People who have a utility room and a dishwasher

Where is your dishwasher? Is it in the kitchen or the utility?

I was merrily planning to put it in the (as yet unbuilt) utility room, which will be off the kitchen, but it struck me that this maybe isn’t the best idea.

Is it better to keep it in the kitchen, close to the sink and wherever it’ll be stored? We have enough battles of wits about emptying it, to have it in a separate room may make that even worse 🤔

Our dishwasher is in the kitchen - never thought of putting it in the utility, too much trekking dishes backwards and forwards.

What problems we do have in the UK...

Lockdownbear · 10/09/2021 11:32

Definitely kitchen, I want to re model our kitchen to make it closer to the table.
If I was starting from scratch I would be tempted to put washing machine and dryer upstairs.

Froppysue · 10/09/2021 11:32

Mines in the kitchen next to the sink. The connectors for it were already there (new build) with a wee switch that says dishwasher.

I think it would be really annoying taking the dishes out in the utility room and carting them through the to kitchen to put away.

Soontobe60 · 10/09/2021 11:33

Why does the dishwasher have to be near the sink?

Soontobe60 · 10/09/2021 11:33

Apart from the plumbing convenience?

Lockdownbear · 10/09/2021 11:35

@Soontobe60

Why does the dishwasher have to be near the sink?
Just so you can empty out cups, and breakfast bowls etc before putting them in the dishwasher.
GracieLouFreebushh · 10/09/2021 11:35

In the kitchen by the sink

Why does the dishwasher have to be near the sink?
So you can rinse things that need it before putting them in.
Boombadoom · 10/09/2021 11:47

Kitchen.

Washing machine, tumble drier and freezer are in the utility.

RobinPenguins · 10/09/2021 12:27

Mine’s not by the sink, I don’t pre-rinse. It’s next to the bin, for scraping any food waste off.

It’s also near to (but not directly underneath) the cupboards where plates, cups, glasses are stored.

I am amazed by the responses! We "only" have one dishwasher and it is in the utility, which is soooo much better than the kitchen because you can shut the door and not have to hear it. That said, our kitchen and living room are open plan so that's why I think the noise is an issue.

I do agree it's good to have it next to a sink for pre-soaking. Also, I suppose it depends on what else you have in the utility - lots of people have talked about washing machines etc. but we have a separate laundry room for those.

My Bosch as pretty much silent. The newer ones generally are In any event I put it on as I lock up for night Then unload first thing in morning So even if it was noisy, I wouldn’t hear it
bananapumpkin · 10/09/2021 13:19

@Marni83 that's something to look forward to, then! Ours is 14 years old but I won't replace it until it stops working.

Do you only ever run it once a day? I often put ours on two or three times if I'm doing a lot of cooking. Especially when entertaining, which is when I particularly don't want the noise!

Chasingsquirrels · 10/09/2021 13:22

Kitchen.
Below the wall cupboards in which the plates etc are stored and next to the drawers that utensils go in (about which is the draining board).
Emptying is very quick as you barely have to move.

ForsythiaInBloom · 10/09/2021 13:29

Definitely in the kitchen! My dishwasher is practically silent and in the kitchen, next to the sink. As someone said up thread, a spare dishwasher in the utility is the ultimate for Christmas or entertaining but is fantasy RightMove stuff.

We have an upstairs utility room though, so you’d be trudging upstairs with all the dirty dishes Grin. It very much suits us. No trudging laundry miles downstairs. It’s a period terrace with 4 floors and a first floor lounge - lots of stairs. It has a washing machine, tumble drier, sink, drying racks, spare fridge freezer, wine racks and coffee machine but no dishwasher.

TheDogsMother · 10/09/2021 15:04

Kitchen 100%. As close to the sink as possible and next to drawers where you keep plates. Before we refurbished we had the dishwasher in the utility and it was a real pain. Utility now has washing machine (which is noisier) and freezer along with storage, wall cupboards. Hi

JudgeRindersMinder · 10/09/2021 15:18

Ours is Bosch too and almost silent. It’s only a couple of years old so now I have to decide whether to go integrated….oh the problems… Grin

I’m a single parent of two children
Only eat breakfast and dinner here
And I’m absolutely not someone to use every utensil going to cook

honeybuns007 · 11/09/2021 15:30

Why not go all out and put it in the bathroom or guest bedroom 😂 seriously though, kitchen. Never anywhere but kitchen. It replaces washing in the sink. So put it near the sink so you rinse bits in sink and pop into dishwasher

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 11/09/2021 15:32

Needs to be in the kitchen right by the sink.

fitflopqueen · 11/09/2021 15:35

Dishwasher in the kitchen, next to sink, everyday crockery is stored in wall cupboard over it. Goes on last thing at night, is pretty quiet - beware we had to get a replacement about 3 months ago and couldn't get a Bosch semi integrated for love nor money, 6 month wait. So have a Hotpoint and so far so good.

Microwave does live in the utility as used much less.

Mummyoply · 11/09/2021 15:36

We have our (silent) dishwasher integrated into the kitchen. Washing machine and tumbler dryer which are noisier are in the Utility

RandomMess · 11/09/2021 15:42

Have 2 dishwashers in the kitchen instead of a crockery cupboard. After all dishwashers are crockery cupboards that wash themselves.

You don't unload the clean one just take stuff out as you use it, perhaps the odd thing still in there when the other one is full up of dirty stuff.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 11/09/2021 16:03

Definitely under the kitchen sink so you can hose the dishes off before you stack them.

drpaddington · 11/09/2021 16:03

Ours is in the kitchen- with the sink on one side and the crockery cupboard on the other side. It annoys me a bit that the cupboard for mugs/ glasses isn't directly above it (there's a window there so wasn't an option) so we have to carry them. Don't mind carrying the cutlery across to the drawers though as it's all in the little caddy.
