2 dishwashers?!

We’re re-doing our kitchen and a few people have mentioned to us recently about 2 dishwashers being game changers and we have the room - is it ridiculous or genius?!

how many people do you wash up for each day?

OP has a family of 4. Needing 2 dishwashers is really lazy.

If loading one dishwasher and the odd bit of handwashing is too much effort perhaps they should switch to disposable plates and cutlery.

Edited

Maybe you don’t cook much? I do - a lot, including baking. also I don’t really care if you think it’s lazy….

It probably speaks volumes that nobody has posted “I have 2 and I deeply regret it”

Or potentially it indicates that the overwhelming majority of people would never consider having two dishwashers in the first place.

I mean, we have been a family of 5 (before friends joining us at various mealtimes over the years) and I grew up as one of a family of 6 (before guests) and I've never felt a hankering for a 2nd dishwasher.
With the possible exception of Christmas day when it has been our turn to host morning drinks, nibbles and snacks for 18 or so before starting on the things from the main meal, I can't imagine ever needing a 2nd dishwasher unless you are catering for 10 or more on a daily basis.

Fisher & Paykel dishdrawer. Two dishwashers in the space of one. Ours is ten years old and going fine except for the kick plate (you have to look where your feet are when opening the bottom drawer).

Sure but my point is either you don’t have 2 so you can’t really say if it’s a good idea or not, or you do have 2 and seemingly 100% who do say yes go for it….

we def have the room for it and the thought of paying for a lovely new kitchen and never or very rarely having piles of dishes on the side (which is always the case cos you can guarantee when it goes one someone makes a snack and suddenly there’s a plate and knife and then more stuff piling up before the other load is done) spoiling it all

I’m probably convinced to be honest….

If you have a large kitchen and can afford the space and have use for the second why not? It would make entertaining a breeze.

nettie434 · 19/11/2023 00:07

Genius if you have the space! There is nothing worse than leaving stuff on the side while the machine is running or handwashing items for which there is no room in the dishwasher so the worktops are clear.

I only have space for one slimline dishwasher so this is pure fantasy!

OhNaffOffYouWazzock · 18/11/2023 18:23

I suppose if you regularly have a kitchen full of dishes while the dishwasher is running then it would be useful.
Ours gets emptied in the morning, filled throughout the day and on in the evening. In the rare occasions there's a few bits and bobs that don't fit in they get washed by hand.

I think the idea is you don't need to empty it. You just fill one as you go throughout the day. And use the clean stuff in the other one like it's a cupboard.

Littlebitofacold · 19/11/2023 00:44

I love this idea! Dishes are a big problem in our house (although we don’t currently have a dishwasher at all so that’s why) but I think having lived 7 years now without a dishwasher maybe when it’s time to do my kitchen I might try and squeeze in two.

I seem to be one of these people who uses every dish/utensil in the kitchen when I cook so it would probably be ideal for me.

I understand the idea is you use the clean one as a cupboard more or less then just put away any leftover clean items when it needs to become the ‘dirty dishwasher’. Our kitchen isn’t massive so may need to sacrifice crockery storage.

Unashamed owner of two dishwashers here. It’s somewhere between game changer and unnecessary luxury but I do love it.

we designed the kitchen pre covid when we entertained loads so those double dishwasher running days are not as frequent as they might have been but it’s incredible when guests are here.

I think in a household where all members were trained to load the dishwasher it would be incredible but as I’m the only one who does we do still end up with dishes building up on the side, but there is usually one on/clean and one part loaded. We probably only do 1-1.5 loads/day but if you have the room I’d definitely put it on the serious consideration list.

What is wrong with the people in your house that they can't put their dirty dishes in a dishwasher?!? (Assuming no disabilities or obviously v small children).

UtterlyButterly2048 · 19/11/2023 00:52

I have 2 F&P Tall Drawers in my kitchen, plus one normal dishwasher in the utility that was already there when we moved in. I love it, I can host 12 people, all pots pans and crockery goes straight into the dishwasher, no faff, no clearing in the morning. Give not a single fuck if that anyone thinks that makes me lazy and, space allowing, will always have 2 dishwashers.

Pinkpinkpink15 · 19/11/2023 00:53

whensmynexthol1day · 18/11/2023 21:50

Yep @Pinkpinkpink15 5hours 45 for the eco wash. Can do a normal wash at 2 hours 45 but obviously not as energy friendly. Bonkers isn't it!

@whensmynexthol1day

🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄

even 2.45 is mental!!

Do you have any idea whet the difference in water/elec is between the two options??

if I get one it'll be a slimline (it's all I can fit).

I really just want a place to put the dirty dishes as they accumulate through the day I feel it's too wasteful (water mainly) to wash up manually as I go because it takes so long (& wasted water) to get the hot water running properly.

DiscoBeat · 19/11/2023 00:53

We use ours a lot, usually 3 times a day, but I wouldn't have two because the stuff is often the same stuff!

IhateHPSDeaneCnt · 19/11/2023 03:43

I think it was Woody Allen (cancelled) who said Cocaine was God's indicator that you were too rich. Perhaps two dishwashers is the new goal?!

Ruthietuthie · 19/11/2023 03:51

I have two. It is fantastic for parties, but beyond that I don't really use the second so much.

RhianMor · 19/11/2023 06:46

You'd never need to empty it I guess. Just use the clean stuff direct from onev and load the dirty into the other.

FrenchandSaunders · 19/11/2023 07:03

I would love this but I think it would cause rows in my house …. I would have “a system” and no other fucker would abide by it so they’d be lots of falling out. So I’ll stick to one.

Marmaladegin · 19/11/2023 07:16

FrenchandSaunders · 18/11/2023 18:30

Do you empty the clean one or just help yourself from it and then put it straight into the other one?

I have an uncle (who lives alone!) who does this, rather than putting stuff away. I can see the sense!

CasperGutman · 19/11/2023 07:18

We have two slimline dishwashers. Seems like a good compromise as it only takes 1.5× the space of a full size.

A few people have said that they'd never cope with slimines as their stuff would never fit, but I really don't see the issue. If they mean they have individual items that are too big, I'd like to know what they are. Everything from our biggest roasting tin and pasta cooker saucepan down fits in ours.

And if they mean they would have too many plates etc. for a slimline, well, that's the whole point of having two. You put one on when it's full!

If you have room, I think two actual dishwashers, even slimline ones, is better than one of the F&P ones with the drawers. For one thing, they're really expensive. For the £1500 price tag I could get six slimline dishwashers. There's absolutely no way the F&P one is going to be so much more reliable and long-lasting that this price tag is justified.

Also, if you have two separate dishwashers and one breaks down, you still have the other while you wait for a repair. When your F&P eventually breaks down, which it will, then you lose your only machine.

FrenchandSaunders · 19/11/2023 07:19

I’d also have the washing machine and dryer upstairs if I was redesigning my house. It’s odd carrying all your laundry downstairs when most of the time you’re undressing upstairs.

obv in summer you’d need to carry it down to hang it in the garden but that’s less often with our weather.

crumblingschools · 19/11/2023 07:27

@zurala why do you need to use a dishwasher 2 - 3 times a day, if there are only 4 of you in the house? Are they full every time you put them on?

SidekickSylvia · 19/11/2023 07:35

I've had two dishwashers for 10 years and wouldn't go back to having one (I have 4 teenagers though). It was recommended by the guy who designed our kitchen and I'm so glad he did. I cook a lot and we host a lot as dh and I are both from large families. I'd recommend it.

Apparently, in America, some kitchens are fitted out with a bank of dishwashers instead of base units, as there's little difference in price ($300 for a cupboard/ $400 for a dishwasher), and they're just used as cupboards, so no emptying. I'd never be able to find anything.

That’s funny. Of course it’s lazy, that’s the whole point of kitchen gadgets 😂

No we def empty both ours. It’s more that as one runs you don’t start accumulating dishes on the side. If you cook a lot, there can still be a few bits to do, but we never have mugs and glasses in the sink.

Ariela · 19/11/2023 08:01

Lavender14 · 18/11/2023 18:15

I think it depends on how many people you're going to host on a daily basis. I run a centre with about 11 people in it per day and we do one (sometimes two) runs of the dishwasher, one after breakfast and one after lunch. If you're hosting a lot or have a big family then might be worth it but if not surely the temptation is then to leave dirty stuff in them for longer because you've more space for dirty stuff? Making emptying and putting away a bigger chore?

No, there is no 'emptying and putting away' You simply empty the dishwasher as you use it, and fill the other one. When that's full, you put on a wash, and work your way through the clean stuff putting it in them other machine when dirty. And repeat.
