Would this blue kitchen put you off buying a house?

We're in the process of getting a new kitchen from Howdens and like the look of Fairford Blue. We're not planning on moving any time soon, but we don't think this is our forever home either and may consider moving at some point down the line (perhaps in five years time). Would this colour put you off buying a house? We really like it, but would also be happy going with a more neutral colour. Not sure what to do, so your thoughts (either way) would be very welcome. Thanks! Here's a link to the kitchen on YouTube:

I don't get why people worry about what potential buyers would like when it's in the future - and not even certain you will sell. Decorate your house how it pleases you. Different if you were upgrading the kitchen then selling straight away but 5 years down the line and a maybe sell? No, put the kitchen in you like - it's you that's looking at it on a daily basis.

Maybe Selling in five years makes resale value a real consideration. There’s no point in putting something in that in five years will make it difficult to sell.

As said, I dislike it. A lot. And for me, any purchase of a house with that would inc the cost of replacement, and I’d be concerned about ripping out a relatively new kitchen. And having painted kitchen cupboards I know the longevity isn’t there, so it’s not a route I’d go down, nor do I wish to cover them in Formica.

I understand I’m in the minority, but the op has a valid concern.

Personally I love it and you should put in a kitchen that you love too - new owners might change it In the future but highly unlikely that someone would refuse to buy a house just because they didn't like the kitchen units. Years ago we sold an Edwardian semi - before we put it on the market we carefully painted it in lovely Farrow & Ball Edwardian type colours - the new owners immediately painted it all magnolia Grin.

Beaniecats · 12/03/2021 11:36

No I like it.

MuggleStudiesResearchProject · 12/03/2021 11:41

Looks lovely. Fwiw I can't stand white kitchens or overly neutral 'play it safe' decor. Go for what you love.

clpsmum · 12/03/2021 11:44

I love it

as someone who went for a blue kitchen all be it gloss slab i would have been delighted to have seen that kitchen in a purchase the one that was here was 1980s badly designed falling apart and hard work to replace

NotMeNoNo · 12/03/2021 12:27

Ideally I would want it to be repaintable, but that range is PVC wrapped MDF.

FurierTransform · 12/03/2021 12:42

It wouldn't put me off, but I don't like it so I wouldn't be paying any extra for it over a standard 20year old kitchen that's getting a bit tired.

happymummy12345 · 12/03/2021 13:03

It's a nice colour, I like it, it's different from what you usually see in kitchens.

CatkinToadflax · 12/03/2021 18:26

We’ve recently been looking at that exact kitchen but are probably not going with Howden’s. The company we probably are going with has cream kitchens that are much cheaper than blue for some reason, so we’ll most likely have cream and then accessorise the room with blue paint or tiles and a few blue oddments. Our first ever kitchen was blue though. I’ll always have a soft spot for blue! Smile

WildCherryBlossom · 15/03/2021 09:47

Hahaha Bluntness your user name is well chosen. However I would disagree about the "longevity" of a painted kitchen. I have a painted shaker style kitchen. It was done around 15 years ago and only now is it showing a little sign of wear around the knobs on the most used cupboards. I don't think that is bad, personally. We can repaint fairly easily, and if I wanted to neutralise it for sale that would be quite straight forward too (personally I love the colour of my units so I will keep it if we do repaint.).

WhatevBev · 15/03/2021 10:13

It's a nice blue!

If and when you do come to sell I don't think anyone will say 'I love the house but I won't buy it because the kitchen is blue'. Doors are really easy to swap.

I also think that a tasteful house with character is more desirable than a bland house that tries not to offend anyone.

DespairingHomeowner · 16/03/2021 23:09

I bought my new house BECAUSE of the beautiful blue kitchen... light blue is quite a neutrel / mass appeal colour (world’s favourite colour) and I think timeless, unlike eg grey or navy

dotdotdotdash · 17/03/2021 17:41

If you like blue, check this out:

Also, from living on Right Move lately, I can attest to the fact that there are a lot of dark blue feature walls out there.

Personally, I would go for a neutral (not grey) and get beautiful blue tiles as they are more easily changed.

Disfordarkchocolate · 17/03/2021 17:53

@dotdotdotdash that's a pretty poor kitchen, the oven and fridge look like they have been abandoned in the room by removal men.

LifesLittleDeciders · 17/03/2021 17:54

It’s beautiful- that kitchen would be a reason to buy the house for me.

Definitely a pro and not a con.

Alsohuman · 17/03/2021 18:31

I love blue so it would be a plus for me. It’s enough of a grey/blue to almost be neutral.

ineedaholidaynow · 17/03/2021 18:42

I like it

Gemma2019 · 17/03/2021 19:30

Just get the kitchen you love and enjoy it for the time you live there. I still regret going for neutral worktops instead of the ones I really loved, as we were only planning to stay in the house for three years and didn't want to put off prospective buyers. Eight years later I'm still here, hating the beige.

merryhouse · 17/03/2021 19:57

Anybody who cares about not having a dated kitchen will be planning on replacing it anyway, whatever it is.

Everyone else will be glad to have drawers that close properly.

Besom · 17/03/2021 20:00

It wouldn't put me off no.

3CCC · 17/03/2021 20:06

I love it 😻

I think it looks light and airy but adds a splash of colour

Suzi888 · 18/03/2021 22:43
