Would this blue kitchen put you off buying a house?

We're in the process of getting a new kitchen from Howdens and like the look of Fairford Blue. We're not planning on moving any time soon, but we don't think this is our forever home either and may consider moving at some point down the line (perhaps in five years time). Would this colour put you off buying a house? We really like it, but would also be happy going with a more neutral colour. Not sure what to do, so your thoughts (either way) would be very welcome. Thanks! Here's a link to the kitchen on YouTube:

It not a colour I would have chosen. If I were looking at your house I’d definitely think ‘hmm wonder what I can do’ - if paintable, no problem at all. If not I’d just put it into the mix.

Hallyup5 · 11/03/2021 17:58

I think it'll date but I was looking at the exact same kitchen only a couple of days ago. It's really nice. I'm so tempted to have it in my house.

The likelihood is that whatever you put in, a potential buyer will want to rip it out anyway. Much better to enjoy your home while you live there.

Lottle · 11/03/2021 20:31

Not at all. I do like it but even if not, it could easily have the doors sprayed if needed. I don't think any choice of kitchen cupboard would put me off a home really. If I liked it enough to move there and hoped to be there several times I could always try and fix it myself. Five years is a long time so definitely go with what you want. Unless you would be moving in say 12 months in which case I wouldn't change it at all.

MrsTophamHat · 11/03/2021 20:47

It wouldn't put me off. It's a lot nicer than the kitchen in the house I did buy and still have now!

Decorate your house as you see fit. It's not offensive and could be changed if a vendor was that bothered. But even 5 years is a long time to live in bland white box just in case some unnamed person in the future might like it.

PS i have never seen anything on this topic NOT be referred to as "dated".

Kinneddar · 11/03/2021 20:51

I don't understand this thinking of putting off future buyers. It's your home, buy/do to it what suits you or makes you happy, not what some prospective buyers might like years down the line.

Personally I think its gorgeous. If you like it, buy it & enjoy it

Neverspeakofthisagain · 11/03/2021 20:55

Whatever you put in now will have 'dated' by five years, in five years.

It's fairly neutral and easily changed. Put in what you love.

It always amazes me when I hear the kinds of tiny things people find off-putting when buying a house. To me, location, square footage, ceiling height and garden size, aspect etc are the only dealbreakers. Everything else can be change.d

There was someone on one of these threads the other day saying she woudn't buy a house with lots of pictures 'gallery style' in the hallway as she could't be arsed with all the removal of picture hooks Confused

So yes, there might be people who want to walk in to a house and have it laid out exactly how they want in the colour scheme they would have picked, but they are going to be looking for a long time.....

Have the kitchen you like.

Mummaofboys93 · 11/03/2021 21:18

I love it! Would not put me off at all.

Lurcherloves · 11/03/2021 21:24

I really like that kitchen

Honeyroar · 11/03/2021 21:27

@QuentinWinters

No but it may date. I'd consider getting painted wood rather than laminate doors so you can repaint the doors if fashion is very different when you move.
I’ve painted laminate doors in the past and it worked out really well.

OP I think it looks really lovely.

Roszie · 11/03/2021 21:28

I wouldn't pick a Howden kitchen as I don't think the quality is worth the price.

Personally although I don't mind it, I think we are coming towards the end of the blue kitchen trend so I wouldn't choose it.

littlelionroars · 11/03/2021 21:38

We have this exact kitchen and I absolutely love it!

I don't have any concerns about selling the house when the time comes. New owners can always change the kitchen according to their own tastes.

safariboot · 11/03/2021 21:42

No. I like it. I think a boring bland house would put me off more.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 11/03/2021 23:13

While I personally like that kitchen a lot - both the shaker units and the colour of blue as both are my style, I actually think it could put future buyers off a bit as the unit colour would really limit what other colours you could paint the walls or even what furnishings you could have (some colours would clash/look horrible with the blue).

If you are considering selling in the next few years, I'd personally stick with white shaker units and paint the walls that colour of blue instead. Most buyers won't be too intimidated by having to repaint walls, but having to re-paint or even think they may have to replace kitchen units can be more nerve racking and risks people thinking it will be a hassle or costly.

RedcurrantPuff · 11/03/2021 23:15

I like it. It can easily be painted if people don’t like it.

Bluntness100 · 11/03/2021 23:18

I dislike it sorry. I’d consider the cost of replacement in an offer if everything else was good in thr house, as I’d likely be willing to walk away if the numbers did not stack up.

So yes, for me it would put me off.

PickAChew · 11/03/2021 23:19

@tava63

I personally love it. Also likely that Howdens is around in 5 years so replacing doors could be done easily then if such a big problem.
Our house has a 15 year old howdens kit hen - had no idea until I unearthed a handle still in original packaging. Turns out they still sell the exact same doors!
Literallynoidea · 11/03/2021 23:20

It will date. Don't do it.

Labobo · 11/03/2021 23:23

I love it.

WindyRose · 12/03/2021 01:58

Everything colour has a use-by date, so don't think it won't go out of fashion! As someone mentioned ^^ think back to the Avocado kitchens etc some years ago. We had friends who built a new house and the 'whole' interior was Avocado although I never shared my thoughts at the time, privately I keep thinking 'what will that look like in 20 yrs time?' I always prefer to keep 'fixtures' to a neutral palette and add colour with accessories as these can easily be changed. Eg, in a bathroom, just changing the colour of the towels will make a huge difference.

While I like the style of kitchen in the photo, I really dislike blue (long story) but if the doors are painted, then if I was a prospective purchaser, I would get a quote to have the doors professionally re-painted, this can be done by any professional auto spray painter. However, if they are vinyl or a laminate this is not possible.

Would you consider an off-white or other neutral and have blue accessories....toaster/towels/etc.

I've been looking at real estate listings and found what I thought was the perfect house...but...the kitchen was a deep, royal purple and bright red with black oven/fridge/etc. Ouch!! It was so dark and horrible, but didn't have painted doors which would have meant a whole rip-out-and-replace and wasn't economically feasible, so it was bypassed immediately.

After many years of working in govt offices I really dislike grey but again it paint can change the colour it might be a possibility.

5 years until your 'possible' sale is not a long time. Just my thoughts and good luck with your decision.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 12/03/2021 08:42

@Bellringer

More money than sense
What???

It's a Howdens kitchen. Not a Fiore di Cristallo

Do you think she should be cooking over a fire pit & doing the dishes in a rain water bucket?!?!

foxhat · 12/03/2021 08:58

I really love it. It's great, white, red or black gloss which would put me off buying a house. I think the idea of a timeless kitchen is just a marketing ploy really. No kitchens from the 90's are desired now.

AmelieTaylor · 12/03/2021 08:58

@TravellingJack

I don't love it, but the colour is ok and the doors could be painted easily enough. However I loathe Shaker style - the little ledges and corners are just dust catchers and that would put me off, or make me consider a lower offer as I'd want to replace the doors. I also prefer handles to knobs so you can tuck a tea towel through them but that's probably me being slatternly Wink
@TravellingJack

I felt the same as you, I feel shaker is a bit dated, but I wanted a painted/paintable kitchen and I have been unable to find a slab wood door that's painted/paintable

🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️

So I think I'm going to have to get a shaker (but minimal frame)

No, but that is THIRTY years ago! 😂😂

I know, I know, time flies...

BestOption · 12/03/2021 09:20

You say we really like it I think you should get it (or one like it!)

I don't think it's 'trendy' enough to date badly, as in years to come you won't be able to say 'that's an early 2020's kitchen like you will with a dark blue. (And previously 80/90's kitchen). It's pretty neutral.

However, in 5 years, it will look 5 years old as will any kitchen.

Cream/non glossy white will be 'slightly' less dated, but your choice of worktops & floor will still 'date' it on some level.

It might not be everyone's first choice, but it's not like it's egg yolk yellow or red/black. It's an easy colour to live with.

However, as others have said, do look at DIY as the quality is much better.

They don't do a design for you, but they will have a look at your plan & help you snd they will check your order and let you know if they think you've missed something. Fitters like their kitchens too.

I like it. For me though anything high gloss is off-putting, and any whacky colours like red, or bright colours. That looks fairly neutral to me. Out of interest what is the price of a Howden kitchen roughly?
