People who have a utility room and a dishwasher

Where is your dishwasher? Is it in the kitchen or the utility?

I was merrily planning to put it in the (as yet unbuilt) utility room, which will be off the kitchen, but it struck me that this maybe isn’t the best idea.

Is it better to keep it in the kitchen, close to the sink and wherever it’ll be stored? We have enough battles of wits about emptying it, to have it in a separate room may make that even worse 🤔

Absolutely should be in the kitchen, close enough to the sink.

FiveShelties · 10/09/2021 09:49

I would definitely have it in the kitchen, it would drive me mad walking backwards and forwards to fill and empty it. My husband would be odds on to drop a dirty dish/plate if he had to carry them through to the utility.

misskatamari · 10/09/2021 09:49

I would definitely go kitchen! It would be a massive pain trundling backwards and forwards with stuff and I reckon would inevitably lead to stuff piling up in the kitchen, which would then need shifting, or I'd spend time washing it up because o couldn't be arsed with the arduous task of walking to the dishwasher 🤣

justabigdisco · 10/09/2021 09:49

In the kitchen, 100%

Babdoc · 10/09/2021 09:50

If it’s not in the kitchen, OP, you will have to trudge back and forth with every plate, mug and spoon, to load and unload it. It will take twice as long as having it in the kitchen, where you can load/unload directly.

burritofan · 10/09/2021 09:50

I’ve only ever heard of dishwashers in the kitchen! If I had a giant house I might put a second one in the utility for overflow on big occasions like Christmas, but that’s “fantasy Rightmove remodelling” levels of planning.

anntonia · 10/09/2021 09:50

Ours used to be in the utility room but we moved it into the kitchen and sacrificed a cupboard. I found it a pain to carry things back and forth.

It depends on how much space you have. In our case we got a nice big cupboard to replace the gap left in the utility room. In this we put kitchen items that are bulky but necessary, but not in daily use. You could have proper fitted cupboards made if you’re doing a big reno. Smile

Owlshouse · 10/09/2021 09:51

We have a utility room washer and dryer in there but dishwasher in my experience is best in the kitchen under the sink, I add to it as I cook so the benches are not cluttered and it would be more hassle to be popping in and out of the utility room when loading and then being back and forwards when unloading into the cupboards once all clean.

SprayedWithDettol · 10/09/2021 09:51

One in each. The old dishwasher was still working well when we had our kitchen remodelled, so off it went to the utility. It is brilliant when we have large parties.

CottonSock · 10/09/2021 09:53

I think I've heard on MN its possible to have both. Perhaps the staff loaf the other one out of sight.
Seriously though 100% the kitchen

Popetthetreehugger · 10/09/2021 09:53

We have a utility room with washing machine tumble dryer and loo , dishwasher next to sink in kitchen. Wouldn’t want faf of carting every cup threw , also unloading wouldn’t be as easy … but would bump up yr Fitbit steps 🤣

clarepetal · 10/09/2021 09:54

I'd have it in the kitchen.

Utility room. I'm so jealous, I really want one. You've made it!

HotPregnantLady · 10/09/2021 09:55

Be a right faff carrying the contents back and fourth. You want the dishwasher near the sink and bin so you can scrape and rinse plates etc then put them in.

junebirthdaygirl · 10/09/2021 09:56

In the kitchen and diagonally across from cupboard and drawers where everything goes. The least movement the better especially if you ever expect your teens to empty it!

MandyMotherOfBrian · 10/09/2021 09:56

In the utility, with all the other white goods. Also it’s a big open plan kitchen and the cupboards, where the crockery goes, are closer to the utility room than they are to the sink, so if it was near the sink it would probably be more annoying when unloading.

pickingdaisies · 10/09/2021 09:57

Kitchen! Rest of family have a hard enough job finding it when it's right next to them. If it was in another room entirely, it might as well not exist.

Underbox · 10/09/2021 09:58

Kitchen 100%. You don't want to be lugging everything back and forth from a utility room. What a faff.

proudwomansexmatters · 10/09/2021 09:58

It's in the kitchen next to the sink. We have a dining kitchen so once we've eaten all of the plates are moved to the sink and into the dishwasher. The cupboard where the clean plates live is above the dishwasher so straight out and into the cupboard!

Don't put the dishwasher in a seperate room!

Our utility has the washing machine, tumble dryer, large sink and wall racks for hanging clothes. Very much a wash room!

Ginisatonic · 10/09/2021 10:00

It depends. We have ours in the utility room and it works for us. We put it there because when we moved in to our house there wasn’t room for one in the kitchen. When we had our kitchen redone we kept it in the utility. But the utility room is very small and is right next to the kitchen.

KhoshkaKatya · 10/09/2021 10:00

In the kitchen, close to the sink and under top cupboards where you store the crockery and glasses.

idontlikealdi · 10/09/2021 10:00

Kitchen!

JudgeRindersMinder · 10/09/2021 10:01

Thank you!! You’ve all confirmed what I was thinking…I had been thinking “yeah all appliances in the utility”, then started thinking a bit more deeply about it and thought everything that everyone’s said!

Kitchen, as near the sink as possible, and close to the cupboards where you store clean plates etc

Wombat96 · 10/09/2021 10:04

I have both. One in the garage as that was the only space to put one when we moved in. Top priority to have one, got a used one off FB for £30. Then had one put in next to sink when the kitchen was done, 7 years later. Weirdly, we still use the one in the garage, out of habit & because we stack the dirty plates in a big Lakeland bus tub. It is useful to have two on the rare occasions we have people visiting. It is a complete faff trekking back & fore, so if you have to choose, put it in the kitchen.

SylvanasWindrunner · 10/09/2021 10:05

Kitchen. Beside sink and near all the cupboards where the stuff lives. Utility has big freezer, washing machine and tumble dryer. Minimising the travel time and going back and forth when loading and putting away is paramount I think. Before we built our utility, the washing machine and tumble drier were in separate rooms and it was a royal pain in the arse.
