How many times have you moved house, and why?

We bought this house as ftb in our early twenties, been here nearly 20 years and the time has come to move as we could do with a bit more space / another bathroom and would like a less overlooked garden.

I have moved 5 times while living with my parents, then to a wee bed sit at 16 for a few months and the last 19years i have stayed in the same flat.

Pythonesque · 08/10/2018 09:32

Mainly lived with my parents until I finished uni, apart from sometimes on placement. (Did help them with a short-term move out and back in when they extended the house)

Married, rented for 1 year then moved to UK. Short-term rental then bought 1st house. Found our current house unexpectedly just before 2nd child was born, he's now a teenager. Quite a lot of our stuff only came to the UK bit by bit once we had this house and some space!

My mother is now selling up overseas and moving (back) to the UK soon we hope. I'd quite like the "detached house in the country", ideally with an annexe she could stay in for visits / recuperation if necessary. We might be able to make my husband's commute easier, but where we are currently is also very convenient. Current plan is catch up with much needed redecorating to make our house feel beautiful again, and then decide properly whether we stay or investigate moving. I see it as 2 years or 20 years more here!

NoSleepTil2030 · 08/10/2018 09:39

Age 3 parents wanted bigger house
Age 15 parents divorced
Age 18 went to uni
Age 21 moved in with DP
Age 23 moved to bigger rented place with DP
Age 27 bought house with DP and moved again

No plans to move in the immediate future (now mid 30s)

TheSteakBakeOfAwesome · 08/10/2018 10:22

Moved almost yearly around rentals for most of my 20s. Been in this house 8 years (first place we bought) and in reality we've desperately outgrown it and should be moving on but I'm not prepared to put us in a financially insecure position with how the world looks like it's buggered lately.

We need another bedroom (ideally two - but no way we can afford a 4 bed near the kids' schools).

At least we bought when the market was right at the bottom so negative equity's never likely to be an issue for us!

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 08/10/2018 10:33

9 homes as an adult (inc university). 4 homes as a child.

Moves have been a mixture of student tenancies coming to an end, cross country moves for work, relationship breakdown and in one case a particularly crap set of housemates.

Mummaluelae · 08/10/2018 10:46

I've moved 6 times. Lived in 7 different places.
1st house family house
2nd house moved because parents separated moved with mum and step dad (private rent)
3rd council house with mum and step dad
4th council house downsized different area as mum and step dad separated and bro went to live with dad
5th shared accomadation with dp (mum kicked us out)
6th private rented had to love due to pregnancy
7th 2dc in bigger but cheaper private rented property

OnceUponATimeInAmerica · 08/10/2018 10:53

28 that I can think of/remember, but think there are probably others I have forgotten. Combination of parents moving, then uni for 5 years with landlords who kept selling from under me. Then my first few jobs were in different areas. Then I joined the Army and moved several times. Got married to a military man, so the moves continued, including us having to move separately and back together again at various points. Both now left forces and have been in this house nearly 6 years. Have spent most of that time renovating to stave off my itchy feet. Am very ready to move again!

CaseStudyResearch · 08/10/2018 10:59

Didn’t move at all from 0-18.
From 18-28, I’ve lived in 11 different apartments - we moved countries/locations a lot with work.

We’re starting to look to buy now, so hopefully we’ve not got too many places to move into in the future!

Not counting with parents or to university and back. Once to move in with DP (rented), once to move to another end of the country, twice because LLs sold up, so we bought and have been here 20 years now.

GobKnobbler · 08/10/2018 11:33

I make it 35...

IndieTara · 08/10/2018 14:00

3 times inthe last 6 yrs. 1st into rented flat due to divorce. Landlord decided to sell so had to move very quickly. Moved into 1st floor maisinette rental I didn't love but it was available quickly. Moved 4 mths ago as hated the area I lived in ( all the crims lived in my road.) Now live in the tiniest property in a very nice area but both me and dd lové it

schnubbins · 08/10/2018 17:18

22 times in 53 years

KateTTC123 · 08/10/2018 17:20

Every year, at least once, from ages 17 to 29, then bought a flat and was there for 3 years and have just moved into a house now. Moved country many times too; think I'm just restless! Well, I WAS; no desire to move again anytime soon!

DwangelaForever · 08/10/2018 17:22

We bought an apartment the year we got married, sold it last Feb and moved into a 3 bed as we were expecting baby number 2. Have lived here since Feb and haven't really settled tbh, FIL is selling his house we are considering selling up and buying it 🙈

DwangelaForever · 08/10/2018 17:23

I should say we bought our apartment in 2014

yomellamoHelly · 08/10/2018 17:25

As an adult, have moved twice. Both times because we needed somewhere bigger. (First from a one-bed flat to a two bed house when got pg. Second once we'd squeezed 3 kids into the other bedroom and everywhere was looking quite cramped.) Haven't moved far either time.

schnubbins · 08/10/2018 17:26

Same with me .Parents moved a lot for one reason or another. We moved countries as kids .Then I moved a lot as a single person .Moved countries again with my husband and kids and never really felt at home anywhere , always restless.I have been in my now home for 9 years which is the longest I have lived anywhere but only started to feel 'settled' in the last year.Must be getting sensible in my old age.

flowerycurtain · 08/10/2018 17:27

My dad has NEVER moved house. 71 years strong!

Penguinsetpandas · 08/10/2018 17:27

19 times I think in whole life. Third place bought.

itbemay · 08/10/2018 17:29

awesmum · 08/10/2018 17:39

32 times in my total life Shock I am in early 40's

MissDai5y · 08/10/2018 17:47

I hate moving but apparently have done it an awful lot compared to others.
Twice when parents were together, Twice with my dad but also Three university home during that time.
Moved to Northumberland and had Three homes there.
One in Newcastle then one temporary to move down south before one more permanent lodging.
I'm on our fourth since moved in with other half over 5yrs ago.

This will hopefully be it until we make a big move further south.

17... no.wonder I am sick of moving

BiteyShark · 08/10/2018 17:51

10 times (mix of rented and owned) since I left home at 16 and now mid 40s. However, I think this home will probably be my last.
