Made wrong move out of London. Help me get it right second time...

The title says it all really. We moved out of London nearly 2 years ago to Dorking in Surrey. Its a pretty nice town, but we realised fairly quickly that it just wasn't the right fit for us, and after a lot of soul searching, we've decided that we'd like to move again whilst the kids are still young enough to get over it, with the aim of finding somewhere we can call home for good. There's nothing massively wrong with Dorking, but neither of us can imagine spending the rest of our lives here. There's just too many small elements missing and when you add them all together it makes one big reason not to stay. But I'm terrified of moving again and making the same mistake again. And there are just so many places we could go that I just don't know where to start. I'm hoping people could give me some ideas for places that might be a good fit for us, so I can start looking again?

We were really happy in London as we had a good circle of friends and a nice house, but we didn't really go into central London anymore and spent more and more time in our local neighbourhood. As more and more of our friends started to move out we had less and less reasons to stay and wanted a less hectic lifestyle for our boys. Now we've left, we are fairly sure we don't want to move back to London, but the move out has made us realise that there are a few 'city' things we can't live without that we're just not finding in Dorking. I'm hoping we can find at least most of them somewhere a bit greener and cleaner than London.

So negatives about Dorking for us have been that it's just a little too 'countrysidey' for us. We don't ride horses or have a dog or go mountain biking and we don't really feel like we quite fit in here. We've found the high street just a bit lacking in nice clothes shops and restaurants (especially non-chain restaurants, ideally ones that do brunch!), and it feels like a lot of stuff has closed down even in the 2 years we've been here. We've also really struggled to find a suitable house to buy here (we're looking for a 4+ bedroom detached period house with a decent sized garden within walking distance of the mainline station).

Ideally we're looking to move to a reasonably pretty and leafy 'commuter' town within an hour commute of London (preferably from a station with a minimum of 2 trains an hour) where you don't have to drive to do everyday stuff. Essentials include a supermarket, some decent cafes for brunch and lunch, some nice family friendly pubs, a private gym with a pool nearby, maybe a few decent boutiques and some facilities for kids like parks, playgrounds etc. Oh, and decent schools are a must. Other awesome bonuses would be access to Uber, a reasonable selection of takeaways, some decent bars/pubs and maybe a cinema.

Our house budget is reasonably health, and we're happy to go back within the M25 as long as it still feels green and leafy.

Am I asking the impossible?

East Molesey ? 35 mins into Waterloo but river and palace and parks on doorstep ? Or Hampton ?

Oliversmumsarmy · 18/05/2019 10:37

Going along the Thameslink from St Albans

Radlett area
Bushey
Aldenham etc
Elstree
Mill Hill

Or going into Euston

Kings Langley
Chandlers Cross areas

Some of these places are really green and leafy but with good commutes into Central London

HasThisSoddingNameGoneToo · 18/05/2019 10:47

Yes, but Reading gets Crossrail in December, which will cut the journey time to Paddington to 50 mins, Liverpool St in 60.

Reading to Paddington is only 25 minutes at the moment. 😆

MyThirdBestWig · 18/05/2019 10:48

Jump in or out. We're further out. DD has some friends who ride horses but it's just a hobby, they're not "the horsey set".

I would be factoring in stuff for teens to do, just as you are factoring in playgrounds now. All of a sudden they outgrow playgrounds and while I do get your point that you want them to have something bigger "out there", you don't want them kicking around for things to do for 8 whole years. Any major town or 'burb should tick this box though.

Oops, sorry Blush

Spandang · 18/05/2019 13:36

I’d be another vote for Reading; Twyford, Sonning, Henley on Thames or slightly further north to Pangbourne. A truly beautiful part of the world and totally accessible to London.

Chickydoo · 18/05/2019 13:41

How about East Molesey
Bridge Rd End, just by Hampton Court.
Lots of great cafes, a few shops. 5 minutes in to Kingston 10 minutes to Richmond.
Very easy to get to London.
Has advantages of being close to town, bushy park on your doorstep and great shops in Kingston & Richmond...a few great gyms/health clubs etc.
1.2 would get you a 3-4 bed house with a garden.

Winchester... www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-81338201.html

7OaksDad · 18/05/2019 15:42

Tunbridge Wells definitely fits the criteria you describe. Sevenoaks while a better commute ( better than Surrey options like Richmond if you work in the City) is smaller and thus has less shops and tends towards more chains eating wise.

Iloveantiques · 18/05/2019 16:08

Re plane noise in Kingston/Surbiton. When Heathrow is on Easterlies (30% ish of the time) there is increasing plane noise depending where you are. The planes take off less steeply so are still quite low even this far out of Heathrow. Check out Flightradar24. A third runway and new proposed airspace routes will affect more people here and in Elmbridge.

Anyway apart from that this little corner of Surrey is fab.

@7OaksDad

Shhhhh!

Iloveantiques · 18/05/2019 16:14

I'd buy this in a heartbeat.

If you want to be central something like this would maybe work. It's in a great location and can easily be turned into four beds.

sunshinesupermum · 18/05/2019 17:31

Bluntness That is so not a family garden!

WeepingWillowWeepingWino · 18/05/2019 18:08

It’s on a plot of over half an acre! How much garden does a family need? Or do you think that the design of a garden can never been changed?

Bluntness100 · 18/05/2019 18:29

Lol. If you can afford 1.2 million on a house, you can add some turf and easily turn that into a family garden. 🤣

lurkingattheback · 18/05/2019 18:33

Lots of my London friends are moving to Market Harborough. Train to St Pancras in around an hour, your budget would buy something special and cover commuting costs, but may be a touch 'countryside' for you.

TabbyStar · 18/05/2019 18:42

Market Harborough is v nice but no decent (private) gym / pool.

Schnitzelvonkrumb · 18/05/2019 19:07

You won’t be able to get a 4 bed detached in walking of the station on that budget in either Harpenden or St Albans

I used to live around this area and i think you could do for 1.2m. I would say harpenden seems more boring than st albans and probably less to do for older kids although both have very good schools and close to countryside.

Tabby Small gyms in town, plenty of personal trainers and then Kettering Spa, Rushton Hall, Pure and Homefield Grange within 20 mins drive.

Cobblersandhogwash · 18/05/2019 22:29

Berkhamsted, Tring, Abbots Langley.

Berkhamsted, Tring, Abbots Langley.

TabbyStar · 19/05/2019 07:51

lurking OP wanted a private gym with a pool, there are no decent sized (e.g. 25m) private / "nice" pools within 30 mins of Market Harborough for proper swimming, only hotel or spa type places with 13/14m pools.

Thanks for all the replies everyone. Food for thought! Rest assured, whilst we're not completely in love with this particular town, we are very happy with our choice to leave London and definitely have no desire to move back. I suspect that contrary to what some people think, many teenagers do grow up exceptionally happily outside of major cities. We aren't planning on moving to the moon, just a different town approximately 20 miles from London, so I think my boys will be fine. No matter what my feeling are about Dorking there is definitely plenty for kids, young and old to do here and I'm sure that's the case in most other towns of 20,000 people. Its great to hear that there are towns around London with the things we are looking for in them - I knew about Tunbridge Wells and Guildford but it has been lovely to read about so many others. I guess I've got a lot of driving around to do!

Oh, and actually it wasn't the 'green wellie brigade' I was referring to when I said it as too 'countryside' here. I actually meant that its very much a working countryside town and quite farming based. We're probably just looking for something a little more commuter, and a little less tractor if that makes more sense.
