The sofa in what looks like an office workstation booth.

For anyone wowed by the design but with a much larger budget it's behind this house which was obvs done by the same person and is also for sale for £1.8 million! It's been on for a while and I've looked at it a few times and wondered what the hell my nearly 50 year old body would look like squashed into an opaque a glass bath....https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/139365629#/?channel=RES_BUY

Check out this 5 bedroom detached house for sale on Rightmove

5 bedroom detached house for sale in Alma Terrace, York, North Yorkshire, YO10 for £1,850,000. Marketed by Carter Jonas, York

Gosh that second house is also a complete mess - just on a much larger scale! In my imagination, I see it having been renovated by someone who came into money and had always fancied themselves as an interior designer. Unfortunately they just took every modern trend or innovation they had ever come across and bunged it all into one house, without any thought to the overall look or liveability. They are particular fans of showcasing every conceivable modern light fitting or seating solution and yet the house still looks like it would give off gloomy basement vibes at all times and there isn't a single comfortable place to relax.

Chersfrozenface · 31/01/2024 15:05

The thing is, if you do up a place with a very specific - in fact I would say "niche" - aesthetic, you limit yourself to a very smallniche market.

The red brick building is not part of the property, not in picture or floor plan. So for me that would be an issue neighbor having bug glass window looking (possibly even opening) onto my yard.
I do think there is internal access between living and bedroom/bathroom side

It is part of the property and is shown on the floor plan. It's where the main living room is

Definitely by the same people. I'd say the first property is filled up with the unused leftovers of this place!

Overall I like the bones of the second one - the floorplan is much more "normal". It's got some quirky fixtures, that's for sure (who wants a clear toilet cistern? Mustn't have hard water in York!).

The triple shower thing is odd.

The thing that bothers me most is that the two round bathroom mirrors don't look level!

diddl · 31/01/2024 15:51

I love the look of the 2nd one from the outside & that's it!

Look very dark in places, straight into the sitting room from the front door and no garden!

Brings new meaning to "I tumble out of bed and stumble to the kitchen" 😆
What an odd little shed!

Given the apparent lack of sides to that mezzanine floor, I think you'd be more likely to stumble out of bed and tumble to the kitchen....

PoodlesRUs · 31/01/2024 18:05

That feels extraordinarily cramped!

The water in York is hard.. the cistern will look lovely after a while!

Even the listing a bit off. Don't you normally have a walk through description on a house listing?
They've listed all the designer type brands used but I can't find a proper description to understand the layout properly.
They could even have included a walk through video

MrsDoylesLastTeabag · 31/01/2024 18:43

I love it.

No it's not "family friendly". But it's awesome.

(Maybe I live in a slightly similar house. Maybe.)

Chersfrozenface · 31/01/2024 18:46

The "About" page on The Vices says the building is a former police station, so the mad 2 bedroom place behind the old police station stable block would be behind ig. That makes sense on the map - Alma Terrace anc Varey Street.

Perhaps the mad place was always intended as a holiday let.

The hospitality game in York maybe not too lucrative if both are for sale. Surprising, unless the accommodation is overpriced. Ah yes, two nights second weekend in February £656 for a double, reduced from £820.

readingmakesmehappy · 31/01/2024 18:48

How do you make that mezzanine bedroom dark enough for sleeping?

Eye mask? Industrial strength drugs?

BarbedButterfly · 31/01/2024 18:52

Clearly a home built for cats as you'd need 9 lives to survive that bloody mezzanine 😂

Alwaysgoingforit · 31/01/2024 19:05

Looks awful, all of it.

Hapagirl48 · 31/01/2024 19:18

They are both so weird. And both have bidets. Who prioritizes having a bidet and two sinks over the master bedroom internally connected to the rest of the house? Or prioritizes a bidet over a toilet in the en-suite? It’s a shame because the first one has the potential of being a very nice one bed flat. The prices are making my eyes water though. I’m very much appreciating the detective skills of some of the posters.

New2024 · 31/01/2024 19:23

Presume they are trying to make the space look like it had more head height by removing the duvet.

I really don’t like the kitchen

adonk · 31/01/2024 19:37

did they get the kitchen island from the morgue?

TuxedoCatsRule · 31/01/2024 19:46

The second house / hotel is mad too. Not sure how it functions as a hotel (probably why it no longer does) but as a house it’s utterly impractical. Utility is through the dining room. Annex is through the games room. Half the upstairs is accessed via the main hall stairs and the other half via stairs leading from a secret cupboard in the Lounge or from the outside?

Warmwoolytights · 31/01/2024 19:51

No surprise it’s on with that agent. We were going to buy with them but they turned out to have a relaxed attitude to building regs compliance.

The water in York is super hard. Only a mad person would have transparent bathroom fittings.

TheSnakeCharmer · 31/01/2024 20:34

I absolutely love the bathroom.

That converted garage is just such a wasted opportunity. Who the hell is going to go outside to get from living room to bedroom? That high level bed is just murderous. So many things wrong.
As for the bigger house...
