So as a change from all the “help me name my baby” threads please can you help me name my house. Just buying my forever home which is perfect except for the name which is a random one word that means nothing to me. It is a detached double fronted symmetrical brick house like a dolls house It is not grand but I think it is definitely a house not a cottage. lots of trees but not one obvious one so I cant call it an Oak House or Beech House Names I have considered and discarded are Fox house, pheasant house (because we have both) orchard house (ditto). Brick house. I want something solid and classic but not pretentious. Any suggestions would be grateful received. . It does not have a number.

Edgar House
Claverton House
Wick House
Liberty House
Springfield House
The Sun House
Treetops
Rosebank

The Haven sounds like an old people's home!

Gorgeous house - I would plant lavender up the path and call it Lavender House. Or paint the door sage green and call it Sage House. Or sow lots of bluebells and call it Bluebell House. Or plant a cherry and call it... you get the picture 😂

KirstenBlest · 07/01/2023 19:35

Leave it as it is unless it is awful, or find out if it had a previous more meaningful name.
I can't see the point of changing it to something unless it has meaning.
Names like The Haven and The Laurels are a bit bland.

KirstenBlest · 07/01/2023 19:41

Top 50 house names (might be a bit dated)

Spanielsarepainless · 07/01/2023 19:44

I must admit I like Orchard House.
Bramley House
Codlings (an old apple variety)
Russets
Pippin House
Damson House

mathanxiety · 07/01/2023 19:46

Look into the history of the house. There should be records.

You may find a previous owner's surname or first name, or some aspect of the history that appeals to you. It might have been a rectory or a dower house or the home of a local notable.

Look into local dialects to find a name for certain trees or streams locally, etc.

jevoudrais · 07/01/2023 19:49

I know a Kia Lami. Alternative spelling of a phrase in African translating as 'our home' the owner told me.

jevoudrais · 07/01/2023 19:51

Foxearth? Anglo Saxon for the fox's den.

OP As others have said, you can't just do this. It needs official recording. Others have sent you the links.
If that does not take place, no online company - and even many others who work via post etc in the offline world - is going to accept your address as valid. The big databases of 'known' addresses are referred to by everyone for validation - from banks, utility companies etc downwards.
I'm not saying that this is right, but it is a fact. Over 20 years ago, we built a new house on a 'virgin' site. We did register the address, but even so, for years faced several address problems.

OP has already stated they've checked with the council and are aware how to do it.

LuckeyBuoy · 07/01/2023 19:56

Is there anything local to the area, rather than specific to the house? (Eg China Clay House if you lived in St Austell - crap example, but along those lines). My previous house was called Sandstones (just that - not Sandstones House) because it was - guess what - built of sandstone.

geraniumthefourth · 07/01/2023 19:58

Dashwood House.

I just like the name Dashwood Grin

LaTangerina · 07/01/2023 19:59

Stars Hollow

peppermintteadrinker · 07/01/2023 20:03

Definitely find out the history of the house.

Most of these suggestions are pretty standard and some are really cheesy. I think a lovely house like that deserves something that says something about the house. My ex mil sold her house and they renamed it The Shambles or something... just awful and the beautiful house did not deserve that undignified name. It was well kept and classy when she sold it!

Newhousename · 07/01/2023 20:10

Thankyou all so much. The answer seems to be some sort of tree. So I just have to find a tree that I like the look of AND the name of and get planting. I love magnolia trees but the word makes me think of eighties paint. I love oak trees and the word oak but tree far to big. I love ceonothus but too complicated for a name. Maybe I should move this thread to gardening now :-)

Someone at my school moved from 'the big city' into a charming little cottage in the Brecon Beacons and changed its perfectly normal number to "Ty Bach" (The Little House).

She did not understand why the children in our Welsh Speaking primary school found it so funny!

So my top tip is don't name it using the regional name for the toilet.

3ormoredogs · 07/01/2023 20:17

My neighbours have Elvin House.

I always imagine something out of the hobbit whenever I walk past😄

Most on our street are something view…sea view, hill view etc

KirstenBlest · 07/01/2023 20:18

Tŷ bach is 'small house' but is also the Welsh euphemism for lavatory.

Tŷ Mawr just means Big House.

Treename House or The Treenames seems unimaginative to me.

PlayerOneNotReady · 07/01/2023 20:18

Quercus House (latin name for oak tree) ?

CellophaneFlower · 07/01/2023 20:19

Wisteria. Laburnum.

Most trees can be grown ornamental and kept small anyway. Even willows.

2FelisCatus · 07/01/2023 20:23

I named the kids playhouse "Hootenanny house". Feel free to steal!

Haven House or The Haven

The Haven is the name of a group of former rape crisis centres. They do an amazing job but probably not what you're looking for in a house name.

Shunkleisshiny · 07/01/2023 20:26

My friends parents house was called 'Chimneys' which I thought was lovely. Yes, it had two prominent chimneys!

Harry's End?

CoffeeBeansGalore · 07/01/2023 20:37

In Oxford the red brick college is called Keble, so Keble House?
Rowan Tree
Gowanbrae
Holly House
Hartley House
Hilltop House
Pipkins
Lavender House (plant some in the front)
Redhouse
If near woods/forest - Woodlands House/Corner/Edge

Can you mix & match any family names, ie Anne & Bill become Anbil House, Carole & Simon become Casie House.

What does it overlook? Hill View/Valley View/River View.
