What's the best way to find a very rural hidden gem?

I'm looking to relocate and can go anywhere in the UK but I'm finding it so hard to discover the type of property I want. I'd love a detached house/cottage somewhere leafy/hilly in an out-of-the-way area. Preferably nestled in a very overgrown garden, with a distance between me & the next house. My principle 'want' in a new place is the outlook, so gardens and view. I can work with any style of building. Old auntie's neglected cottage would be fab. Rightmove doesn't allow you to search by outlook or garden/land. Is there another way to search rather than hiring a location agent?

So far I love the hills of Monmouthshire, Shropshire is lovely too and Wales. Scotland is stunning but I worry I'd find it too cold & overcast.

What you are looking for is currently asking for £1m in the Lakes I'm afraid.

This one for example is 'aunties neglected house' and probably needs half again spending on it after you have bought it.

The house that got away for me was on Anglesea. It looked like it had been through a few changes over the years. It had mature gardens of about an acre and only 3 or 4 other houses nearby. Dripping with charm & character, but I wasn't ready when I saw it.

This one's not in budget but I thought it was worth posting for the gawp factor.

The first link I posted is more or less opposite this property.

If you watch BBC Wales 'Hidden' (crime drama) the main detective lives on of the little island on the menai straits accessed by a causeway.

Do you really want rural? We thought we did but couldn't find exactly what we wanted so we rented (very rural) and actually I don't like it! I feel very isolated, there are weird noises at night 😂 lots of creatures that I wasn't prepared for. We are looking for slightly less rural now. Glad we rented for a bit.

I live over 300m up a mountain, 1/4 mile from National Park Boundary and in a UNESCO world heritage site, but also 10 minutes from the main North Wales Expressway & Bangor which has a reasonable selection of shops and Amenities.

I think it is possible to find a balance, but it comes at a price, and houses round me are selling really quickly when they do come on the market (my house has more than doubled in value since we bought it 7 years ago). It also generally requires knowing an area or some very good luck.

Last week I discovered two roads of lovely welsh slate miners cottages last week in a totally awesome location 5 miles from my house, that I didn't know existed (and my job means I get out and about locally). Trawlling rightmove can only tell you so much.

That castle is incredible @JesusInTheCabbageVan and actually very near me! Shame it’s out of my budget, I can just see myself living in a castle!

I fell in love with this it's sadly way out of my price range. Good luck with your search it's so exciting you can literally go anywhere

That’s gorgeous! Sadly it’s flooded recently and the ceilings in the bedrooms are all low. Otherwise perfect!

Try going on filters and adding detached and land at the same time (as well as a location of course).

Honeyroar · 20/05/2022 18:43

That is lovely Sollasollew. If it had five acres as well it would be perfect!

Not sure this is remote enough, but it's a lovely spot, on the offers dyke path in Powys.
