2 dishwashers?!

We’re re-doing our kitchen and a few people have mentioned to us recently about 2 dishwashers being game changers and we have the room - is it ridiculous or genius?!

I suppose it is a workaround for laziness.

It sure is and I'd love it. We don't have the space but if I did...

🤣
how many people do you wash up for each day?

Spottywombat · 18/11/2023 19:22

Lazy person here.

We redid our kitchen a while back (I say redid but there was very little there and I waited until nothing was functional) and it was sensible to put an integrated dishwasher in there. We already had one in the garage but it's a faff. However, it's turned out really practical, so we've just replaced the worn out garage one, so still have the two.

Two people, no visitors, all good. We use the garage one most but can't run the washing machine and it at the same time, so then we use the kitchen one. If we do have visitors, it's so helpful. I cook a lot tho, everything from scratch.

I saw it suggested on here several years ago, so knew it works well for some people.

CrochetedOwl · 18/11/2023 19:27

Actually if I could I would have 2 washing machines, 2 dishwashers and a larger oven. I already have 2 x 1 1/2 fridge freezers because I batch cook and never throw anything away but I would love a chest freezer too. I don’t have a tumble dryer or a microwave though so not that lazy 😂

Peekingovertheparapet · 18/11/2023 19:29

Unashamed owner of two dishwashers here. It’s somewhere between game changer and unnecessary luxury but I do love it.

we designed the kitchen pre covid when we entertained loads so those double dishwasher running days are not as frequent as they might have been but it’s incredible when guests are here.

I think in a household where all members were trained to load the dishwasher it would be incredible but as I’m the only one who does we do still end up with dishes building up on the side, but there is usually one on/clean and one part loaded. We probably only do 1-1.5 loads/day but if you have the room I’d definitely put it on the serious consideration list.

Peekingovertheparapet · 18/11/2023 19:31

Reading the other replies were people are saying they would prioritise oven space first, we already have two ovens, and a decent sized hob, plus the ninja and the slow cooker get their fair share of use. So I think it really is a big kitchen thing.

Mirrormeback · 18/11/2023 19:32

2 dishwashers would be handy

Artwhatttt · 18/11/2023 19:36

Having followed kitchen threads for a while it is the 2 drawer dishwasher that is most coveted. ‘Cupboards which wash themselves apparently’.

They are expensive and I read they break quickly. But I was going to get one anyway. I saw an Airbnb I had booked had one and was super excited to try before I buy. On arrival it had been replaced. So I thought that’s a sign and now I have a big standard boring one 😭

If your rich get one for me and I shall live in pleasure knowing someone has the magic drawers.

minipie · 18/11/2023 19:37

I don’t understand this. We are a family of 4, one dishwasher and the only time stuff is sat on the side is if it’s not dishwasher friendly (cast iron etc) or if someone hasn’t bothered putting it in the dishwasher yet.

I suppose there’s been the odd occasion where the dishwasher is running and we have stuff to put in it, but this must happen maximum once a month and it’s generally just one or two things not a full meal’s worth. We are quite disciplined about running it as soon as it’s full (and I am a ninja at fitting the maximum amount in) so maybe that is why.

I would far far rather have the extra storage space, a built in bin, or an extra undercounter fridge or freezer. Or if you already have all that, just a smaller kitchen and more floor space!

minipie · 18/11/2023 19:39

Artwhatt my parents used to have the dishwasher drawers. It was just the two of them so in theory they could have used them like a family having two dishwashers. In practice they only ever used the top drawer.

If I had two dishwashers I bet this is what would happen - there would be a preferred dishwasher (the one closest to the sink or crockery storage) and then the other one would get ignore. Already happens with our two ovens.

HamstersAreMyLife · 18/11/2023 19:40

I should add we have a clean and a dirty dishwasher at work and it's OK although people regularly fail to empty the clean one so we end up with 2 clean dishwashers most days which is unhelpful

LylaLee · 18/11/2023 19:40

I've seen one which is the size of an ordinary dishwasher but which is split into two halves. That might be a compromise.

whensmynexthol1day · 18/11/2023 19:44

We've just done a new kitchen and put in two. I love it already! Nothing on the side waiting to go in which when modern dishwashers have a cycle of nearly 6 hours it seems pretty difficult to avoid the with just one.
Appreciate its a huge luxury though- but if you have space it's worth doing

SageRosemary · 18/11/2023 19:45

Check out the Fisher & Paykel double drawer dishwasher, the drawers run independently of each other but it's just one machine space. Family of 4 here. I always wait until a drawer is full before running it and I run it once most days, occasionally twice. Ours is 19 years old and it is the one kitchen appliance I'd insist on having the equivalent model if it needed replacing. Very handy when we have guests, you can start one drawer now and the next one in 10 or 15 minutes or whenever you have it fully stacked. We just use the top drawer day to day, handy if your back is dodgy like mine sometimes is.

I suppose it is a workaround for laziness.

Is that not quite literally the point?

RandomMess · 18/11/2023 19:46

@minipie the idea is that you don't empty the clean one as there is no crockery storage. It gets emptied as you use the clean things.

Citygirlrurallife · 18/11/2023 19:47

I’m not sure how it’s a workaround for laziness, it’s not like it would make you eat more or use more pans but I don’t really care anyway, I’ll take any number of appliances that free up my day!

I don’t get this though, what if you run the dishwasher with 4 plates but next meal you need 8 plates? you still need crockery storage surely? And lots of what goes in our dishwasher is things like pots and pans and utensils, some are not used that often so do they just sit there in the clean dishwasher until I next need them, and in the meantime I can’t put dirty things in that dishwasher? I think the theory depends on using the same stuff in the same quantity every day which doesn’t really match up with real life…

Yes, this, I'd never cope without crockery storage. And, I couldn't imagine anyone in my house coping with a system like that.

Get clean cup from cupboard, put dirty cup in the dishwasher. I like to KISS!

Citygirlrurallife · 18/11/2023 20:00

I was under the impression you still empty the clean stuff back into cupbaords

OP posts:
RandomMess · 18/11/2023 20:02

You don't need as much crockery storage. You empty the clean stuff once the dirty one is full and needs to go on by which time on a typical for you day you will have likely already more than half emptied it as you've used stuff.

HerMammy · 18/11/2023 20:06

Two? what is this?
I have one, gets stacked through the day and put on before bed, clean dishes every morning.
An average family does not need to use huge amounts of crockery etc

isthismylifenow · 18/11/2023 20:10

It's bad enough having to unload one dishwasher, never mind two.

I don't see the point for a family of 4 or under. If something doesn't fit it, isn't it just the norm to handwash the item?. Not everything can go in the dishwasher anyway, so there is usually some things that need handwashing.

Focalpoint · 18/11/2023 20:13

Family of 5 with 3 teenagers and while we often have dirty dishes left on the countertops is not due to lack of space in the dishwasher! Put it on overnight, empty it in the morning, it's jam packed but it all still fits. Only handwash saucepans, casseroles etc

AbacusAvocado · 18/11/2023 20:15

We love having two.

On a practical level at any time one dishwasher is for dirty things and the other is for clean stuff (we have magnets on them so we know which is which).

When I want clean plates, I get them straight from the clean dishwasher. I will put clean stuff into the cupboards if I know I won’t use it for a while, or if I’ve done a load in the other dishwasher so now this clean dishwasher needs to become the new dirty one.

When I’ve used a plate, it goes straight in the dirty one, I love having nothing sitting on the side.

We’re a family of 4 but often hosting extended family (so 10 people to feed a couple of times a week).
