The little things you like about your house

I'm currently really struggling to not hate our house. A lot of it is PND and spending too much time looking at nice houses online. It gets me down almost every moment of the day. So I thought I'll start a thread for people who want to try to appreciate the little things that are good about their home. Really think everyday stuff you take for granted but would actually miss loads of you didn't have it.

I can only think of one thing and it's what inspired me to make this thread but I'm hoping as others add things, I'll recognise more things in my house that I should appreciate more.

Excellent water pressure!

It's quirky - a one-off. Looks tiny/poky from the outside, but everyone who visits goes "ooh, didn't expect this, like a Tardis".

Neighbours is a good point, yes! We live on a street full of very nice people.

Also just realised another reason why we bought it. We couldn't afford a detached and this semi is attached by the hallway so all living spaces are on the outside, which means we never really hear the (very lovely!) neighbours.

What is getting you down about your house, it has a really good beginning?

Good neighbours is one of the most, if not the most important things about a house. You could live in a palace and if your neighbours were horrible it would be very difficult to enjoy the 'palace'.

I love our open fire. The main thing is something that can't be changed, that is where it is. But most other things could be changed if I really disliked them. We've recently had a walk-in shower to replace the bath and had the garden redone - love it! But we've flooring down in the dining room that has been 'horrible' for nearly 20 years, it's not the end of the world though. :)

Hi op, I felt like this when I had dd1. I'd never spent so much time at home before and I found I'd just sit there and find all the tiny things I hated about the house, skirting boards not straight etc etc I'd never had the time to do this before. Its just as your sat at home so much. It will pass don't worry 😊

Our neighbours!! Mix of ages/single people/families with young/adult children. Very friendly, nice to everyone's kids, help if anyone's locked out etc. We've all got quite small front gardens and it's not a wide or busy road so we can all wave from the front doorstep.
Whenever we think of moving I think I would actually miss them - much as I'd love a big front garden and more space I wonder if I'd miss this safe welcoming atmosphere.

I have lots of big windows which let in lots of light and sunshine. Nothing better than sunshine on your face.

My black bathroom and the knowledge that I never have to consult anyone regarding decor. Grin

Ooh, we had a black and pink bathroom when I was a child
(i really loved the pink!) My DDad decorated and was very proud of it, I think it was “in” as a trend in the 60s / 70s. Bit sad when it got painted over.

Twiglets1 · 29/04/2024 13:45

It has a south facing garden and is low maintenance so I don't have to do much gardening but have somewhere sunny to sit when the weather's nice

Nellieinthebarn · 29/04/2024 13:57

Its got a little log burner, which I know is the crime of the century on here, but it makes winter bearable for me. I got a bird table for my birthday and watching Bobbin the Robin and Hugger and Mugger the jackdaws stuffing their faces with very expensive bird seed gives me joy everyday. The neighbours are lovely.

Imicola · 29/04/2024 14:00

I was also going to say excellent water pressure - it makes showers a joy!

I really like my kitchen - I spent ages working out how to do it, and I'm so glad I did, as I think it works well.

Also my beautiful bookshelves and matching desk that DH made for our front room.

I like hearing an owl in the evening.

And, despite being in a busy city, close to main roads and railway lines, the street is fairly quiet.

cranetea · 29/04/2024 14:55

@sbplanet Oh, what isn't getting me down? I think it's what @sarahc336 said. I sit feeding DD and I see the chipped paint on the skirting, the plaster cracks, the scratches on the floor... It's an old house. What I once loved as characterful, now fuels my depression. I'm sure it'll pass. And by the time both DDs are in school, we probably have the money, time, and mental headspace to actually renovate.

@Nellieinthebarn We have a goldfinch that visits our garden. It is a delight to listen to.

My little half size cellar

NosnowontheScottishhills · 29/04/2024 15:10

I have views to die for I can see the sea from my bedroom and hills from both my bathroom and living room, an estate agent described the view from my living as a real “wow factor”. I also regularly see swallow and swifts bats in the summer kites and buzzards all year round and wintering geese. I’m also not overlooked.

BarrelOfOtters · 29/04/2024 15:31

I love the fact that I now have a garden (small) that birds visit. And yes goldfinch in the front garden.

:) If you don't have the time, money and inclination stop looking at the paintwork and plaster cracks, what do they matter?
Get a greenhouse? Growing stuff is really easy and infinitely rewarding, plus the veggies look fab and taste great. But there's always bugs to battle! ;)

Hugmorecats · 29/04/2024 15:55

My house is tiny but here's some of the things I like or love:

  • Quiet neighbours, never hear them
  • A magnolia tree, cherry tree and lots of flowers
  • I had the outside painted and it looks very clean now
  • The shower is powerful and hot
  • I've put up wallpaper and painted in colours I like
  • It's high up so has a good view over the city
AmazingBouncingFerret · 29/04/2024 16:05

You can’t see it from the street.
I live on a cul de sac that only has 3 houses on it and mine is down a longish driveway, its tiny little entrance is through an archway of trees that most people overlook.

ClonedSquare · 29/04/2024 16:23

I like this thread, I feel quite similarly about my own house so it's good to think about what I do like.

Well insulated and quick to heat. Three very good sized bedrooms. We redid the bathrooms so I love the design of them. A downstairs loo and en-suite. Plenty of storage space. A kitchen-diner that doesn't feel too cramped. A great location, close enough to amenities but in a quiet and peaceful village.

The neighbours all lovely

Thank you.

I think you must live next door to me. 😘

SometimesIDowonder · 29/04/2024 16:28

Wooden flooring in the lounge. So much better than carpet.

Coastalcreeksider · 29/04/2024 16:35

Two separate reception rooms, use dining room during the day as overlooks the back garden and lounge at night.

Huge bedroom facing south so very warm, not massively overlooked, trees hide most of house at back. Decent neighbours.

All my friends love my house as it's quite cottagey looking and really cosy inside.

I love it! ❤️ 😄

WitchyWay · 29/04/2024 19:23

I love this thread! It really is the little things in life that bring joy.

I love our big driveway that makes parking up so easy. It's our first house with a drive and I could never go back.

I also love real wood. We have wooden thresholds between rooms and I love them!

Cloverforever · 29/04/2024 19:36

My conservatory, my integral garage (to keep all the clutter in), and my stovax wood burner. And the fact that it's all mine!

Nannyfannybanny · 29/04/2024 19:44

The conservatory. Back garden faces north but because it's a bungalow, big garden, the sun comes up over the roof come march,it's lovely and warm and light, full of plants, comfy chairs.

SallyWD · 29/04/2024 19:49

Spacious and in a quiet neighbourhood

DolceGustoooohCoffee · 29/04/2024 19:55

5 hidden rooms and a hidden passageway connecting two rooms which is only accessible by going into the cupboard which is hidden behind a mirror in the master bedroom, you have to crawl through a portion of the passageway because it goes through the roof but it's still pretty awesome.

Oh and similar to you, excellent water pressure, so much so that we had to turn it down quite a lot. Although that comes with the downside of having to purge the pipes of sediment every couple of months to stop it building up

Neveralonewithaclone · 29/04/2024 20:02

I love how quiet and private my garden is and how much fruit it produces.

Like a pp it has a warm and safe vibe.
