Please help me name my house

So as a change from all the “help me name my baby” threads please can you help me name my house. Just buying my forever home which is perfect except for the name which is a random one word that means nothing to me. It is a detached double fronted symmetrical brick house like a dolls house It is not grand but I think it is definitely a house not a cottage. lots of trees but not one obvious one so I cant call it an Oak House or Beech House Names I have considered and discarded are Fox house, pheasant house (because we have both) orchard house (ditto). Brick house. I want something solid and classic but not pretentious. Any suggestions would be grateful received. . It does not have a number.

Don't you think it might be bad luck to change the name ? I always feel we're custodians of houses and to my mind it's like adopting a child and changing their name and identity. Sorry, I'm not a particularly woop person but I just thought I'd offer my twopence & say the house might be best left named as is. Plus from experience living in a village with no numbers and 300+ named houses, if people don't know the name of your house you'll get missed deliveries ALL the time so a change as nobody else can direct people to you so could be tricky from that perspective too.

Acorn House ( from little acorns oaks grow ) Oaken View.
Have you got a river near you ? Thameswood / Severn View .
Favourite author ?
Is the house on a slope ? Field Rise.

We’ve recently moved house to a house which these days just has a number, but have discovered the original name of the house in the deeds. Do you have the deeds? Are any names recorded that you could resurrect?

PicturesOfDogs · 07/01/2023 23:09

Half stone house?

You said it looked like a dolls house, so I googled famous dollhouses and that’s the only one that sounds like it would work on an actual house (Queen Mary’s House or Stettheimers House doesn’t have the same ring 😂)

our house was originally called White Gables and then changed to L'Ecurie then back to White Gables - which I much prefer tbh.

No bad luck as far as I know!

Foxgloves or foxglove house (and plant some) then you get the fox in there in a different way

You could look at an apple variety name you like and stick in that sort of apple tree (or pear etc).there is so many names you are bound to like one (maybe not 'pink lady house' or 'granny Smith house 🤣)

Of course there is 'apple tree house' but that's a show on CBBC.

Honeysuckle (I don't think that need house after it for some reason)

The Spinney

The Hawthornes / Hawthorne House

The Hearth / Hearth House

The Glade / Glade House

I know just what I'm going to call my house one day , and it came from a Robert MacFarlane poem about The Hare. Here's a Robert MacFarlane about a fox incase that helps. The Lost Words book is great for inspiration on natural themes.

Beautyfadesdumbisforever · 07/01/2023 23:26

If you are in a rural area how about looking on an OS map for local geographical features especially anything with a local dialect.

DamnYerEyes · 07/01/2023 23:33

Redbrick House
The Red House
Doll House (alternative to dolls house)
The Tree House

Look into the history of the house. There should be records.

You may find a previous owner's surname or first name, or some aspect of the history that appeals to you. It might have been a rectory or a dower house or the home of a local notable.

Look into local dialects to find a name for certain trees or streams locally, etc.

This. There may also be old names for fields/patches of wood etc in the area?

A anthropologist friend of mine in Sweden recently got a half-year gig with a southern municipality trying to come up with street names for as yet unclaimed areas. It involved much of the same sort of thing - looking into old maps, cadastre records, newspapers to figure out related historical names to then put to residents to make a decision. Of all the fun things to do and get paid for 😉

Underminer · 08/01/2023 03:21

There is a house near me called “Tantrums” 🤪

What about Bramley House?

slamwich · 08/01/2023 06:46

Mulberry house

daisychain01 · 08/01/2023 07:05

I associate The Laurels and The Hawthornes with nursing homes, but that could just be me Smile

and names like Badgers Rest with a new build housing estate.

Dunroamin Homeleigh - a bit twee...

sorry I'm not much help. I used to live in a house called Avon, which I couldn't stand, so changed the name, so I can see why you'd want to change it if you can't stand what it's called.

Looking at your photos of houses like your's has made it more difficult because I can't really think of a name that suits the appearance.

Casa Mia (Spanish for My House, but sounds a lot nicer!) is the only idea I can come up with.

Eminybob · 08/01/2023 07:31

There is a house near me called house at pooh corner. Loved that.

ColinRobinsonsfamiliar · 08/01/2023 07:32

Not read whole thread but there was a huge long thread on here a few weeks back with people raging about houses with names and not numbers.
A plea from someone who has wasted SO much time driving up and down searching for a cute house with a name not a clear number….

For the sake of every delivery driver but especially district nurses, paramedic, police & fire crews, make the name of your house on a large, reflective, very easy to see from the road signage.
It literally could be the difference of life and death one day.

seriouslyjaded · 08/01/2023 07:36

As a student I used to live opposite a house called Costa Lotta 😂

But I think something-view is lovely. What can you see from your nicest room? Meadow view....etc.

ICrunchCrispsNotNumbers · 08/01/2023 07:41

Sanctuary House ❤️

ICrunchCrispsNotNumbers · 08/01/2023 07:45

Or The Sanctuary. ❤️

CellophaneFlower · 07/01/2023 15:52

Does it have to be something 'house'?

Pheasant View? Obviously it's true and in keeping of the house plus it's a bit of a play on 'pleasant view' so sounds quite nice to me.

How about Belleview? ❤️

RampantIvy · 08/01/2023 07:56

If the house has no number I assume it already has a name?
I would be worried about the practical aspect of not receiving my post or online deliveries not arriving.

I would also keep the name relevant to the immediate area rather than something personal because it won't mean anything to the subsequent house owners.

For example our house is called Hill Top because we live on top of a hill. (Although we never use the name as it also has a number and we are always being stopped by delivery drivers asking for where the other houses with just names in our road are)
