Please help me name my house

So as a change from all the “help me name my baby” threads please can you help me name my house. Just buying my forever home which is perfect except for the name which is a random one word that means nothing to me. It is a detached double fronted symmetrical brick house like a dolls house It is not grand but I think it is definitely a house not a cottage. lots of trees but not one obvious one so I cant call it an Oak House or Beech House Names I have considered and discarded are Fox house, pheasant house (because we have both) orchard house (ditto). Brick house. I want something solid and classic but not pretentious. Any suggestions would be grateful received. . It does not have a number.

Why not see if you can find out who built it / first lived there? There might be something there - their name or profession could make a good name.

As an aside can I please show off the name of my Nan's house which she called Llamedos. It is not a Welsh town and has to be read backwards. Grin

Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to comment. They are all helpful to spark the imagination. I have done some research and some Roman objects have been found in the site. So am polishing my Latin. There is not space for a Quercus. would Felix House be a bit feline?

If the current name is am old one that reflects the history of the area, please consider keeping it. You may not understand the meaning, but that doesn't mean it's meaningless.

This goes quadruple if the name is in a regional minority language, e.g. a Cornish name in Cornwall, Scots or Gallic name in Scotland or a Welsh name in Wales.

If it's your forever home and you won't be moving again ,how about
Dunroamin. I saw a house with this name in Scotland which indicated the owners were settled in their house .

MakkaPakkas · 07/01/2023 21:15

Dolls house

We were house-hunting and found a real stunner - quite old, masses of character, good provenance, costly refurb (the kitchen had 3 cupboards and no room for a washing machine or dishwasher). I did a search on its history and found it had sat by a brook which had once had a ford you could cross to get to the pub but a bridge had been built over it and the house itself had been a school house (the owner's name formed part of the school name). There was also a well which allegedly had a tunnel at the bottom to access some fancy big house.
I've bored you long enough, but this was to illustrate there was an awful lot of history that could inspire a new name. Have you checked the property history?

It’s not very evocative. I think a good house name should conjure up the feel of the place.

HippoInABadWig · 07/01/2023 22:03

There are a few houses round here called 'Humblebee House' - it's local dialect for bumblebee.

I like the sound of it.

Barrythetimesprout · 07/01/2023 22:06

My parents retired to Pogles' Wood. I thought it was a brilliant house name.

Wakk · 07/01/2023 22:07

Maximus Housimus

LubaLuca · 07/01/2023 22:30

Is the current name totally random, or just something you wouldn't pick? If it's always had that name, and not something the previous owners chose e.g. Casa Bevron, I'd stick with it.

ghjklo · 07/01/2023 22:32

Thankyou all so much. The answer seems to be some sort of tree. So I just have to find a tree that I like the look of AND the name of and get planting. I love magnolia trees but the word makes me think of eighties paint. I love oak trees and the word oak but tree far to big. I love ceonothus but too complicated for a name. Maybe I should move this thread to gardening now :-)

ceonothus Is a type of buckthorn, Buckthorn House?

however having had various addresses not officially recognised by postal services (badly registered flats for example) I wouldn’t change it unless it’s the dunroamin type name. If it is maybe ask neighbours what it used to be called!

Tull · 07/01/2023 22:48

We named ours after our pet whom we absolutely adore - he has a regal name! What about something like that?

FunnysInLaJardin · 07/01/2023 22:58

ooh I have a thing about house names in that they must be after and actual thing or physical feature.

Most houses here have names and my big no's are named after a town, country or place you have visited or come from ie Rimini, Mirfield, Capri Chester etc

But yes to Holly House, Greenfields, Rose Cottage, White Gables etc

So OP what features does your house have and where is it situated?

I have obvs massively over thought this on the bus every day to work Grin
