Wow. Ironing Island! Rightmove link

I LOVE this house, love it so much I'm trying to convince DH to view.

However, in my many many years of Rightmoving, I've never ever seen an ironing island. Not sure if it's genius or a bit bonkers! It's clearly a sturdy installation.

Was this a thing in years gone by?

It's a lovely house, regardless of ironing island!

MumOfTwoChildren · 15/10/2021 00:58

I think it looks horrible and I know for certain I would walk into it way too often.

Bontanics · 15/10/2021 00:59

It's even made it unto the diagram on the floor plan

StaplesCorner · 15/10/2021 01:19

I'm going with walk into it all the time as well, and I bet anything you put on it gets knocked over instantly. And is that the only kitchen? Stupid money and thats it? And there's a health and safety hazard in the middle of it? Fucking liberty.

StaplesCorner · 15/10/2021 01:22

You'd walk into it if you'd survived getting in and out of the bath on its deck of death.

I feel all these hazards are in some way directly connected to the amount of velvet in the house too. And it looks haunted. Bit corridory.

Redsquirrel5 · 15/10/2021 01:43

🤣Maybe it is a Gin Fin!😂

RainbowMum11 · 15/10/2021 02:10

If I had £1.25m to spend on a house, I really wouldn't want an ironing board in the kitchen, ever!
My Gran used to clear the breakfast bar work surface though and put a load of sheets down to do her ironing on there, that'a as close as I'd get!!

TillyDevon · 15/10/2021 02:23

I love that house - we’ve lived on that same road and it can be hard to sell a house on it , but I haven’t seen how far off the road this one is. I must have passed it often! I love its character.

WeAreTheHeroes · 15/10/2021 02:38

I'm wondering if it's a vault horse originally used to help one enter the raised deathtrap bath that they've re-purposed?

Derbee · 15/10/2021 02:38

If there was a massive utility room, I could be convinced that it’s a clever idea. But in the middle of the kitchen? Nope. Weird

Luckingfovely · 15/10/2021 03:17

Apparently it's a Thing!

SpangoDweller · 15/10/2021 06:54

Definitely needs to be a sherry plinth or gin fin. Chuck a floor-length tablecloth on it, tray of glasses, decanter, maybe a bowl of nibbles. Change up the offering seasonally or for special occasions.

RedRiverShore · 15/10/2021 06:57

Very old fashioned, most people don't iron nowadays

Bagelsandbrie · 15/10/2021 06:57

@nocoolnamesleft

Do you mean the dedicated cat perch?
Grin
GenevieveLenard · 15/10/2021 07:49

Wtf is that? And why have they put it in the busiest bit of the kitchen??

thisplaceisweird · 15/10/2021 07:53

@chesirecat99

I think it is a vintage industrial ironing board (possibly from when the house would have had a housekeeper/maid) repurposed as an island. I suspect it is more likely the current owners use it as a sherry plinth like *@SpangoDweller*, or something along those lines, rather than as an ironing board.
Exactly what I thought

This. I wouldn't mind it if l had a big utility room but it's very strange in the kitchen. I would remove it immediately. I love the garden though.
therespectablecardigan · 15/10/2021 08:06

It's very close to the range which gives me the impression that they use one of those range heated irons. It would be a no from me, I can already feel the bruises I would get from constantly walking into the sharp edges.
Going against the grain, I don't think the house is fab at all. It's all very meh.

Lalallama · 15/10/2021 08:15

If we lived there the ironing board would end up being the 'takeaway flyers and random tat from the kids pockets' stand.

And I would spend half my life nagging everyone to hide their grubby old hats in a drawer and only display the never worn fabulous ones.

RedRiverShore · 15/10/2021 08:24

I would have to be removed and something else put over the space like a mat, or change the floor, very annoying.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 15/10/2021 08:31

I just cannot for the life of me imagine that anyone ever thought that would be a good idea. And what would it be like to be the one half of a couple who thought it was bonkers but got worn down and had to live with it forever more?

I agree OP - I browse on house selling sites a lot and this is one of the most terrible "features" I've ever seen.

KatherineofGaunt · 15/10/2021 08:36

I wouldn't be walking into it, but I can see myself being frustrated that it doesn't quite fit the plates I want to lay out for serving up, or DS keeps trying to climb it and knocks things off. It's definitely a surface where I'd put the olive oil down and then turn around a moment later and send it flying.

BubblingBottle · 15/10/2021 08:36

Love the house but the ironing island is weird.... Fine if it was in a big utility room but it's not. Who would want to iron next to a baking hot Aga or meat splattering cooking and the clothes would then smell Confused

MorrisZapp · 15/10/2021 08:37

It's very clearly a home counties homage to the Starship Enterprise.

Live long and vespers 😇
