I confess I know nothing about Art but I think this is hideous!

Its on sale in the same area in which I live. Former owner a renowed artist apparently. Its a good price probably cause noone will want it

Am I alone in thinking its hideous? Where would you even start in updating it?

Are those the only two choices?

This was my thought too, given a few people have said it. Weird that the auto-sneer is about grey houses!

FWIW, I think the bedroom looks really uncomfortable, and the other parts aren't really to my taste. Disclaimer: I don't live in a grey box and I have no velvet or chandeliers!

Maireas · 25/02/2024 17:00

No auto sneer about grey. It's an opinion.
I personally dislike grey and I think it's been over done in recent years. However, taste is subjective!

shrugs It was someone's home, I believe they're now dead. I'm not the first, nor the last, to describe a place as 'hideous'.

I wouldn't want to move in somewhere and spend the huge amount of time/money I'd expect this one to need.

Why look at it then?
And even worse, why share it?
It comes across as mean and insensitive (particularly if it belonged to someone who has recently died)

No, it's not my taste but I'm guessing your house wouldn't appeal to me either.
I'm guessing yours isn't as colourful or original as this?

TempleOfBloom · 25/02/2024 17:03

It isn't going to suit many people so will go at a price for a project or a do-er upper, probably, and then someone will rip out all the decorative add-ons, put in an updated kitchen and restore it to it's hotel-chic greige potential with furniture from Next and curtains from Dunelm. Result. What's the problem?

Yougetmoreofwhatyoufocuson · 25/02/2024 17:04

At least it’s not greige and coated in plastic.

wonderinglywondering · 25/02/2024 17:05

It's not to my taste but my grandfather is a hobby artist / writer, around 30 years ago someone bought him a book on trompe l'oile (sp) art and he went for it similar to this. All the radiators in their house are painted to look wooden and their stairs / landing is painted to look like yellow sandstone. It took him forever and it's still there, god knows what will happen if/when it has to be sold. I would be sad to see it go, but that's sentiment rather than logic!

TempleOfBloom · 25/02/2024 17:06

An auto-sneer about grey (I moved into a house with grey walls and am too lazy to redecorate and too poor to pay someone else) is not about grey per se but that SO many houses on RM all look the same. So many new bathrooms look the same. So many posters on this board can never see past the decor of a house or its furniture.

motheronthedancefloor · 25/02/2024 17:11

My house is an average 4 bed detached and its not grey out or in

Looking at the floor plan it's only the ground floor shown. You get a better idea watching the video

VikingLady · 25/02/2024 17:14

I absolutely love it, just for the sake of its being different! I'd totally buy that. The only room I disliked was the kitchen, because it was boring.

DistingusedSocialCommentator · 25/02/2024 17:16

We are all different, not to my taste

Ellmau · 25/02/2024 17:16

I really love the wall paintings in the bedrooms. It does look a bit tired and neglected elsewhere, and isn't very attractive outside.

I think it's actually a flat on the first floor.

Mementomorissons · 25/02/2024 17:20

I love it! I treat my own house like this. It's the most expensive thing you'll ever buy... might as well have fun

bonzaitree · 25/02/2024 17:20

Gorgeous location!

The painting… well it’s nothing some dulux emulsion won’t solve 😂

Norhymeorreason · 25/02/2024 17:23

It's a labour of love - a huge amount of time, effort and talent to create somewhere that must have brought the owner a lot of happiness.

susansaucepan · 25/02/2024 17:27

Is it the bad photography or does the whole place look a bit dirty ?

It is really not to my taste and does't look remotely homey . The bathroom actually scares me a bit .

GoosieLucie · 25/02/2024 17:29

Oh, wow! How wonderfully quirky!

Usually I deeply dislike homes that have been done up to look like something else (think of mock tudor beams, pretend fireplaces, wood panelling etc) but somehow this one is different and I'm rather captivated by it. The estate agent describes it perfectly as an "exceptionally individual interior"! It's clearly been done by a gifted artist.

I really hope that the eventual buyer is someone who appreciates its uniqueness and they won't rip it all out and paint over it with some horrible, boring and nondescript F&B grey paint called "elephant's arse" or whatever the latest fashion is!

Fifiesta · 25/02/2024 17:33

I’ve just eaten steak and field mushrooms. I am now wondering if the mushrooms were truly magical!

Nextdoor55 · 25/02/2024 18:21

It needs to be an Airbnb it's novelty some people will love it. You have to admire the work that's gone into it!!

strawberry2017 · 25/02/2024 18:22

Oh it's just awful 🫣

Dustybarn · 25/02/2024 18:44

Full marks to the estate agent who got fully into the spirit of things, referring to it as a “villa”, as it is modeled on a Roman villa, although that staircase is a bit Ancient Greece….

whatsappdoc · 25/02/2024 18:47

So many bad repeated photos, the estate agent's work is what should be called hideous

BoobyDazzler · 25/02/2024 18:50

Well, I wouldn’t keep any of it but I can appreciate the skill and effort that went in to it. I don’t think it’s but it certainly isn’t to my tastes.

I’d bet my mortgage on the fact that if the owner were to view my house though he’d find my F&B coloured, cluttered, eclectic home completely hideous, so 🤷🏽‍♀️.

You have to do what YOU like in your own home and I find poking fun at what other people like a bit sad.

LuluBlakey1 · 25/02/2024 18:51

I've seen this before and I agree- it's hideous. It looks dirty, rundown and cold - the 'art' is mixed with 1970s naffness. I'm sure it was a labour of love and it might have looked much better elsewhere but in that house it's awful. Probably expensive to get rid of too.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 25/02/2024 18:53

Not a fan. Also not sure why some posters seem to think that if you don't like this, you must want a house with grey decor Confused.
