The little things you like about your house

I'm currently really struggling to not hate our house. A lot of it is PND and spending too much time looking at nice houses online. It gets me down almost every moment of the day. So I thought I'll start a thread for people who want to try to appreciate the little things that are good about their home. Really think everyday stuff you take for granted but would actually miss loads of you didn't have it.

I can only think of one thing and it's what inspired me to make this thread but I'm hoping as others add things, I'll recognise more things in my house that I should appreciate more.

Excellent water pressure!

An airing cupboard
my wonderful wild garden with birds and hedgehogs
garden not overlooked at all

but....well...the thing I like most about my house is that I have actually got one.

Just moved to my own house after living with DP. Love the light. Starts at the front and moves to the back. Love downstairs as it flows.

it’s clutter free and just airy.

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 30/04/2024 19:11

The garden has a hedgehog, frogs, and lots of birds.

The stairs come off the side of the hall at an angle which makes the hall seem wider and brighter.

dontcallmelen · 30/04/2024 19:11

Really hope you feel much better very soon OP it’s a good thing to do sometimes focus on what you like or love about your home rather than the negatives.
for me lovely neighbours
quite a big secluded garden for London
split level landing upstairs
quirky kitchen
original stained glass in the door & above it
it’s warm cosy & has a feel of enveloping you in a hug.

Notthatcatagain · 30/04/2024 19:35

My sort fruit beds, there is nothing better than walking down the garden first thing in the morning with a pretty bowl and picking strawberries and raspberries to go on my breakfast yoghurt

mynameisR · 30/04/2024 19:57

Mine is a dormer bungalow which is detached, after living in semi / terraced houses all my life I am not sure if the novelty will ever wear off. I also love that the south facing lounge opens straight onto a lovely mature garden, it is bright and warm all year through. Because it is mainly elderly people around here the neighbours are very quiet, no screaming kids that I read about on here!

Washingupdone · 30/04/2024 19:58

My flat is on a hill so I have lovey views, from the south facing balcony, of the small town, a few minutes walk away in the valley and the woods on the hills the other side. My balcony is full of plants. There is also an east facing balcony for when it gets too hot. I have redecorated it everything to my taste. During covid it was heaven eating every meal outside in the sun. I feel safe and secure.
OP take your time, things will get done, they are memories for you to look back on in the future, savour the moments. Start a height measuring DC’s door post to see how they grow.

Walled back garden with a white door. I like to pretend I’m in a film version of “The Secret Garden “!
Also having a drive with 3 parking spaces. I don’t miss the scramble to park on the street we had in our old house.

Sameratdifferenthat · 30/04/2024 20:04

Big pantry
Tiny cellar
Coal fires
Walled garden

We have a newbuild and constantly are told/read thay we must have been thick for buying one. That gets me down at times because it's relentless. But, having had to move over 12 times as an adult for various reasons, what I love is having our little secure space. I have grey decor and a TV on the wall and all the things MN hates. But, I love that our children have their own rooms. I love the open plan design so my son can talk to me about his day at the table while I cook and I can see the baby playing in the playpen.
I love the teeny tiny utility room.
I admit I do get caught up with comparison but I am just really really grateful. Never thought we would be able to buy a home.... now we just need to keep it!

MustBeGinOclock · 30/04/2024 20:07

Love my French doors. Just love them open and bringing the outside in so to speak. They are in my lounge.

LocutisOfBorg · 30/04/2024 20:10

I'm aware that many others I know have very much 'posher" houses than me. But I love my house. Here's why:

• The rent is very much more reasonable than almost everyone else I know who rent, especially for a 4 bed.
• We have the luxury of a second 'bathroom'.. well, shower room with toilet. Yes it's a wet room for a disabled person but it's an additional bathroom.
• It's social housing home so when something goes wrong, it gets fixed without cost to us. Whenever I feel sad that I never got on the property ladder, I remember I don't have to deal with horrendously costly boiler replacements and the like.
• It's cosy and decorated in colours I like.
• I may not have EVERYTHING I want but I definitely have everything I need.. and more.
• My bed is more comfy than beds in any hotel I've ever used.
• It's seen me through many ups and downs and life changes; it's familiar and safe.
• My grown up children can come home to it whenever they choose and know this.

Flozle · 30/04/2024 20:13

I love my front door: it's the original wide 1930's door with art nouveau glass and it's stunning. It's my favourite thing in the house.

Ketzele · 30/04/2024 20:15

My house was way cheaper than anything else in the area for many reasons - but there's a lot I love about it.

Big windows
High ceilings
No right angles
Lots of high places for the cats to climb
It was built as a pub before becoming the Queen Elizabeth laundry in the 20s and 30s, then a hairdresser, then an off licence, then it came unmodernised to me. I love that history.

goody2shooz · 30/04/2024 20:20

I love the fact that it’s warm! We’d always had period houses before this bungalow and it’s so quick to heat in comparison. Also love lying in bed and looking out of the big picture window over the garden and the trees. Last year we did a ‘no-mow May’ and just mowed paths through the grass, beautiful!

Cactusmad · 30/04/2024 20:22

I love the key in the door feel, it’s home . Cool in summer and cosy in winter. Lots to do as it’s a money pit but very loved.

Bumblebeeinatree · 30/04/2024 20:25

More than one toilet,

Luckycloverz · 30/04/2024 20:31

Secret panel in bedroom which hides old maid/nanny staircase.
This goes to downstairs hallway and also up to next floor and playroom. This is how santa delivers his gifts!

TheNoonBell · 30/04/2024 21:16

Privacy. I can only see another house from one small window, the one which we always keep the curtains closed. No one can see into the civilised bit of garden, although a paraglider once flew over when DH was in his pants watering the grass. He still looks anxiously at the sky occasionally 😂

68User · 30/04/2024 21:21

The fact we are a semi but halls joining so very little neighbour noise. Lovely bay window in south facing lounge which we replaced as original rotted but it’s lovely and light. Small but full interesting garden and actually very secluded.

ShowOfHands · 30/04/2024 21:34

I used to live in a 2 up 2 down, tiny Victorian house and whilst very happy there, we outgrew it quickly. I didn't drive and had to get a bus and then walk through a village to take reception aged DD to school, with her little brother - a newborn when she started school - strapped to the front of me.

In all weathers we used to walk past lots of houses of all sorts and I used to imagine buying one of them. Not the big beautiful ones - though I wouldn't have minded - but some solid 3-bed 1930s semis. It seemed impossible but maybe achievable if I squinted a bit and thought about going back to work and the DC getting older.

Five years later, I bought one of those very houses. It was falling down and it's taken 7 years to get the big stuff done, with a way still to go. But I've spent an age choosing wallpaper to make me smile and colourful tiles and upcycling bits of furniture. We even found the original 1930s quarry floor and an original fireplace hidden under levelling compound and behind plaster.

I just feel happy every time I approach the house on foot from the south. For the longest time, I kept walking but now I turn right and walk up the driveway. My driveway. I have to pinch myself to believe it.

It's not fancy at all. It's small and probably not a house you'd look twice at. It's ours though.

geminiflanagan · 30/04/2024 21:40

We moved in Dec from our little starter house that we'd been in for 15 years. I really miss the decent cupboard storage! It had 3 off the landing and one of them was a proper walk in one. They were fab. Here we just have a crappy narrow airing cupboard!

Timetocheersme · 30/04/2024 22:09

I used to live in a house that many would consider dream home like. We had many happy years in my old house but that changed and I'm now in 2 bed flat. I love that I'm the only adult and this home isn't paved with eggshells. I love that my ds and me can relax and just be ourselves. I don't have that dreaded feeling when I come home from work. It's an old money pit but everything I've changed has been exactly how I wanted it (in my budget obv). I can't see me ever moving again. It has a lot of faults, but it's our sanctuary.

ohthejoys21 · 30/04/2024 22:51

The space downstairs for entertaining, my gigantic porcelain floor tiles, and a special day bed carved out in the garden where I can read my paper.

WickedSerious · 30/04/2024 22:57

I like our garden,nothing else.
