turn it down quite a lot. Although that comes with the downside of having to purge the pipes of sediment every couple of months to stop it building up

@DolceGustoooohCoffee what! This sounds like a kid’s dream. Do you know anything about the history of why it was built?

Neveralonewithaclone · 30/04/2024 08:12

Oh I have a massive cupboard with the hot water tank in!!! I love it and can hang a whole load of washing in there which dries overnight. I'm about to move to a house with a combi boiler and i shall miss the cupboard.

Freakinfraser · 30/04/2024 08:28

It’s chocolate box pretty.

can I suggest gently to stop looking at other peoples houses on line and comparing?

MuchTooTired · 30/04/2024 08:35

I’ve spent months hating my house. Recently, it’s been growing on me, and things that I love about it are my hallway since we painted it (the colour reminds me of a mermaid!), the view out the back, my neighbours are amazing, and it’s our own little home. That’s the biggest one, it might be cosy small but it’s ours and it keeps us sheltered and safe.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 30/04/2024 08:45

We live in a classic Victorian terrace (which I love, sorry OP!). Rather than knocking through between the living room and back dining room, the previous owners had knocked out the wall between the dining room and the hall* so the dining room feels much bigger and is "seen" and used every day. It's my favourite room in the house.

*Probably a building regs nightmare 😬

Ooh we're about to move from a house with a combi to a house with immersion. I grew up with an airing cupboard and I'm looking forward to getting one again for the last minute uniform washes and warm towels!

Little worried about having to wait for the water to heat up though, I remember that being a pain when I was an unorganised teenager!

Nannyfannybanny · 30/04/2024 09:01

JanglingJack, I thought I was the only person who said "clothes Horse". I'm in my 70s, and the last time I said it was about 25 years ago,I had a proper wooden one I loved and the puppy at the time chewed it, along with a cross stitch linen/lace table cloth, drying on it. It took me 5 years to complete....it was a labour of love,a Japanese design and given to me by my lovely DGM who died in 1972. My metal one is an airer! Envy all those who say neighbours.

Janey3090 · 30/04/2024 11:35

The sunny back garden and pond (with plenty of fish in it!)

LifeGivesULemonsMakeLimoncello · 30/04/2024 11:54

I’m in a flat and have a love hate relationship with it
What I love:
The BEST views
Insulation - it stays really warm so I don’t need the heating especially when it’s sunny. That does mean in summer it can get too hot even if it’s only high teens/low 20’s outside but....the flat has ac!
Excellent soundproofing. All the flats are occupied on my floor and above me, we all have wood floors but I don’t hear them!
24 hour reception- I never have to worry about waiting in for packages, trades people etc
Secure and safe
Gym in the building
Plug points everywhere!!

DaisyDaisyDaisyDaisyDaisyDaisy · 30/04/2024 11:57

Beautiful original stained glass above the front door

Moversnotshakers · 30/04/2024 12:21

Victorian end terrace which looks small from the front but the house was built following the road angles so the back of the house is much wider with a gorgeous enclosed courtyard garden. Also it was a 4 bed converted to a 2 bed with en suite and a large open plan landing and good sized main bathroom which auits me & DH. Drafty in the winter tho and fuel bills are high but we love it..

SugarSanity · 30/04/2024 18:17

Know the feeling OP! I get terribly depressed with Instagram house accounts! Our house feels like a never ending project as was built in 1960 and never been decorated since 😂

we’re about halfway through the rooms in regards to decorating/renovating and added extra loft space for a home office and we have a large extension ahead of it to finance 😂 - Even though it’s a constant project, here’s what I love.

  • it’s the only bungalow in the street with an upstairs and has a cracking view over the city
  • its a corner plot so has sun on it all day and year around
  • it has so many windows so constantly bathed in light
  • it’s detached and surrounded by lovely trees so very private
  • conveniently close to transport
  • it has potential! It’s a big house so it’s a blank canvas
  • we bought it during first lockdown so it was an absolute steal

it’s so easy to get bogged down with these insanely beautiful social media houses, but when I feel overwhelmed or disparaged, I try to remember how desperate I was to move into this house (our last place was a TINY 2 up 2 down pokehole new build with horrible neighbours that blasted trance til 2am)

remember a time where you wanted to be where you are now ❤️

AnnieSnap · 30/04/2024 18:41

A large garden that, when the trees are in full leaf, is fabulous private, so it’s like our little oasis (unless the power tool mad neighbour starts-up). A lovely garden room, so when it’s too hot outside, or it’s warm and raining, is perfect to sit in with the doors wide open. I had a bedroom converted into a bathroom shortly after moving in 12-years-ago. As a consequence, I don’t have to share a bathroom with a man 💪 It’s in a quiet, peaceful area where nothing much happens (apart from aforementioned power tool bastard). Also, aside from APTB, we have lovely neighbours.

BlancheSaysYes · 30/04/2024 18:47

Lovely friendly neighbours, beautiful views over the Irish sea, sunrise from the front windows and sunset from the back windows. It's also very very quiet here. I love it.

ilovegranny · 30/04/2024 18:48

My neighbours, my south-facing garden, the original wooden doors, the larger than average rooms for a semi, the proximity to a great city, and a weird curved wall that I can’t work out. Makes up for the roof that depleted my savings, the fact that our street is a rat-run for drivers who can’t be arsed going 100m further to the traffic lights, and the consequent frequent loss of a wing mirror.

MMUmum · 30/04/2024 18:58

We have neighbours on 3 sides but we've all planted hedges and trees for privacy, this means we are not overlooked so no need for curtains or blinds downstairs, light, bright and airy
