What's going to be the new equivalent of "entirely grey house"?

Mooching on Instagram for paint colour inspiration and noticed the trend for grey walls, grey carpet, grey sofa, grey curtains etc etc definitely seems to be dropping off, but can't see a clear contender rising to replace it yet. Anyone more in touch with interior design have any suggestions for what the next big trend will be??

@Ikeabag

The whole industrial look was a flash in the pan too, wasn't it? None of these things spread like the grey though. I still love a good old orangey pine farmer style kitchen cupboard. I have 90s cross stitch sunflower taste deep down and I'll have really mixed feelings if/when it ever comes back. There's nothing more satisfying than a house popping up on rightmove that hasn't been touched in 30 years... aside from the fact that someone possibly loved it for all those years until they died and that's why it's getting sold.
You would be in heaven in the house I've just bought it has a pine kitchen with pine panelling that goes all the way through the hallway and pine clad stairs Grin. So. Much. Pine. Except the doors, which are inexplicably pink gloss.

DH and I have been house hunting and we keep coming across houses with black tiled kitchens and bathrooms, with those dangly lights that look like old lightbulbs with orange filaments.
Some even have red cupboard doors.
They resemble a scene from "The Pit & the Pendulum" ! Shock

HerbertChops · 09/01/2022 16:39

Pantone colour of the year is mid purple so expect to see that everywhere soon.

GuyFawkesDay · 09/01/2022 16:42

Lilacs are apparently coming back in. I'm not sure tbh!

The japandi earthy colours, minimal, plants will be big I think

ClaudineClare · 09/01/2022 16:53

It is pointless trying to keep up with interior fashions, costly too. I prefer a look which has developed over time, made up of things bought over the years. At least changing wall coverings is relatively cheap, but I could not be bothered changing every couple of years to keep on trend. Once a decade is probably as often as I can bear.

Ikeabag · 09/01/2022 16:54

Summersdreaming - I had a pine pannelled bedroom as a kid, with a pine panel frame that the bed box fit into. And those slatted wardrobes too, that I was constantly kicking at night because the whole arrangement was fixed around the box over the stairs. I found photos recently, it was like an orange log cabin. Depending on the pink of the doors (like, light barbie pink or eye bleeding magenta) I would probably really enjoy your house!

Red and black was big in the eighties, so that fashion has rolled round again!

Agree if it’s in dunelm it’s already done, and that wallpaper isn’t great but I understand what the poster is saying, not sure that brown would ever take off though 🤮
It took off pretty well in the 70s.......

Just sitting here looking at my navy sofas and my leaf pattern decals 😬🤣

Faevern · 09/01/2022 17:08

My neighbour who is always one step ahead with fashion has just decorated in dark blue and navy.

I’ve seen a lot of this type of thing recently

I don't mind the kitchen itself but the panelling is a bit much.

Unfortunately they are a kind of sad, pale salmon colour. It's a mad mix of 70's, 80's and 90's. I promise not to paint it all grey though Wink

Ozanj · 09/01/2022 17:20

I love the entire grey house look - different neutral shades of grey is a classic European look and will never be totally out of style. My advice is to go for what you want and don’t let fashions dictate anything.

Bluebluemoon · 09/01/2022 17:26

Fake panelling
Black bathroom fixtures and shower screens
Crittal style doors in obviously out of context places (hallways of Victorian houses etc)
Macrame stuff
Deep green/ teal
Fake herringbone flooring
Bronze/ gold handles
Dark black/ grey/ navy kitchens
Fake mismatched Victorian tiles all over the floor

This has been all over the interiors magazines/Instagram for a few years already though. I agree it'll filter down to b&q & the range type places etc (it has already)- but interiors style has already moved on for those ahead of the trends.

I think beige, brown, coral, red & green earthy tones are becoming more popular in fashionable circles and things like fringing, luxurious fabrics/curtains (maybe even swags and tails) lots of patterned fabrics, borders, rattan, bronze rather than chrome, ruffles (ie on cushions, lampshades, bedspreads) are what the real trendies are going for right now. It's a bit of a luxe 70's/80's palm beach look going on and also very English/country manor and a focus on having antiques and things with age/meaning instead of going and buying a load of matchy-matchy stuff from wherever.

Mrs Hinch doesn't set trends - whatever she touches turns to shite IMO. As soon as people started asking me if I'd painted my house largely grey (which I'd had on the walls for several years) because I liked Mrs Hinch I got the paintbrushes out (after googling her as I wasn't sure who she was!)

Wheresmywoolyjumpers · 09/01/2022 17:33

Browns and creams.

Just had a look - it’s called Peri, presumably short for Periwinkle.

I did colour analysis for years, and Periwinkle was the only colour other than soft white that suited all complexions; all seasons.

So those using it as a backdrop can expect to look healthy and radiant!

Echobelly · 09/01/2022 17:38

I tried to avoid grey but DH was insistent for our bedroom, so I said yes on condition of colourful curtains, as I told him I thought that grey was basically the new magnolia.

It looks to me like earthy colours are on the way in, though, yes.

Bright blue/dark navy formal rooms seems to be a thing, but maybe on its way out. I was actually going for bright blue in our front room (Edwardian house) before I realised it was a big trend and then DH annoyed me by saying he saw a room nearby that colour and didn't like it, so we went for slightly more 'unexciting' duck-egg sort of blue last year but I'm actually glad we did it now as it's more timeless than a stronger blue which I think will look very 'early 2020s'.

Cattenberg · 09/01/2022 17:52

I’ve been reading a lot of interiors magazines (and a couple of books) lately. I’d never heard of Crittal doors until recently. Now every other household featured says they love them.

Also popular at the moment:

Plaster pink/earthy pink walls with black used as an accent colour
Gallery walls
Cane furniture/wooden wardrobes and cupboards with cane doors
Floating shelves
Shelves and built-in cupboards painted the same colour as the wall
Opalescent glass ornaments
Brightly-coloured tiled floors
Weird, creepy artwork featured distorted human figures
Slogan artwork

I don’t know what will take off in a big way, though. Earthy pink?

SkyLarkDescending · 09/01/2022 17:53

I have just painted our kitchen taupe to go with matte white units and black counters. I think lots of shades of greens are coming back in soon.

My friend who is always ahead of the curve has painted the bottom half of her walls what I can only describe as terracotta Shock. Which is a huge throwback for me. Paired with off white, black accents, plenty of neutral wood and plants

BitterTits · 09/01/2022 17:54

@Bluntness100

That’s what I’ve had for a couple years, animal/bird wallpapers with gold /bronze etc and a lot of green, if it comes into fashion I will need to change..
That would be very wasteful.

1forAll74 · 09/01/2022 18:49

I can't understand, who so many people decided to have the all grey affect in their homes, as it all looks very clinical in the homes everywhere. I am not sure either, why lots of people follow trends, and don't be more individual in their tastes of colours and types of fabrics etc,

Bluntness100 · 09/01/2022 19:08

Excuse me?I'm totally confused, was your previous post a 'joke' certainly not a great one if so!.

Oh, poor you, you think soneone would actually change their decor due to it becoming fashionable?sad times, but no, it was a joke, I’d not change my decor for that 💐

My 5 year old Howdens kitchen is sage green. It's beautiful but I do wish I'd gone for the pale blue one now as it's a bit different. They do have a navy and a pale pink version of their Shaker too but they may date quicker.
jesuistot · 09/01/2022 19:16

I’ve noticed beiges and creams replacing grey as a core decorating colour
