Private Rental costs around the country

We have lived in private rentals for 25 as we have never managed to purchase.

The cost of rentals in our town absolutely beggars belief! I live in a town that is badly in need of redevelopment.

Using rightmove…. Tell me the nearest town to where you life and the cost to rent a mid quality 3 bedroom family house. (No fancy houses)

I am genuinely intrigued as to what the variance will be.

Also tell me if your town or city is a tourist area or dormitory town for a large city.

My town is Barry in SW.

It is a dormitory town for Cardiff and can be seen as a tourist area.

A 3 bedroom mid quality house is £1,100 to rent.

Mansfield, £890

Not a tourist area or dormitory town.

StrongandNorthern · 30/09/2023 08:45

Around £1000 per month - Sheffield.

orangecreamdream · 30/09/2023 08:46

Hampton, the outskirts of Richmond borough London you're looking at minimum £2100 per month but there's a semi detached Victorian 3 bed cottage, very pretty but not grand, furnished for £5200 pm at the moment .

mychickshaveflown · 30/09/2023 08:55

Rural Suffolk. Rentals are like hens teeth but there is one in the village for £1000, and 2 more within a 3 mile radius at approx the same rent.

NoWordForFluffy · 30/09/2023 09:00

Southport. Touristy and probably could be considered as partly dormitory for Liverpool / Preston / Manchester (to a lesser extent). £950.00 - £1,150.00.

Cupofteaandcrackers · 30/09/2023 09:00

Northern Town, £900- £1000 for the standard area. More for the surrounding villages.

PictureFrameWindow · 30/09/2023 09:01

Zone 3 London, not at all fancy - £2400pcm

Samanabanana · 30/09/2023 09:02

Only two 3 bed houses available to rent in the whole town, neither particularly fancy. Both £1000/pcm. I'm in Yorkshire.

OhhhhhhhhBiscuits · 30/09/2023 09:05

Bournemouth approx 1500 for 3 bed.

Edited to add that's the cheapest available. The average as I have just looked is approx £1700 for a mid range one.

Squirrelsnut · 30/09/2023 09:08

Banbury, average about 1200.

caringcarer · 30/09/2023 09:09

Tamworth 3 bedroom house £950 overspill North for Birmingham.

caringcarer · 30/09/2023 09:10

In Tamworth and surrounding villages very few houses to rent. Some weeks nothing at all.

pewl · 30/09/2023 09:13

London zone 2, £7k a month for a 3 bed house for a comparison. But on a budget you'd go for a flat not a house. You can rent an ex-council flat for £2,300 pcm (though it's half a mile from our house, and would be more expensive closer to us).

StiggyZardust · 30/09/2023 09:14

My student son is in a shared house in zone 2 London. 4 bedrooms (one is a converted reception room), very basic house, £3200 a month between them.

userxx · 30/09/2023 09:15

Cheapest one is a standard semi detached - £1550.00. Won't be on the market long due to price, next ones jump up to £1950 and above. South Manchester.

WombatBombat · 30/09/2023 09:15

Big town in South West - £1400. Huge competition due to influx of people working on nearby mega project.

Grew up in industrial northern town that is a major train hub - £950.

Chikasan · 30/09/2023 09:16

Norwich - between £1100 and £1500 pm

Abitwobbley · 30/09/2023 09:17

Commuter town north of London. £1200, but this is lower than average for a 3 bed in this area.

MyCousinDaphne · 30/09/2023 09:20

Cambridge about £1750 but does depend on which part of the city

Enterthewolves · 30/09/2023 09:22

Hove - average on Rightmove round here is £2,000 to £2,250 a month for a bog standard three bed terrace or semi. Maximum housing allowance for a 3 bed in Brighton & Hove is £1,196.70 a month and the cheapest three bed on Rightmove for the whole city (Brighton&Hove) is £1,650 a month

JaninaDuszejko · 30/09/2023 09:30

North east, not much on offer, average rental cost ~£750pcm (range of £550-1200pcm). In comparison, there's a 3 bed maisonette round the corner from me (very nice area) on sale for £130K so why rent.

spookehtooth · 30/09/2023 09:31

Chikasan · 30/09/2023 09:16

Norwich - between £1100 and £1500 pm

I had a look and I'd say £900-£1200 is fairer, and more consistent with my rental which only started in January. Only about Around 30 of the 45 ish places I saw were in that bracket.

What you actually get who knows. The places that were still available to view when I contacted agents went quickly, I felt I had to decide and ask to rent ASAP after viewing

MothralovesGojira · 30/09/2023 09:34

Nice, sought after area to the east of Southampton £1600-£1700 but some are actually asking £1900- £2000 which is mindboggling. We currently pay £1150 but landlord is itching to put it up but can't because gas check is overdue, half the lights don't work and windows need replacing.
In the next village over (well known due to a tv series) you can get something for only £1300 but that's because the schools are bad and there's a huge anti-social behaviour issue from one of the village estates.
Nice houses in Southampton itself are £1500 but in the less nice areas you can get something for £1100- £1200 but that comes with high crime levels/anti-social behaviour issues.
