Was NOT expecting to see a 76ft long conservatory. I rather like it, as absolutely bonkers as it is.

Clearly showing off one's chandelier is a thing.

An orangery for all of you conservatory lovers.

Slight problem with the pool if you don't like Chelsea FC.

But at least there is a flat for one's staff.

That chandelier looks really weird from upstairs. The opening isn't big enough.

Branded pool is an interesting choice.

I have oven envy.

I was about to make an offer til I saw the pool.

I'm an Arsenal fan.

I'm just wondering how rich they must be to heat that thing in the winter!

SurreyMumOfOne · 04/12/2023 12:42

When is an Orangery not an Orangery?

I think this is stretching it a bit...

@KievLoverTwo there's gas central heating in the main house. They've installed the log burner in the conservatory and use that in the winter. The conservatory is professionally cleaned by the company who have restored it.

It's proper bonkers. I was looking at two beautiful barn conversions earlier, joined by a conservatory, 3000 sq ft in total, 500k. Now I am dreaming of living next door to my other half in 2000 sq ft of space all to myself, and hailing him to come and serve me wine from his own home, but through a covered conservatory next door :D

(It shouldn't be this way, the above sound depressing)

ooh link to the barn conversions? This is mine and DH's dream...

Watch the video. He starts off in the annexe barn iirc. It has a fully fitted out kitchen.

I can't figure out how the council tax is a D. I guess by virtue of them being joined by a conservatory they can argue that it's only one building?

Maybe I'll move to Billingham instead of Darlington (no idea where Billingham is but I'm sure it's very nice).

According to our beloved Home Secretary it's a shithole. I should stress its not, the town centre is fairly run down and there's a lot of poverty, but there are some lovely houses. I've been in far worse areas.

Darlington is much nicer and Haughton Village is lovely, although it's on the wrong side of town if you're looking at schools. And I hate to break it to the southerners but the property is probably overpriced, e.g. this cheaper priced house is in a much better location.

ooh nice... shouldn't the conservatory be described as an Orangery though?😉

Ah, that makes sense. I think I would lie awake at night worrying about how dirty it is if I couldn't get it clean.

I've just seen the house on Streetview. How much is that doggy in the window? :)

Anyway, I hope this thread gets it some much deserved attention and maybe even leads to a sale. A previous house someone posted on here a few months ago ended up on Rightmove's 'six most viewed properties this month' email newsletter.

Haughton looks very lovely.

JoyandNoel We have a lemon tree in a pot. It's so easy to look after. We keep it inside November to May and during summer stand it outside. We loads of full size beautiful lemons from it. It only needs a bit of light pruning and feeding in spring and summer.

I could live there quite happily except for two little niggles. The round conservatory would have to have roof blinds so the neighbours couldn't look in, and how tall is their cat?? That catflap is positioned very high 😯

Our cat flap is 6ft off the ground!

Haughton is lovely. Very much a village feel but with all the amenities of Darlington. I think some people hear 'north-east' and think of industrial towns but Darlo is a pretty market town just over the border from North Yorkshire.

I’m imagining the screeching of claws down glass when misjudging the height 🥴

Fun fact, in Downton Abbey Mrs Patmore's B&B is in Haughton.

abouttobecomeagrandparent · 04/12/2023 08:45

@Twiglets1 me neither but then I guess it's all relative. You buy a house you can afford to live in! It's a beautiful home and the only reason they are selling is to downsize.

Not always true, my husband is in the trade and he’s sees a lot of properties going to rack and ruin because owners have bought a house that they could afford to purchase but cannot afford to renovate, maintain or run, often people don’t realise the true costs of these houses until the bills come in, big old houses, big old bills.

So, comparing the castle to the nearby fence for scale, do we reckon that's a wendy house with pretensions?

Must be. But it looks like it’s made of stone?!

Maybe a frustrated stonemason lives there.

Or someone with blue blood who was disinherited.

I reckon part stone, mostly concrete.

I am consumed with curiosity. I really need someone local to book a viewing, take copious notes and photos and report back.

Yes, I know IABU.

I need to know what they were intending to build with the rubble on the right hand side.

It's a folly! someone has built themselves a folly on the garden of their terraced house! I love it!

Oh my word! It does have rather a lot of cracks in it though. Best get a survey done on that one.😂
