People who have a utility room and a dishwasher

Where is your dishwasher? Is it in the kitchen or the utility?

I was merrily planning to put it in the (as yet unbuilt) utility room, which will be off the kitchen, but it struck me that this maybe isn’t the best idea.

Is it better to keep it in the kitchen, close to the sink and wherever it’ll be stored? We have enough battles of wits about emptying it, to have it in a separate room may make that even worse 🤔

And laundry room should be upstairs if you're doing up your whole house.
I've just moved in to my house and there was a hall cupboard outside the bathroom upstairs - I'm getting it made 30cm deeper by taking space from spare room and putting stacked washer dryer in it. Makes so much more sense to have laundry where you have bedrooms. The alcove created by doing this in guest bedroom will be made into a wardrobe.
Currently the washer is in the downstairs loo - and as I have teens that means clothes are piled up in there too.

I would like to line dry when possible, so having the washing machine nearer the back door is useful, for carrying the wet washing out. The dry washing is lighter on the way back inside.

In the kitchen, next to the main sink

HeronLanyon · 16/09/2021 20:54

My head’s gone all funny trying to imagine living with a dishwasher in a separate room. (Respect to those on the thread who do and like it). I can’t imagine it. Then when I do - the mess, the dropped food, the dropped cutlery, the constant trudging with armfuls of dirty dishes and then trudging them back clean. !

@JudgeRindersMinder as per many pp - in the kitchen. we had our kitchen redone a few years ago, the kitchen designer talked about the 'golden triangle' which was made between the sink, the dishwasher and the cupboard/drawers that most of the crockery lived in. I could standing one place and empty the dishwasher just by turning back and forth.
Re you point whether to get an integrated one - we did and its one of my regrets - they are actually quite a bit smaller. our standard size dinners plates wouldn't fit in. We've moved now and are doing up the kitchen again. I won't be going integrated this time.

Ours in the kitchen , utility room has the washing machine , tumble dryer, microwave and the cupboards are home to all sorts of shit which DH says can't possibly be thrown away. I do get rid occasionally but it seems to appear again Grin

Mine is in the utility room and it's a nuisance! Wish I'd have put it in the kitchen!

dayakie · 16/09/2021 21:24

I had mine in the utility room and it was such a ball ache we moved it back into the kitchen. So much easier to load as you go.

WimpoleHat · 16/09/2021 21:25

Kitchen!

JudgeRindersMinder · 16/09/2021 21:29

It’ll go in the kitchen! @SisforSarah thank you for the heads up about integrated!

In the kitchen, next to the main sink

Our main sink is in the utility room - is that very odd? Confused

So much easier to load as you go

I've never been able to get this to work - it always seems to end up half full but with no gaps large enough for the next item. Do you have a particular way of loading?

Marni83 · 17/09/2021 13:54

Integrated anything is a ball ache to repair

So do you stack up dirty dishes etc all day and then do in one go?!

I see it as a jigsaw. Surely you have a vague idea what’s going to go in based on past experience? Ie dinner time is generally four plates and cutlery and two saucepan, lunch is two plates and a bread board, generally half a dozen mugs etc

bananapumpkin · 17/09/2021 14:01

@Marni83 Yes, which is why I like it in the utility room because the dirty dishes aren't visible.

Our usage is far more random than that depending on who's home and what we're cooking!

twinkie100 · 17/09/2021 14:04

As close to the sink as possible - so you can rinse and load without dripping across floor, and must be in the kitchen so you can unload easily into cupboards.

Ariela · 17/09/2021 14:06

If you struggle will filling/emptying, consider 2 to use as cupboards effectively. So you fill one with dirty washing up and then put it on, meanwhile you've been emptying the other of clean washing up. And repeat.

Preech · 17/09/2021 14:11

Kitchen. If you think of the natural flow of washing up, it makes sense. Smaller items into appliance, and only the big awkward ones, or fussy items like crystal or fancy knives, are left to hand wash.

Envious at utility room. We've sacrificed a ton of space in our kitchen to have a washing machine and tumble dryer.

Cissyandflora · 17/09/2021 14:14

@burritofan

I’ve only ever heard of dishwashers in the kitchen! If I had a giant house I might put a second one in the utility for overflow on big occasions like Christmas, but that’s “fantasy Rightmove remodelling” levels of planning.
I love this idea!
peachescariad · 17/09/2021 14:14

Dishwasher in kitchen next to sink (under draining board area), washing machine in utility next to second sink (for football, referee kits and dirty dog paws washing bowl)

Comefromaway · 17/09/2021 14:17

Definitely kitchen.

I don’t know about you
But I’ve been doing it for years and years
So i know what fits where

Is there literally no pattern?

Always roughly same amount of plates, mugs etc
Unless we have guests
Then I run it twice

Doesn’t the utility room pong a bit with huge pile of dirty stuff in there all day?

Ozanj · 17/09/2021 15:07

Can you have one in each? Really useful if you want to wash large pans as well as dinnerware

Notonmywitch · 17/09/2021 15:08

Unlessyou are having a sink in the utility, it would be a right pain having it in there

irregularegular · 17/09/2021 15:10

Kitchen. Absolutely no way it should be in the utility! You want it as close as possible to where you cook, serve, wash up - and store plates etc. Everything goes straight in and straight out with minimal walking.

balernobetty · 17/09/2021 15:13

Kitchen.
Utility room has washing machine, tumble dryer, extra freezer, under sink storage and storage for ironing board, vacuum etc
