Would this blue kitchen put you off buying a house?

We're in the process of getting a new kitchen from Howdens and like the look of Fairford Blue. We're not planning on moving any time soon, but we don't think this is our forever home either and may consider moving at some point down the line (perhaps in five years time). Would this colour put you off buying a house? We really like it, but would also be happy going with a more neutral colour. Not sure what to do, so your thoughts (either way) would be very welcome. Thanks! Here's a link to the kitchen on YouTube:

No I love it. I also have a blue kitchen.

SandysMam · 11/03/2021 11:23

I think blue kitchens will be the avocado bathroom suites of the future. If you don’t love it with all your heart, and plan to sell in 5 years. I would go for something neutral.

HaNNaHC92 · 11/03/2021 11:23

Not at all. I think it's lovely. It's actually a lot nicer than the usual wood, grey or white kitchens you see everyone having these days.

QuentinWinters · 11/03/2021 11:23

No but it may date. I'd consider getting painted wood rather than laminate doors so you can repaint the doors if fashion is very different when you move.

AdaThorne · 11/03/2021 11:24

I love it. But then I've just moved into a house with a kitchen with red accent walls and every time I walk in there I recoil and judge the previous owners. I guess that's the risk you take!

If you’re planning on staying around 5 years go with what you fancy. I wouldn’t let it put me off buying, especially as in 5 years use it is unlikely to get completely trashed. If I was buying a house with a 5 year old kitchen, I would maybe consider cost of changing cabinet doors etc. but unless it’s a very cheap house with kitchen to value ratio very skewed I wouldn’t worry too much. I.e. if your expected sale value is £60K and your kitchen is costing £15K it may be more of a consideration for the buyer than if your house is likely to sell for £250K with the same kitchen cost.

IstandwithJackieWeaver · 11/03/2021 11:26

Have what you want - kitchen units can be spray painted or vinyl wrapped when the time comes to sell if the colour is a sticking point. You could even get a quote or two to show the cost and not actually have it done.

Lazypuppy · 11/03/2021 11:26

I love it!

Scrunchy95 · 11/03/2021 11:26

It's nice and already pretty neutral.

ComtesseDeSpair · 11/03/2021 11:27

I don’t like it, but it wouldn’t put me off buying the house if it was ideal in other respects. It could be painted, providing the rest of the kitchen was still in good condition.

sqirrelfriends · 11/03/2021 11:29

I love it. Shaker style is pretty timeless so I don't think it will age badly. Looking at you black gloss cabinets.

AlCalavicci · 11/03/2021 11:29

I like it , it is not that far from the colour I painted my kitchen cupboards two years ago.

While I understand some apprehension regarding reselling your home as you are not planing to do so in the near future I really wouldn't worry about the colour.

If I look at a house to buy it's the location, structural soundness , age & condition of electrics/ boiler/ windows etc that have the main influence
As long as the kitchen units are still sound it wouldn't bother me that much what colour workers they can always be repainted and worktops recovered .

Fairystory · 11/03/2021 11:30

I like it but blue is my favourite colour. For those not so keen on blue, it is a fairly greyish blue and not too bright. I sometimes see bright red kitchens and could not live with that. If you plan to stay for 5 years just choose what you like.

Itsmemaggie · 11/03/2021 11:34

Not at all. You’re never going to be able to second guess what a buyer 5 years down the road might want. If it’s a good layout and well kept then most people will probably be happy enough even if it’s not exactly to their taste.

SleepingStandingUp · 11/03/2021 11:35

It's lovely

willibald · 11/03/2021 11:36

No. I like it.

SpacePotato · 11/03/2021 11:37

To me the colour is fine, I don't like shaker style doors though. To me they will always look dated anyway.

Get the kitchen you want now to enjoy for as long as you are in the house.

Unless you are a property developer or are moving asap, decorating with the thought of selling years down the line is quite sad. It's your home. It doesn't matter what some random imaginary person may or may not think in 5 years time.

Oldandcobwebby · 11/03/2021 11:43

Blue wouldn't be my choice, but as long as it was in a decent state it wouldn't be something that would put me off a house. You'd get far better quality units for the same or probably less money from DIYKitchens.com though.

LouNatics · 11/03/2021 11:44

You live in it! You can’t make decisions based on a hypothetical sale at some unspecified point in the future on behalf of a buyer you have never met and have no idea what they like.

It’s your house, do what you love to it.

Neptunesgiraffe · 11/03/2021 11:51

It depends what the state of the rest of the house is like. I'd definitely change the colour of the kitchen. I can see it's nice, by the way, but its not for me.

MazDazzle · 11/03/2021 11:53

I love blue. It’s my favourite colour! However, years ago I was going to choose blue shaker cabinets for my utility room and the kitchen designer said they’d ripped them all out of the showroom because they were dated.

Might be safer to go with a beige/mushroom colour.

SeenYourArse · 11/03/2021 11:55

It would put me off, I’d never have a blue kitchen.

Claudia84 · 11/03/2021 11:56

It’s lovely and will still look modern in 5 years.
I think in 10-15 years probably not but I suspect a new buyer might want to put a new kitchen in anyway

DareIask · 11/03/2021 11:56

Have whatever you like. Almost everything won't be to a buyers personal taste.

I love it btw. So much better than the usual grey

milinhas · 11/03/2021 11:58

I really like it, much prefer some colour to a beige / grey kitchen. Like people say replacing the doors in 5 years in a standard size from a company which is likely to still be trading should be very easy for you or your buyer if needed.
