Most boring place you’ve lived?

I’ve lived all over. London, Bristol, Manchester, Glasgow, Cardiff, Cambridge, and Singapore and Chicago.

The most boring place I lived was Cardiff. Lovely city, but lived in the bay in the redevelopment for 6 months and couldn’t wait to leave.

Heresy I know, but Skye. I’ve been there in beautiful weather and it’s magical, breathtaking scenery. Spent a week there in the rain and there’s nothing…..

Did you visit the Talisker distillery?

How is Egham boring? You're right on the Thames. Take up rowing as a sport or walk along the paths. You're next door to Windsor great park. Go rollerblading/running/walking. You're surrounded by nice pubs, bars, shops, restaurants. It's an affluent areas, so there's no end of job possibilities. There are fast trains in to London. I honestly don't know how you can describe it as boring. What are you wanting from a place?

or some people, everything you have listed is boring AF

Slough. There’s hardly anywhere nice to go out and nothing nice to see (unless you go into Windsor). It’s too close to London for anyone to bother investing in the social scene; anyone who wants to go anywhere interesting just gets on the fast train to Paddington .

Slough just reminds me of the office. As in Ricky Gervais not my work 😂

I chose some random actives. I loathe shopping and would never go rollerblading but my point is that, whatever you want to do, it's on your doorstep.

St. Albans.

@PauliesWalnuts I lived in Derby over 20 years ago if you were there at that time did you ever go to the indie club bluenote I think it was called?

I think you're letting Slough off too lightly. The same is true of Windsor, Winchester and loads of other towns close to London, but they still have a bit of life of their own too.

What was missing in Sevenoaks?

A bit of life, presumably.

It's nice, but dim.

Sabbatical times in Australia and New Zealand were an interesting getaway for us. Melbourne was our Australian base and Wellington our New Zealand one. There’s no doubting that New Zealand is scenic and a great holiday destination. I loved how friendly people were too, but it felt like the wayest wayback of beyond. Somehow too laid back for us even though we made great friends

Was going to say the same about NZ. It's really boring. No doubt there are a lot of beaches and the countryside is beautiful.

WildFlowerBees · 03/02/2024 13:51

Guernsey, the most exciting thing to happen was the Guernsey Press printing that Mr & Mrs Le Sauvage were moving and someone else had their garden gnome stolen.

I'd throw in Australia too, if you're not into beaches. You can do the non-beach highpoints of Sydney in 2 hours. Darwin? 20 minutes with time for a flat white en-route.

Australia does have some wonderful countryside - Blue Mountains, Kakadu, Margaret River etc - but they are inconveniently far from each other: you're not going to live in easy reach of more than one. And the suburbs of Australia have to be some of the ugliest and dullest on the planet - Porpoise Spit (Muriel's Wedding) is pinpoint accurate.

cheesychipsontheoche · 03/02/2024 13:57

Rugby. Should be a thriving town, what with the train line to London, grammar schools and a bit of history. Sadly, they don't make the best of any of it and it's dull as ditchwater. Couldn't wait to leave.

Skinhorse · 03/02/2024 13:58

Aberdeen - get the weather out of the way freezing with a biting wind that'll whip your make up off the second you open the door. But the real issue is the culture - obsessed with consumer shit, brand labels, it's Essex on steroids.

Then there's the violence, Friday night town is heaving with football thugs and men off the rigs looking for a good time ie getting shit faced and having a punch up. There's a lot of money around for range rovers, tat and drugs, that rubs alongside extreme poverty. But the whole city is affected by poverty of mind, designer sportswear aside, it's a cultural vacuum.

Maybe what I've described isn't classed as boring but something else. I had a fairly visceral reaction to the place. Sorry Aberdonians.

Falmouth,Cornwall
WHAT!
How long ago was this?!
The nightlife and culture is amazing for a small town, greatly aided by the presence of the art college and University. Not to mention all the standard outdoorsy, beachy stuff.

My folks owned a house there circa 17 or 18 years ago that they rented out. My impression at the time was although it has a thriving arts scene, the locals were climbing the walls with boredom, desperate to get out.

(They also owned an art gallery and friends lived there, so we had lots of interaction)

Gettingcolder · 03/02/2024 14:01

Switzerland - it's soulless and the people I worked with had no sense of humour (apparently a common trait in the Swiss). I missed the usual banter of the British office.

Fucking pmsl 🤣 how dare you? It's not boring, you can WALK ON A PATH! 🤣🤣

I've only ever lived in London, but the worst area was Edmonton Green. We had a council flat there, so little choice over where we could live. Grey and miserable. We used the opportunity of cheap rent to save up to buy elsewhere and have never regretted it.

Edmonton Green is definitely a shithole (astonishingly so). But I wouldn't call it boring or lifeless or lacking in slightly scary vitality. Yes, it might make you question every life choice you ever made, but it wouldn't sap your will to live like some of the dull, dull places listed here.

I literally took a photo of it because I couldn't believe the state of it. If it were truly boring I wouldn't have thought to do that.

How’s the underground art, music and queer scene?

I did. Also Ritzys on a Thursday night sometimes. But it was 30+ years ago, I’d hit my late teens in Manchester at the height of acid house, the Boardwalk, the Hacienda etc, and so Derby nightlife was quite a comedown. We lived in the red light district for a while and used to make the ladies of the night a cuppa if it was cold - that’s as exciting as things got.

I live not too far from Edmonton Green (ie close enough to have driven over to explore the "shopping mall" when I moved to where I am now... biggest mistake I've ever made), can confirm it is indeed a shithole. I've never even looked in the pub INSIDE the mall but I just know 100% they are racists, last bastion and all that. Only thing I liked about Edmonton was the Wilko and I didn't like Wilko enough to ever go back to Edmonton.

I haven't properly lived there but visited many, many times as OH is from there: Ormskirk. The only interesting thing about Ormskirk was the Blockbuster. I hear it's gotten better and trendier now, but it was so, so dull every time I went. Couldn't wait to leave my in-laws' through no fault of theirs 😅

There’s just no place more depressing. I cried pretty much everyday while I was there

Londoner here. Singapore was pretty boring. I lived there for a few years. It's a nice place, just... boring. There's a reason why they call it SingaBore.

Oh wow, I always thought it was a lively place as well
