Wow. Ironing Island! Rightmove link

I LOVE this house, love it so much I'm trying to convince DH to view.

However, in my many many years of Rightmoving, I've never ever seen an ironing island. Not sure if it's genius or a bit bonkers! It's clearly a sturdy installation.

Was this a thing in years gone by?

That's your takeaway from all this, OP? The ironing island? Grin
God no. I will not have my house telling me what to do.
I'd tear it out and toss it straight into the wood-burning stove... in the room where the Tamara de Lempicka is hanging. Wink

Hdhdjejdj · 15/10/2021 09:50

Love the house but I hate ironing so that would bother me and the wood burning stove is far too small for the room.

APerfectSky · 15/10/2021 09:51

I think it's fairly obvious that at some point the owner has been on their arse financially and wisely adopted the Mumsnet recommendation of "taking in ironing" to make ends meet, and have made their millions.

hapagirl · 15/10/2021 09:51

Beautiful house and I love ironing! I know, I'm a weirdo. But I'm still not into a fixed ironing board.

Thewiseoneincognito · 15/10/2021 09:53

I love it.

Never seen that before but it makes sense as they’d have to heat the iron on the oven. I’d want a maid if I owned that house just so she could use that to do the ironing on. I’d let her use an electric iron though. 😂

LizzieSiddal · 15/10/2021 09:56

It’s right on the A36, it’s a horribly busy road. The house is beautiful though but I’d be ripping out that ironing island.

Peanutsandchilli · 15/10/2021 09:57

Looks more like something off the back of a ship than an ironing board, to me. There's no way they iron in the middle of the kitchen. Exceptionally weird to have it as a table though.

Rest of the house is stunning.

It made me think of something you see in a mortuary on tv crime dramas.

Would it even fit? Smallest wood stove I've seen outside of a doll's house! Grin

I think this is just an antique bit of kit that's been kept for the "look" and it will just be used as a small serving or prep island. It's useless for actual ironing without some padding on it, which it will have had when it was in use. Probably an old, repurposed cotton quilt cut down with a drawstring around the edge to hold it in place.

Maybe it is a doll's house!
My thinking is, if there's a totally random and weird ironing island, there must be a chainsaw in its own special case next to the Aga. It's that kind of dollhouse... anything goes!

Idontlike · 15/10/2021 10:13

if you'd survived getting in and out of the bath on its deck of death

Oh yes! My ankle bone actually hurt just looking at that.

TheVanguardSix · 15/10/2021 10:14

MattDamon God I'm just looking again... that REALLY is a tiny stove, isn't it??? Grin
You'd think, with a house like this, they'd have all the bells and whistles going. I mean, if you're going to do 'ironing love island', get a feck-off woodburning stove, right?

earthyfire · 15/10/2021 10:16

First thing I'd remove after moving in

Luckingfovely · 15/10/2021 10:17

The more you look at this house, the weirder it gets! In @MattDamon photo - are there two religious icons hanging on the mantlepiece above the toy stove?

And on the hearth, what are the clearly haunted half-human-half-something-else creatures??

summersolstice43 · 15/10/2021 10:20

The house is lovely, BUT where on earth do you plug the iron in? I cant see a socket anywhere

crumpet · 15/10/2021 10:22

It’s just being used as a fancy butchers block. I think it’s quite fun, but not sure I’d want one.

Luckingfovely · 15/10/2021 10:23

Also delighted by the multi-coloured Clitoris Lampshades in the bedrooms!

I love "sherry plinth" Grin

A friend's FIL used to refer to the awning of their tent as the "aperitif flap".

trumpisagit · 15/10/2021 10:27

Good point re plugging in the iron. Surely there's a socket under the board?
It would be a slightly weird breakfast bar (and also cat perch) in our house. No ironing done round here.

Wroxie · 15/10/2021 10:28

@summersolstice43 not sure if you're being sarcastic or not but when this ironing board was used as such and not as little serving island, the iron(s) would have been heated on the Aga. You would have had two (at least) so you could use one and heat one at all times. Plus probably a few differently shaped ones for frills and collars and pocket corners.

Wroxie · 15/10/2021 10:29

FFS no one is actually doing any ironing on this, it's been repurposed as a small island. Like people who put dried flowers in old hot-water bottles or plant pansies in a bedpan.

SpiderinaWingMirror · 15/10/2021 10:30

God I adore that house.
I never iron but would use it as a feck off cheeseboard for the gatherings I would have to show off my house!

Wroxie · 15/10/2021 10:36

Based on the artwork, the red walls, and the clitoris lamps, the owner of this house is obviously some kind of feminist femme fatale sexy sex person and the ironing board island is ironic and used to serve oysters and champagne when her lovers are visiting.

user1493494961 · 15/10/2021 10:39

It looks like a coffin lid.
