2 dishwashers?!

We’re re-doing our kitchen and a few people have mentioned to us recently about 2 dishwashers being game changers and we have the room - is it ridiculous or genius?!

I’ve had two for the last 12 years. Family of 6 but we also do a lot of entertaining and often sitting 10-12 at table. It has been brilliant for us. Now that we are down to 3 at home most of the time we don’t really need 2 but they still come into their own when everyone is back at Christmas and summers.

I don’t need the space for anything else - have 2 ovens and steam oven and fridge that is the size of an aircraft carrier and a big pantry so it wasn’t a difficult decision frankly.

Delphigirl · 18/11/2023 20:23

Oh and we empty them into the clean plate cupboard. I don’t really know how that would work not to empty them.
I don’t see why it is a huge luxury - putting in an integrated dishwasher didn’t cost much more than installing a cupboard and fittings. And running it is no more expensive than running one dishwasher twice as often. We can just run them both together if we need to.

Ambleen · 18/11/2023 20:23

I have 2 and love it. I have the space not to be sacrificing anything more important. Only 2 adults living here now but still really useful. On a day to day basis the clean one acts like a cupboard, you take your mug, plate whatever from it and place in the dirty one when used. By the time you need to run the dirty one the clean dishwasher is practically empty so very litte dishwasher unloading needed. No dirty crockery and pans ever clutter up the sides, they go straight in the dirty dishwasher.
Entertaining is obviously when 2 are even more useful.

I hardly own anything that cannot be dishwashed. I never run one if it is not rammed full, I don't need to run it just because I will need it clear for a big meal.
I have lived in a house with a 2 drawer system but while I loved the concept it was more breakdown prone (F&P brand)

Lazy person here.

We redid our kitchen a while back (I say redid but there was very little there and I waited until nothing was functional) and it was sensible to put an integrated dishwasher in there. We already had one in the garage but it's a faff. However, it's turned out really practical, so we've just replaced the worn out garage one, so still have the two.

Two people, no visitors, all good. We use the garage one most but can't run the washing machine and it at the same time, so then we use the kitchen one. If we do have visitors, it's so helpful. I cook a lot tho, everything from scratch.

I saw it suggested on here several years ago, so knew it works well for some people.

Edited

You take all your dirty plates into the garage to put in the dishwasher?

bananafishbones1 · 18/11/2023 20:46

I think it's genius, I've said for years this is my goal but no room sadly!

FiveShelties · 18/11/2023 20:55

We have the two dish drawers which I love. I am amazed at just how much you can fit it, obviously my husband can get more in as he loads it 'correctly', apparently!😁

Citygirlrurallife · 18/11/2023 21:11

It probably speaks volumes that nobody has posted “I have 2 and I deeply regret it”

I have got one dishwasher, but I could definitely make use of two, most days. My dishwasher is on at the moment and there is stuff around the kitchen waiting until that load finishes. It would also be great for when the dishwasher breaks and you're waiting for it to be fixed - just use the other one! Or when there's more cooking than usual going on.

I'd be pretty tempted in your position tbh

Spottywombat · 18/11/2023 21:22

It is genius. One of those things that makes no sense but works well.

@IMustDoMoreExercise bit hard to explain but garage is next to kitchen & when we moved in, all the plumbing was in there.

DanceMumTaxi · 18/11/2023 21:22

I’ve never heard of anyone having two dishwashers, we seem to manage fine with one. I do know someone who has two washing machines though. I’d definitely go for that if we had space.

RandomMess · 18/11/2023 21:27

See I don't get 2 washing machines but I guess that's because we do one load per day (occasionally 2) 🤷🏽‍♀️

Applesaarenttheonlyfruit · 18/11/2023 21:27

We have 2. Sometimes they are both full, sometimes both empty. 1 is usually emptied by my DH every morning and we’ve usually started on the other. It means you rarely have dishes on the side.

If you cook, it’s a game changer. We do have a very big kitchen though, so it’s not ‘instead’ of a cupboard.

That’s true!

PlipPlopChoo · 18/11/2023 21:29

how many people do you wash up for each day?

OP has a family of 4. Needing 2 dishwashers is really lazy.

If loading one dishwasher and the odd bit of handwashing is too much effort perhaps they should switch to disposable plates and cutlery.

zurala · 18/11/2023 21:31

I frequently wish we had space for a second one. Ours is on 2-3 times a day (family of four all based at home all the time) and there's always dishes on the side waiting to go in. I would have two in a heartbeat.

ScandiNoirNuit · 18/11/2023 21:34

We have stayed in rental houses with 2 dishwashers and it was brilliant with at least 2 families there at mealtimes. If you have the space, why not?

yodaforpresident · 18/11/2023 21:38

No regrets about having two dishwashers here (for three of us). They are emptied when finished and only take 2.5 hours to run a cycle - they project an image on the floor to show how much time is left to run. Never any mess around as everything goes in there , which is great when cooking. We have a very large kitchen though so nothing sacrificed at all in terms of cupboards
and other appliances.

BlueBlueCowWondering · 18/11/2023 21:43

We've had 2, since redoing the kitchen almost 10 years ago. Not a single regret. Dishwasher space vs extra cupboard? No contest.

its interesting how many pp 'can't imagine' why the set up works, but also how many pp with actual experience of 2 dishwashers love how it works...

Pinkpinkpink15 · 18/11/2023 21:47

whensmynexthol1day · 18/11/2023 19:44

We've just done a new kitchen and put in two. I love it already! Nothing on the side waiting to go in which when modern dishwashers have a cycle of nearly 6 hours it seems pretty difficult to avoid the with just one.
Appreciate its a huge luxury though- but if you have space it's worth doing

@whensmynexthol1day

dear god, tell me that's a typo! 6 hours? SIX??

well if that's the case you just made my decision for me. No dishwasher but get the bin cupboard!

whensmynexthol1day · 18/11/2023 21:50

Yep @Pinkpinkpink15 5hours 45 for the eco wash. Can do a normal wash at 2 hours 45 but obviously not as energy friendly. Bonkers isn't it!

Ladyj84 · 18/11/2023 21:56

We have a big family and 1 big dishwasher does us fine but I would have two washing machines if I had room lol

muckymayhem · 18/11/2023 21:57

Having two doesn't mean you will constantly use two, but it does mean on high traffic days catering wise you can get it all done more quickly and without used dishes sitting on the side until a load has finished. If you can afford to buy two then I'd definitely do it. I don't see a downside beyond the initial expense of an "extra" appliance.

Yikes at the latest comments about modern dishwashers taking 6 hrs, even more reason to get two! <rapidly adjusts own fledgling kitchen plans to fit another dishwasher in>

Tubbyinthehottub · 18/11/2023 22:08

I have two. We only run the dishwasher at night for the cheap rate electricity so there are times when it's full but waiting to be run and the other one is being filled. I've got a big kitchen.

Teddleshon · 18/11/2023 22:11

Have 2 and wouldn’t be without them.

DogInATent · 18/11/2023 22:14

Based on other MN threads, I presume it's one for the dishes and the other for the "toys".
