People who have a utility room and a dishwasher

Where is your dishwasher? Is it in the kitchen or the utility?

I was merrily planning to put it in the (as yet unbuilt) utility room, which will be off the kitchen, but it struck me that this maybe isn’t the best idea.

Is it better to keep it in the kitchen, close to the sink and wherever it’ll be stored? We have enough battles of wits about emptying it, to have it in a separate room may make that even worse 🤔

Kitchen, definitely, but we’ve regretted not putting our old slimline one in the utility as extra help.

Kitchen. Beside sink and near all the cupboards where the stuff lives. Utility has big freezer, washing machine and tumble dryer. Minimising the travel time and going back and forth when loading and putting away is paramount I think. Before we built our utility, the washing machine and tumble drier were in separate rooms and it was a royal pain in the arse.
Our dryer’s in the garage just now and it’s an absolute pain in the backside! I know it’s very much a 1st world problem, but we’re doing a full house renovation and I want to get it as right as I possible can

Yes, that's where our dryer was too! We didn't have an internal door either so we had to go outside and back to dry stuff. Now they are side by side, it's amazing! You want it as well so that the doors open in different directions so you can just transfer between washing machine and dryer without a door in the way Grin Saves a lot of faffing.

Why on earth wouldn't it be in the kitchen?

thelastgoldeneagle · 10/09/2021 10:19

Kitchen! Magic triangle of sink, cooker, dishwasher. As close to sink as possible.

cornflakegirl · 10/09/2021 10:21

Ours is in the utility. The teens are responsible for unloading it, which means that quite often there is washing up piling up above it because they haven't unloaded yet. I like that I don't have to look at this mess constantly, or have it take up kitchen prep space.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 10/09/2021 10:26

Our utility room is out the back door and down the other end of the house - that would be quite a pain with piles of dishes Grin Definitely in the kitchen, beside the sink. And store the dishes as close to it as you can.

ColinKnocksTwoPence · 10/09/2021 10:36

Dishwasher in the kitchen next to the sink, washing machine and dryer in the utility room.
However, our dishwasher is also under the cupboards that store the glasses and crockery and it's not as handy as you may think.
When the machine door is open for unloading - with rack pulled out etc- I can't actually reach the cupboards above it any more. So everything has to be piled onto the work surface and then put away after the the machine has been emptied and door closed.

Definitely in the kitchen. I think of the kitchen as food related stuff and the utility as laundry related stuff.

namechange30455 · 10/09/2021 10:42

Ours is in the utility (like that when we moved) and it drives me mental!

minipie · 10/09/2021 10:45

Kitchen!!

Utility has laundry machines and second freezer. I wouldn’t want any of the other main kitchen appliances in there - even though my utility is right next to my kitchen.

RonniePickering · 10/09/2021 10:46

Kitchen here.

Luckyelephant1 · 10/09/2021 10:51

Definitely kitchen. I would use utility for laundry machines, big freezer, and lots of cupboards for storage of kitchen things not used daily eg waffle makers, food processor etc. How annoying would it be to unload and load dishwasher if it's in another room! Imagine rinsing dirty dishes then having to walk to another room to put them in the dishwasher. Water everywhere and lots of accidents I imagine.

Hydrate · 10/09/2021 10:52

Ours is in the kitchen in an island with the sink. The washer & dryer are in the basement. I would like to have a utilityroom off the kitchen though, that would be so handy.

Cerebelle · 10/09/2021 10:54

I have it in the utility but it's only about four steps from the sink. It's fine.

ADreadedSunnyDay · 10/09/2021 10:59

Kitchen. Utility room is for washer, dryer, another freezer, belfast sink. Small toilet off utility room

Clymene · 10/09/2021 11:01

Kitchen. Next to the sink.

Utility room is for laundry and cleaning stuff.

RitaFires · 10/09/2021 11:07

Kitchen definitely, my dishwasher is next to the cutlery drawer and the cupboards that everything needs to go into. I'm sure people who have it in the utility have systems that work for them but I prefer to keep it as simple as possible.

Twinkie01 · 10/09/2021 11:08

Kitchen as that's where you'll need to unload all the stuff in the dishwasher to. You'll spend your life bringing everything from the utility to the kitchen and vice versus otherwise.

ineedaholidayandwine · 10/09/2021 11:09

Kitchen, our last house it was in the utility room and was a faff taking everything through, this house it's to the side of the sink, so much easier

OneEpisode · 10/09/2021 11:13

We are lucky enough to have a lovely large utility, with an actual door, but the dishwasher is in the kitchen where it is needed. We are open plan fo the eating area (no separate dining room) so a quiet dishwasher was useful.

PosiePerkinPootleFlump · 10/09/2021 11:13

I once stayed in a holiday property with the dishwasher in a utility room off the kitchen. Drove me nuts and swore at the stupidity of it every single time I unloaded the bloody thing. Needs to be near where cutlery, plates, glasses, mugs and pans are stored, as well as near the sink

wheresmymojo · 10/09/2021 11:22

Kitchen

Next to the sink as then there's already water pipes in that area and anything that needs to be poured down the sink or rinsed is easy to do it and then pop in the dishwasher.

wheresmymojo · 10/09/2021 11:24

We rented a place with all appliances, including the fridge and dishwasher in the utility.

It was beyond painful...

Tramping back and forth between the two the whole time (the fridge being in there was even more painful than the dishwasher)...
