What's the best way to find a very rural hidden gem?

I'm looking to relocate and can go anywhere in the UK but I'm finding it so hard to discover the type of property I want. I'd love a detached house/cottage somewhere leafy/hilly in an out-of-the-way area. Preferably nestled in a very overgrown garden, with a distance between me & the next house. My principle 'want' in a new place is the outlook, so gardens and view. I can work with any style of building. Old auntie's neglected cottage would be fab. Rightmove doesn't allow you to search by outlook or garden/land. Is there another way to search rather than hiring a location agent?

You can use the map function on Rightmove to identify what properties are in rural areas. You can check out Savills which deals in landed estates but also sells houses. Check church properties for sale. Most of the older churches have property for sale. Rural houses/cottages are also advertised for sale in Country Life - you can see the adverts online.

If you can tell us your budget I'm sure we can look for you and post properties that tick the boxes. Quite a few round here that might be candidates depending on how many bedrooms you are after.

That's handy. So am I! Thanks for asking, OP and thanks for suggestions It'sDinah!

I'm constantly getting things through my door from estate agents that apparently specialise in people moving from
City to country. Like it's a massive incentive for me to want to move out. There are companies out there that do it. I always chuck em away though so not sure what the company is

Rural scene estate agents are usually quite good.

Look in Shropshire , Wales , Cumbria , Northumberland , Wiltshire.
All hilly and lots of places in those areas can have our of the way areas.

sunshinesupermum · 13/05/2022 09:32

happystrummer that house is divine! can't imagine it will be on the market for long!

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 13/05/2022 10:03

How rural are you talking? I grew up in the highlands and know people who live 15 miles down single track lanes
Or somewhere in say Lancashire where you have space, no direct neighbors and a nice outlook but you can drive to a town in 15/20 mins

minipie · 13/05/2022 10:04

Rightmove and Primelocation both allow a keyword search so you can put in “rural” and “view”. Or private, outlook, etc.

TheDogsMother · 13/05/2022 10:06

That is beautiful ! I want to move in immediately.

minipie · 13/05/2022 10:09

I’m sure you realise this but auntie’s neglected cottage with overgrown garden will likely need a fair bit spending on it (new electrics, plumbing, windows etc) so allow headroom in your budget for that

Wheretheskyisblue · 13/05/2022 10:17

If you use rightmove on a desktop rather than the app it now allows you to do a keyword search. I was looking for a similar rural property and put in acres as a keyword which did help a bit in finding property on a decent plot.

Ragged · 13/05/2022 10:18

Not to mention OP will need to spend more on a better quality car, oil-fired heating, driving further distances to get any goods, septic tank.

a distance between me & the next house

How big a distance?

gardens and view

So... Fens are out? There are views from fens, due to few trees, of course.

Try these sites.
www.uklanddirectory.org.uk/building-land-for-sale.asp
to find houses/cottages use the drop down menu on planning status select "existing residential use" and then select location.

www.uklandandfarms.co.uk/ is also very good.

On Rightmove whereabouts is this function? Am looking at it on desktop and can't for the life of me find anywhere to search for 'acres'

Wheretheskyisblue · 13/05/2022 14:18

At the top of the page it says prioritise properties with keyword. I think this option only appears after you have searched. See above the property photo on the attached.

minipie · 13/05/2022 15:04

Yes you have to do a search first and then +Keyword appears at the top of the list. Works for me on browser version on phone and ipad, I haven’t tried on the app or on a pc

Honeyroar · 13/05/2022 16:04

Oh wow, all these years property porning and I never knew that you could search for land etc! Amazing- thanks.

GaiaWise · 13/05/2022 16:06

Ceredigion or Carmarthenshire. Look at BJP estate agents or West Wales Property Services
