Wow. Ironing Island! Rightmove link

I LOVE this house, love it so much I'm trying to convince DH to view.

However, in my many many years of Rightmoving, I've never ever seen an ironing island. Not sure if it's genius or a bit bonkers! It's clearly a sturdy installation.

Was this a thing in years gone by?

Please could you view it @goldpendant if only to ask the vendors WTF it is.

LindaEllen · 15/10/2021 10:43

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor

Does it actually say in the details it's an ironing island ? To me it just looks like a bit of an unusual islandConfused
Yeah, an unusual island in the shape of an ironing board, including the metal bit to rest your iron on ...
hotmeatymilk · 15/10/2021 10:44

Honestly that’s. Lovely house but that iron board would put me right off. It screams a woman’s place is in the kitchen getting the ironing done. Not for me.
What a peculiar interpretation that says more about your viewpoint of women, ironing and kitchens than the house does. Nothing about an ironing board in a kitchen is female. Unless I missed a sign on this one that said “women only”?

Ellmau · 15/10/2021 10:48

It's a lovely house. Really lovely. If only I had 1.25 million spare...

Pity they can't spell the location properly - it's the Wylye (pronounced Wily) Valley, not Wyle.

SpeckledlyHen · 15/10/2021 10:48

I am looking for a new house in that area for a similar budget.. I love it! However, as part of the sale I would ask for it to be removed and the floor made good (or knock off the price of doing it). It is AWFUL.. It "might" be ok as a pull down option in a utility room, but slap bang in the middle of that lovely kitchen is just criminal in my opinion..

summersolstice43 · 15/10/2021 10:52
@summersolstice43 not sure if you're being sarcastic or not but when this ironing board was used as such and not as little serving island, the iron(s) would have been heated on the Aga. You would have had two (at least) so you could use one and heat one at all times. Plus probably a few differently shaped ones for frills and collars and pocket corners.
No not being sarcastic at all. Surely over the past 40+ years since irons have been electric this cant have just stood there? You'd think someone would have either removed it or fitted a socket so it could be used.

ToffeeNotCoffee · 15/10/2021 10:53

What a beautiful house.

The 'ironing island' is just a work bench thing. It's not an ironing board. It's someone's idea of fun !

CatherineCawood · 15/10/2021 11:04

Never mind the ironing island, what the heck is this in the ensuite?

Wow. Ironing Island! Rightmove link
BubblingBottle · 15/10/2021 11:08

@CatherineCawood. A mobile shade?

autumnalvibes · 15/10/2021 11:09

Gorgeous house but I would be looking to get rid of that! I don't even iron though unless for a very special occasion so wouldn't be worth the space!

WeAreTheHeroes · 15/10/2021 11:18

Looks like a standard lamp.

sendaisnow · 15/10/2021 11:25

It's not for ironing through. It's an old vintage board repurposed as a kitchen island. Hideous.

vajingleberry · 15/10/2021 11:27

@Wroxie

Based on the artwork, the red walls, and the clitoris lamps, the owner of this house is obviously some kind of feminist femme fatale sexy sex person and the ironing board island is ironic and used to serve oysters and champagne when her lovers are visiting.
Nah, it's a sex table Grin
Rookie93 · 15/10/2021 11:32

@CatherineCawood Think it's an antique fire screen of some kind - to prevent the heat from the open fire redenning or making blotchy a ladies fine complexion.

CatherineCawood · 15/10/2021 11:33

It (the weird bathroom thing) looks flat though, not like a standard lamp unless is it a flat light shade that has the blub directly behind it? Can't see a cable or electrical lead coming from the base though.

Aha! That would make sense! Thanks 😊

idontlikealdi · 15/10/2021 11:34

Isn't it left over from when they would the actual iron irons on the aga to do the ironing? I like it would make a good work surface.

I don't even own an iron.

antsinyourpanta · 15/10/2021 11:36

I think it's fairly obvious that at some point the owner has been on their arse financially and wisely adopted the Mumsnet recommendation of "taking in ironing" to make ends meet, and have made their millions.

🤣🤣🤣
There is still a lot they could sell on ebay as well if needed.

trumpisagit · 15/10/2021 11:36

@CatherineCawood yes, what it it?
Not a lamp it is flat, and also in a bathroom.

wildthingsinthenight · 15/10/2021 11:39

I could put up with the island to live there. It's gorgeous.

I think the think in the en suite is to hang your clothes on. Your outfit for the morning?

BiddyPop · 15/10/2021 11:49

I am thinking about stealing the idea for my (probably pie in the sky) plans for a craft room - having a permanent ironing station would be really useful for sewing!! The only problem is that DD needs to move out permanently, and accept that her room becomes a craft room and she can use the spare bedroom when she comes back.....and persuading DH that this is the best use of the room....

Ariela · 15/10/2021 12:21

It's actually a good idea, there's not enough room for a full sized island/work surface, but there is a hot plate place to pop hot pans and room to put your plates you're dishing up to.
Quite like it.

My minute kitchen has a tiny built in cupboard for things like brooms and buckets, when the door is open you pull the ironing board down from it's place on the door, it's attached by a hinge to the door, and swing the legs out to support it. There's a socket in the cupboard so plug in the iron and away you go....
This is in my dreams still!

parietal · 15/10/2021 13:30

but what is the black & gold thing on the purple chaise longue in pic 14?

StormzyinaTCup · 15/10/2021 21:12

@StaplesCorner

You'd walk into it if you'd survived getting in and out of the bath on its deck of death.

I feel all these hazards are in some way directly connected to the amount of velvet in the house too. And it looks haunted. Bit corridory.

'deck of death' and 'hazards having a direct connection to amount velvet' made me proper 🤣
Rainbowshit · 15/10/2021 21:20

Absolutely stunning house. -
Apart from the weird ironing thing. ETF is that about?!
