What's going to be the new equivalent of "entirely grey house"?

Mooching on Instagram for paint colour inspiration and noticed the trend for grey walls, grey carpet, grey sofa, grey curtains etc etc definitely seems to be dropping off, but can't see a clear contender rising to replace it yet. Anyone more in touch with interior design have any suggestions for what the next big trend will be??

We've always chosen deeper colours and painted the hall of our Victorian house grey (and yellow, with print room decoupage 😮) in the early 1990s! Back then it wasn't a thing - my dad described it as battleship grey, lol - so we had to have it mixed.

Our current house (400 years old) was a bland magnolia box with splashes of Barney purple when we purchased it four years ago. All original features ripped out.

Gradually we've been adding the period character back in and yes, that includes some panelling (constructed in timber by DH) 🙄

We liked the maximalist look long before it was on trend - loads of antiques and vintage stuff collected over the years here - pattern and colour everywhere! We do have bird wallpaper, but it's either William Morris (again we've been into the Arts and Crafts movement for twenty years, not just because it's fashionable.... again!) or Voysey. Our living room is olive green with an original art nouveau velvet sofa (and a modern cream linen one) with books everywhere.

We also have gallery walls - not photos but prints and some - cheap or done by me - original art. And a dark blue hall and millennial pink bathroom! The main bedroom has a mural that I painted myself. All this will probably look dates very soon, but it won't be going as we chose it because we love the look 😁

Our kitchen is probably the least on trend room in the house - we have a red range cooker, oval room blue cabinets and the worktops are a mix of iroko and anthracite microcement......oh and a second hand teal velvet sofa.

I definitely won't be painting anything peri because it's the latest thing, lol! I had a bedroom that colour in the nineties and hated it 😂

DATED, not dates, lol!

MiniPumpkin · 10/01/2022 03:25

‘Greige ‘.

I think the mixture of browns, creams and golds will come back.

We got rid of grey in the living room, replaced it with dulux brave ground. Very warm colour. Not to everyone’s taste but I love it

There’s a new trend of having the same colour on a wall from floor to ceiling ie wall, panelling, skirting board, all in the same dark teal or green. Looks very modern but I don’t like it!

JustJam4Tea · 10/01/2022 06:05

Our neighbour repaints every year, does it herself, beautifully. Hers is all greens and blues at moment, strong colours, I’ll see what she does next.

We have a whole house to redecorate, 109 years old. Just put in panelling on the stairs, mdf and love it.

Torn between posh magnolia everywhere and William Morris wallpaper everywhere….

I painted in dart blue in May 2019 it's just starting to be a dated look now. Grey started at around 2012 so it's overdue to disappear thank goodness, it can look nice but some houses look dreadful with all grey throughout.

Earthy tones are the trend forecast for 2022 and 2023.

Anyone remember Orla Kiely? Those are the kind of colours Smile

Minimalist is in. Get rid off all the stuff.
Five years later, maximalist is in. Buy all the stuff.

And so on. Sad. What happened to houses evolving through a person's life, not changing with every new fad? You'd think we'd be more aware of the marketing tactics behind these trends - buy all the things.....

SeeMyLanyardAndWeepBitch · 10/01/2022 08:23

i think we've been seeing it for a while in the floor to ceiling darkest blue including the skirtings and doors and windowframes.

Now being replaced with bottle green.

Theredjellybean · 10/01/2022 08:34

I'm. Staying grey... I love it...

SeeMyLanyardAndWeepBitch · 10/01/2022 08:46

@IcedCoffeeMilkshake

Well, I went to see a very fashionable friend's new house. She has painted the walls lemon yellow and has beige curtains with gold and black velvet flock.

Not quite my style- but then again I am just cottoning onto the grey trend now so what do I know!

I am usually very open to bold decorating ideas and brave choices but that sounds absolutely hideous.
Ohyesiam · 10/01/2022 08:54

@DappledThings

You really are embarrassing yourself now aren't you? confused I think not getting the joke in the first place is far more embarrassing
To me it seems that not getting a joke is a misunderstanding, but sarcastic put downs are something to be embarrassed about.
SeeMyLanyardAndWeepBitch · 10/01/2022 09:03

The colour combination currently being pushed by Farrow and Ball is a very strong leaf green paired with a sort of pale shrimp pink. I love the green (love most greens tbf) but hate the pink.

I think we are in for a huge revival in deep, mossy, jungle-y greens on walls and cupboards and I'm expecting to see lots of rust/terracotta/burnt orange or deep, rich coral in accessories.

Also lots of very bright yellows.

I feel like the green and pink mentioned above has already been around a while

longtompot · 10/01/2022 10:04

Well according to Good housekeeping magazines 2022 predictions, the 70s are going to feature a lot.
Honestly, reading through it just reminds me of the board meetings in Ab Fab discussing what's going in the next issue. "There will be lots of colour, eye shadow, lipstick!" Grin

Exactly my feelings! It is just more mindless consumerism.
TellMeItsPossible · 10/01/2022 10:24

I'm about as far from fashionable as possible, and have very little confidence in my ability to choose a good course scheme, so I pinch ideas from F&B, colour match their paints with dulux heritage (half the price, and much, much better coverage) and hope for the best.

TellMeItsPossible · 10/01/2022 10:24

Weredone · 10/01/2022 10:26

@realhousewifeofmodor I don’t think the panelling is going to date in our Victorian house - it’s survived the last 100 years Grin

Glowtastic · 10/01/2022 10:26

I think greens and jewel colours. Really like the little Greene paints we've just used.

Sorry should have specified fake panelling, added in more recently. Like multiple other posters have subsequently pointed out, it's currently everywhere and will therefore date.

vickyc90 · 10/01/2022 10:36

Jewel tones and panelling seems to be all over Pinterest.
