Please help me name my house

So as a change from all the “help me name my baby” threads please can you help me name my house. Just buying my forever home which is perfect except for the name which is a random one word that means nothing to me. It is a detached double fronted symmetrical brick house like a dolls house It is not grand but I think it is definitely a house not a cottage. lots of trees but not one obvious one so I cant call it an Oak House or Beech House Names I have considered and discarded are Fox house, pheasant house (because we have both) orchard house (ditto). Brick house. I want something solid and classic but not pretentious. Any suggestions would be grateful received. . It does not have a number.

How about Belleview? Awful

HelebethH · 08/01/2023 08:05

@Newhousename The picture has a nod to regency architecture. Obviously without seeing your actual house I am not sure of its age but suspect it is about the same as mine. Have you thought of a name to match that era? Perhaps something like George House or Hanover House. Good luck with your search for a name

tedglenn · 08/01/2023 08:07

Unless the current name is something awful and clearly recently made up, I think you should keep it. Our house (very similar looking to yours!) has what sounds like a random one-word name, which when we asked the locals about it, was the name of the man who built the house (1900s), and the 'house' suffix had been lost over time. So if the man's name was Johnson (it wasn't!), the house was originally called 'Johnson House', and now is just called 'Johnson'. IMO it would be wrong for us to change the name as it is the history and identity of the house (even if it is a little bit boring, and not a typical house name!)

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 08/01/2023 08:30

There was a house near where I lived that was called 'Selohesra'.

I assumed it was Spanish but it turns out it's 'Arseholes' spelt backwards. Apparently it was owned by a policeman. 😬

I've just found out that there is a company with this name too, I would assume that it is a reflection of the Directors.

Newhousename · 08/01/2023 12:14

Thankyou again for continuing to come up with ideas. To answer again some questions
there is no number. I promise I will make a huge lit up sign with the new name. Well maybe not lit up
the current name is indeed a random one word. Not quite Bevron or dunroamin but definitely no local or historical significance and does need to go
I love dolls house (but there is another in the area sadly so can’t use. I think button house is GREAT but it would be a bit random for me. I also love George House but I have a George and that would not be good for the ego!

The Retreat?

Etonianmother · 08/01/2023 14:48

There's a school house called The Timbralls, which I'd be tempted to steal if my house needed a name Grin

What are the roads near to your house called? If you live on Station Road, for example, then you could call it Station House. That sort of thing, anyway.

I can see why you want to change it if it's a Dunroamin type name.

ShillyShallySherbet · 08/01/2023 14:50

What variety of apples predominantly grow on the trees in the orchard? Could that be the name?

FloreatEtona · 08/01/2023 14:51

There is indeed.

Pipsquiggle · 08/01/2023 14:59

Completely agree with you OP about changing the name of your home

We live in a 'named' home and we are the 3rd set of owners.
The first owner's called our home an awful name - think Bevron but much worse.
Thankfully the 2nd owners changed the name to something unique and fitting to the property and we decided to keep it

I would avoid all apple references as there are so many houses around called 'apple......' or 'orchard.....'

How about Chester House or Chesters

Pipsquiggle · 08/01/2023 15:09

Which county /area are you in?

I love Georgian /sash Windows homes.

I think you need to call it something in keeping with the style.

Think of a period drama, where a family or group are having a bracing walk in the countryside , it suddenly starts pouring down and blowing a gale. They are near your home and say "We will seek shelter at (your home's name). The Newhousename family are always so hospitable"

Or a MN favourite - Chester Draws 😂

FloreatEtona · 08/01/2023 15:45

Deva House would be better.

PokemonPasta · 08/01/2023 16:53

If the current name is naff and there's no number, it must've had a different name in the past. Try old maps and see if you can find it.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 08/01/2023 18:43

@Pipsquiggle

Actually I think your MN name would be a fantastic name for a house

Pipsquiggle House

.. it has a sort of Dickensian ring to it!
(or cottage, if it is smaller)

eurochick · 08/01/2023 21:39

The Burrow? (To link to the foxes)

Something relating to the orchard - for example, Pear Tree House.

Or something relating to the local area. For example, there used to be quarrying here so there are some Quarry House type names.

The favourite house name I have seen is High Trees. But only works if you have them!

Yellownotblue · 09/01/2023 01:00

Peace house. This is what my parents used to call their house (different language/country).

If going Roman - Caligula House (or better yet, Caracalla). Let people guess what’s going on in there 😂

Or my favourite: Thistledoo.

Yellownotblue · 09/01/2023 01:00

Alternatively, consider YABU House 😁

I adore both 'Peace House' and 'Caracalla' ❤️

ICrunchCrispsNotNumbers · 09/01/2023 01:02

Sorry, Caracalla ❤️

Fraaahnces · 09/01/2023 02:05

What about the Dolls House/ Dollse House? That’s how you described it. (It’s beautiful!)

MagnoliatheMagnificent · 09/01/2023 02:16

We always joke we should call our house ‘Manyana’ which means ‘Tomorrow’ as we never get round to doing things!
