The little things you like about your house

I'm currently really struggling to not hate our house. A lot of it is PND and spending too much time looking at nice houses online. It gets me down almost every moment of the day. So I thought I'll start a thread for people who want to try to appreciate the little things that are good about their home. Really think everyday stuff you take for granted but would actually miss loads of you didn't have it.

I can only think of one thing and it's what inspired me to make this thread but I'm hoping as others add things, I'll recognise more things in my house that I should appreciate more.

Excellent water pressure!

A quiet, easy to maintain back garden, not overlooked except by trees.

Inside..... good insulation. Decor needs work lol.

Toddlerteaplease · 29/04/2024 11:46

The stairs have a turn in them. Don't know why I like this, but I really do.

BarrelOfOtters · 29/04/2024 11:46

Having lived in a house where it took 30 minutes to fill the bath. Thoroughly enjoying our current new house and high water pressure and a few minutes to fill !

I like the fact we can park easily. Used to have on road shared parking and it was a scrum.

Sorry to hear you aren't keen on your house.

Itsneverme · 29/04/2024 11:49

I'm the same as you since we moved into ours! It's still being done up and everything's taking a lot longer than it should, I've picked colour schemes and wallpaper I've now gone off and having to start again 🤨 I just keep telling myself things will get better, and if I don't like something after the rooms renovated then I can always change it again.

The one thing I do love is our garden!!!! Acres of it and wild flowers but I made a little low maintenance garden as you come out of our patio doors trees and that top and a big farm style gate that takes me (as I call it) into our secret garden

Oh and forgot to add no neighbours for miles 😍

Userxyd · 29/04/2024 11:55

Our neighbours!! Mix of ages/single people/families with young/adult children. Very friendly, nice to everyone's kids, help if anyone's locked out etc. We've all got quite small front gardens and it's not a wide or busy road so we can all wave from the front doorstep.
Whenever we think of moving I think I would actually miss them - much as I'd love a big front garden and more space I wonder if I'd miss this safe welcoming atmosphere.

Ariela · 29/04/2024 11:56

The neighbours all lovely

Barbarachicken · 29/04/2024 11:59

I've had to stop looking at other houses online as it is so depressing! Things I like about ours, a driveway on what is a very busy street. That's about it at the moment! Trying really hard to make the little adjustments needed to improve it, sorry to hear you are suffering, and hope you feel better soon.

My new place gets me down, there are things that need fixing that we weren’t aware of despite a full structural survey. However, the layout is great and cheap(er than my last place) to heat despite being Victorian with single glaze sash windows.
We are also by the sea which cheers me up daily!

My black bathroom and the knowledge that I never have to consult anyone regarding decor. Grin

Bananadramallamas · 29/04/2024 12:07

Well insulated, and not draughty. We moved from a victorian money pit.
Also, plenty of storage and in a quiet area. Consider myself lucky every day.

WelIdontknow · 29/04/2024 12:09

Sorry that you feel this way about your home. I felt this way when we moved into our current house. Since, then we changed many things. I am thankful for good neighbours and the location of house being close to amenities and big garden where children can play.

cranetea · 29/04/2024 12:11

Neighbours is a good point, yes! We live on a street full of very nice people.

Also just realised another reason why we bought it. We couldn't afford a detached and this semi is attached by the hallway so all living spaces are on the outside, which means we never really hear the (very lovely!) neighbours.

SuperBored · 29/04/2024 12:13

It's detached!

LightSpeeds · 29/04/2024 12:13

A large, unwieldy back garden that needs a lot of work BUT it really is lovely and full of promise (if you don't look at the bad bits).

I feel my house is pretty awful and it makes me feel bad too but I decorated my bedroom into something beautiful so at least I feel good in there.

HeddaGarbled · 29/04/2024 12:16

When the sun shines into the living room it warms up enough not to need heating even in winter.

TheseWomen · 29/04/2024 12:17

We have a very elegant Victorian stairs with rather lovely original bannisters, high ceilings, and original shutters in several rooms -- these reconcile me to the draughts, leaks, half-finished renovations, jungly garden and general eccentricities.

Flubadubba · 29/04/2024 12:20

The light is amazing all year round.

Abracadabra12345 · 29/04/2024 12:25

Our loft conversion. It was our DD's bedroom but since she moved out, it's a fabulous second TV / reading room. I especially love it when I sit in silence listening to heavy rain drumming on the roof, it feels like I'm cocooned in my own little world

Only drawback is that it gets hot in the warmer months

user1471538283 · 29/04/2024 12:29

I too have so much to do with my home. But I still love it!

I especially love the gas central heating (we had an eco electric heating system previously and it was miserable), the quiet, that the lounge is south facing so it gets really hot and that it's detached.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 29/04/2024 12:34

The people next door have a dog that looks like a dire wolf so I can pretend I’m in Game Of Thrones.

GoogleWhacking · 29/04/2024 12:45

I like that my house feels safe. It's a large house and not in the best area, but I feel safe on my own when no one is here with me. For some reason it has good vibes.

I love my kitchen that has doors to the garden and windows on two aspects.

I also like that it is tidy and smells nice.

I think the most annoying thing about living with a partner is having to compromise on the decor.

LaWench · 29/04/2024 12:51

Being on a quiet estate of older houses, a lot of the neighbours have been here for decades and are welcoming to new families.
We're not overlooked at all and have lots of parking. It's walking distance to the centre of the village with shops, pubs and restaurants and has great schools within walking distance including the best secondary school in the area.

The house itself is a bigger project that we first expected, hoped for a lick of paint to make it ours, it's currently a major renovation where everything will need to be replaced except for the outside walls. We've done the living areas and DC bedrooms, everything else is left to renovate.

Oblomov24 · 29/04/2024 12:56

We have had ours as easy / minimal maintenance for many years. Quick to clean, quick trim of garden bushes, easy.

I like that ours has loads of cupboards eg for shoes and coats, another for filing cabinet hoover eufy and iron.
