People who have a utility room and a dishwasher

Where is your dishwasher? Is it in the kitchen or the utility?

I was merrily planning to put it in the (as yet unbuilt) utility room, which will be off the kitchen, but it struck me that this maybe isn’t the best idea.

Is it better to keep it in the kitchen, close to the sink and wherever it’ll be stored? We have enough battles of wits about emptying it, to have it in a separate room may make that even worse 🤔

My dishwasher is in the kitchen, under the island.
Utility room has tumble dryer and washing machine.

bananapumpkin · 17/09/2021 15:17

Is there literally no pattern?

Always roughly same amount of plates, mugs etc
Unless we have guests
Then I run it twice

Doesn’t the utility room pong a bit with huge pile of dirty stuff in there all day?

Depending on the meals, we might have one frying pan or five saucepans. Depending on the weather and activities, we might have more mugs or more glasses (which don't fit in the same space in the dishwasher).

We scrape or rinse any food residue beforehand so it really doesn't smell.

Going to be difficult then for a poster who doesn’t know you to tell you how to stack your dishwasher then!

But I really struggle how there isn’t set places for things in your dishwasher

Surely dinner plates and cutlery and mugs and glasses etc can ONLY go in specific places?

HunkyPunk · 17/09/2021 15:26

Definitely in the kitchen, where you can take things out of the dishwasher and put them straight into cupboards, cutlery drawers etc. without carting them around.

Yes, it was a bit of an unreasonable request! Just jealous/impressed by your efficiency Grin

Cutlery can only go in the basket and wine glasses only fit in one part, but otherwise it's pretty much a free-for-all.

Dinner plates will only fit in bottom rack. In the plate slots. Glasses and mugs only on top rack.

I’m really baffled about your dish washer issues! Grin

bananapumpkin · 17/09/2021 16:34

It's the bowls! They don't actually fit in any of the slots but they can go anywhere. And saucepans. And then all the random stuff like plastic storage boxes and potato mashers and slotted spoons and AAAAAAAAHHH

I'm going for a lie down!

Sarahlou63 · 17/09/2021 16:44

Mine's in the walk in pantry off the kitchen - didn't want to sacrifice any units. Washing machine and freezers are in the utility.

Bowls are a bugger I’ll give you that!!

Kitchen

Utility room is perfect for laundry, but would be a nightmare for dishes.

I once lived in an old house where the refrigerator was in a little annex off the kitchen. That was bad enough.

JudgeRindersMinder · 17/09/2021 18:23

@Ariela

If you struggle will filling/emptying, consider 2 to use as cupboards effectively. So you fill one with dirty washing up and then put it on, meanwhile you've been emptying the other of clean washing up. And repeat.
Now this is something I’ve been pondering since a family friend did it year ago! I’m just not sure I could make it work properly. It would be great as far as dinner sets etc to, but what happens when you have pots/pans/awkward stuff too, how does that work?

@OneEpisode

I would like to line dry when possible, so having the washing machine nearer the back door is useful, for carrying the wet washing out. The dry washing is lighter on the way back inside.
I’m with you on that, although I have a dryer I definitely use the line more

In the kitchen as near as possible to where you put the stuff away. If you have an island put in in the side away from the tv so noise goes the other way IYSWIM

FlipFlops4Me · 17/09/2021 18:44

In the kitchen, beside the sink and with a counter fitted over it. (About an inch gap so that it can be taken out at need). Makes life really easy - scrape plate into food scrap bin, pop plate in dishwasher. Luckily it's not a dishwasher that needs me to rinse etc before shoving everything in there.

Ariela · 17/09/2021 18:51

@JudgeRindersMinder

I asked: It just sort of works out on the basis you don't use the same awkward pots and pans 2/3 days running. So by then you've filled one machine fully and put it on, and when you open the 'clean' anything you're not so likely to use 'from the dishwasher' gets put in the appropriate cupboard till you need it again.

Frankly I'd do the same but my kitchen is too small!

RedElephants · 17/09/2021 18:57

Utility room has the back door, an adjoining/separate downstairs loo, washing machine, tumble dryer, fridge and freezer on top.
Dishwasher is 'under' the sink in the kitchen.

Dishwasher is in the kitchen. The majority of items we use are kept with in five paces of the dishwasher.

DJSteves · 17/09/2021 20:08

We are in the middle of a kitchen extension and have put our new dishwasher next to the sink. Washer and dryer are going in a separate utility room. I've not had a dishwasher for nearly a year and I'm now counting the days till it is installed

HasaDigaEebowai · 17/09/2021 20:31

Dishwasher x2 in the kitchen either side of the sink with bins under the sink. Washing machine etc in the laundry. Spare freezer in pantry.

Chatterboxy · 17/09/2021 23:13

I have both, & although I have a sink in the utility room, I wouldn’t want to be taking my crockery, pot, pans etc in there, only to unload and transfer everything back into my kitchen cupboards again.
I have my washing machine & tumble in my utility room, but I have a door into my back garden to hang washing etc.

gingercat02 · 18/09/2021 11:56

@RobinPenguins

Mine’s not by the sink, I don’t pre-rinse. It’s next to the bin, for scraping any food waste off.

It’s also near to (but not directly underneath) the cupboards where plates, cups, glasses are stored.

This. We have a cupboard either side and 3 on the wall above. All the crockery and glasses live in these so easy to unload. We don't pre-rinse so no need for a sink nearby

Chasingsquirrels · 18/09/2021 17:01

I don't pre-rinse.
Any scraps either go to the hens or into the food compost bin.
Liquids get poured into the sink.

bouncydog · 18/09/2021 22:05

Dishwasher in kitchen, utility for washer, dryer, supersized sink for oven racks, etc and make sure you have a rap with a pull out hose for rinsing down.
