Wow. Ironing Island! Rightmove link

I LOVE this house, love it so much I'm trying to convince DH to view.

However, in my many many years of Rightmoving, I've never ever seen an ironing island. Not sure if it's genius or a bit bonkers! It's clearly a sturdy installation.

Was this a thing in years gone by?

I don't like it at all. Basically you're stuck with an ironing board permanently up in your kitchen. Definitely not for me

Mymapuddlington · 15/10/2021 00:03

That’s gorgeous but who wants an ironing board on display constantly however fancy?!

SpangoDweller · 15/10/2021 00:03

Love the bookcase nook and above-average number of chaise-longues. I don’t iron so I’d need to convert the island into a sherry plinth or something Grin

I have a rocking horse toy exactly like one of the ones in pic 5. It was a childhood gift and is still in my mum’s guest room.

rrhuth · 15/10/2021 00:04

Yeah, weird - I spend around eight minutes per year ironing so that feels like overkill to me.

nocoolnamesleft · 15/10/2021 00:05

Do you mean the dedicated cat perch?

goldpendant · 15/10/2021 00:06

It's totally mad eh? The house is a beaut, I have just never seen one of these ever! And I look at a lot of houses!

Wondering if this was commonplace or a trend pre 'island'?!

Well... I could happily live there.

Sherry plinth 😂
Mymapuddlington · 15/10/2021 00:08

Maybe it’s for the servant whose only job was to stand there and iron 🤔

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 15/10/2021 00:12

Does it actually say in the details it's an ironing island ? To me it just looks like a bit of an unusual islandConfused

ChristieMalry · 15/10/2021 00:13

I think I would like these people.

Not because I like ironing, but because of their dedication to literally nailing down something they require. And because of their hats.

It's a gorgeous house too.

thefirstmrsrochester · 15/10/2021 00:15

an usual island structure creates a central feature in the kitchen

That’s some estate agent up sell for you 😂

Aquamarine1029 · 15/10/2021 00:16

How much ironing do you do to have this installed in your kitchen? My mind is boggled.

ChristieMalry · 15/10/2021 00:17

YY they can't quite commit to even saying "unusual" lol.

It actually says 'usual island' in the descriptionConfused
ChristieMalry · 15/10/2021 00:19

Actually y'know it's Wiltshire and they've got stag horns everywhere. That probably isn't an ironing station. It's probably an altar.

Strangevipers · 15/10/2021 00:20

If this is truly for ironing this is the saddest thing I've ever seen.

toomuchlaundry · 15/10/2021 00:24

I’m sure I would spend my time walking into it I’m so clumsy!

chatw0o0 · 15/10/2021 00:25

That's a beautiful kitchen but Shock at the ironing island. I think I'd end up using it as somewhere to chop vegetables etc. Definitely wouldn't be ironing there!

Described in the listing as "an usual island structure creates a central feature in the kitchen".

ChristieMalry · 15/10/2021 00:26

Don't be fooled that their lives are empty because of their ironing island. I tell ya I'm getting midsommar vibes from these guys now. Rosemary's baby, the lot.

ThreeGoingCrazy · 15/10/2021 00:31

It's a fancy chopping board.

ChristieMalry · 15/10/2021 00:32

chopping board altar

chesirecat99 · 15/10/2021 00:36

I think it is a vintage industrial ironing board (possibly from when the house would have had a housekeeper/maid) repurposed as an island. I suspect it is more likely the current owners use it as a sherry plinth like @SpangoDweller, or something along those lines, rather than as an ironing board.

KloppsTeeth · 15/10/2021 00:51

🤣 at sherry plinth!

MrsEricBana · 15/10/2021 00:52

Ok, I was all ready to come up with a plausible explanation for this but, nope, that is bloody weird and ruins an otherwise very nice kitchen. What a gorgeous house though.
