How many times have you moved house, and why?

jgm · 30/09/2018 20:18

We bought this house as ftb in our early twenties, been here nearly 20 years and the time has come to move as we could do with a bit more space / another bathroom and would like a less overlooked garden.

At least 12 times - three were international moves, others were because of careers and the rest moving to bigger house. I am NOT moving again - I hope. Two of the international moves were in a three year period - really hard work.

LemonysSnicket · 30/09/2018 22:39

Once at 18, then 4 times at uni and finally here... so 6

ginghamstarfish · 30/09/2018 22:44

37 at last count ... moved around for work, here and abroad, usually rent before buying in a new area. Finally unpacked all boxes now, been here 3 years but I don't get attached to a house now so would move tomorrow if necessary!

Titsywoo · 30/09/2018 22:50

Once as a child when I was 3 then after I left school at 18 I lived in various places (flats with friends, traveling etc). With DH we lived in 5 different rentals before buying this place 5 years ago. We won't be leaving here I don't think. We've done so much work to make it our own and it's in the perfect place.

Darkbendis · 30/09/2018 23:31

Since finishing Uni: moved back home with parents, then abroad for post grad studies, then back to parents' to save up, then moved to UK to be with DP now DH. First in rented accommodation, then our first place (maisonette), now in our "forever" house - at least until the children leave home and we might decide to downsize. So 6 times in 22 years (involving 3 countries)

foulmouthflora1 · 01/10/2018 07:02

Post university moved from my little bedsit to DP's (now DH) six bed farmhouse. After twenty years there we've just "downsized" to a five bed detached.

accendo · 01/10/2018 07:08

17 times and many more times to come-my husband is an officer in the airforce.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 01/10/2018 07:09

After uni bought flat with boyfriend, we broke up and sold.

Bought flat with new bf, now DH.
Sold flat to buy small London Victorian house.
Sold small London Victorian house for bigger London Victorian townhouse.
Sold Victorian townhouse for detached house in the country.

Will probably stay here for at least another 10 years which will put dc in their late 20’s and will downsize then. That’s the current plan anyway.

BillyAndTheSillies · 01/10/2018 07:17

Moved around while at uni but don't really count that because it's sort of a given.

Moved in to a flat with DH and moved in to a house 3 years later. We have been in our house for four years and will stay here for at least another 5.

DH's parents moved every 3 or 4 years, bigger house, better areas etc. But my parents have liver in the same house for 35 years. So I find DH's constant need to move a bit strange.

explodingkitten · 01/10/2018 07:26

7 times as a child.
Moving out
Moving to a better studio.
Moving in with boyfriend (hated the house)
Bought a house with boyfriend
Bought my own brilliant house after we broke up
Moved in with DH because he had more space than me and we wanted to be together.

13 times. I will be moving again next year, bought a house with DH. It's perfect for growing old so I hope that I'll stay there.

SweetheartNeckline · 01/10/2018 07:26

Moved from Kent to East Mids as a baby for dad's work, then twice more within a mile radius for bigger houses as we got older.

Moved 2 miles down the road as a FTB with DH in 2009. Chose an area with great transport links, good schools, nice little garden, 3 bed house. Had 2 kids by 2015 so moved across the garden fence to a 4 bed with larger garden and an extra reception room. We couldn't have extended and still got what we wanted for the extra £40,000 the move cost us. Very glad we moved. Would happily stay here forever and currently looking at extending to a 5 bed as DC4 arriving in spring. If we can't extend we'll move again once youngest two are in Junior school (2024 ish).

niceupthedance · 01/10/2018 07:28

About 40 times since I was 15. Was an unhappy drifter and only owned my own flat once then had to sell it. Currently moving due to horrible neighbour. I wish I could find a happy house :(

agedknees · 03/10/2018 19:42

17 times (forces wife and itchy feet). Last moved 2 weeks ago. This is absolutely the last move though. Getting too old for house moves now.

Bowerbird5 · 03/10/2018 19:57

As a child 0-4 I’m not a 100 percent at least six times including three countries. From one side of the world to the other.
From 4 -8 three times three countries.
8-18 x3 times two countries.
18 -20 four times three countries.
20- 21 twice two countries.
21 - 29 four times
29 another country two moves then 30 years in the same house. Not expecting to move again unless it is the graveyard!

Shopgirl1 · 06/10/2018 21:25

7 times by the time I was 18, then 6 times in uni, 9 times in the 18 years since uni, although I’ve been in the same house 10 years now as we bought it. About the move again shortly all going well, so 22 homes to date, soon to be 23. 7 moves includes changes of country also.

TwoBlueFish · 07/10/2018 16:14

About 10 times before I left home. 4 as a young adult (3 rentals, 1 purchase). 5 in California (3 rentals, 2 purchases), 2 since back in the UK (1 rental, 1 purchase).

Mostly due to job changes, relationship changes or needing more family space.

BeautifulPossibilities · 07/10/2018 16:20

I think 13 times or around that. Family marriages, divorces, jobs, education, etc.

lljkk · 07/10/2018 19:19

A huge lot of times I moved to get away from a housemate I didn't like. Not so good, but I guess that's me.
Moved 2x as a child & about 18x as an adult. We are probably moving within 2 years again (to be closer to jobs & nice city things). Been here 14 years which is longest I've lived anywhere.

BrickByBrick · 07/10/2018 21:14

Lived in one childhood house.

Move 1: University Halls
Move 2 + 3: University digs
Move 4: Flat when relocated - was a short term agreement (2 months)
Move 5: Shared bungalow (me and friend) - moved out due to damp issues.
Move 6: Shared house (as above) - moved out as she went back to her home town.
Move 7: House sitting (rent free) (4-7 was over almost 2 years)
Move 8: 1st house with dh (after we married)

I was never happy there, despite living there for 16 years, so we have recently moved. This, all being well, could be our 'home for life' as it has potential to meet our needs now and in the future.

annoyed1212 · 07/10/2018 21:34

5 times in 25 years. Once with parents when i was 10, the rest with DH as we live in rented accomodation so free to move around.

Echobelly · 07/10/2018 21:43
  • House I was born in, then parents upsized
  • Lived in house from 1981 (at uni 96-99)
  • I left at end of 2001 because I'd bought my own place in East London
  • End of 2005 let my house to move in with future husband in SW London,
  • Moved summer 2007 out because we bought a place together and we no longer needed to be on the opposite side of London as he had a new job in centre of town, out two kids were born there but luckily it was quite big as we ended up there longer than we expected
  • Spring 2015 moved to current house because we'd been needing more space for a while and had wanted to move about 3 years earlier, but each time we were ready, one of us lost their job! I think we intend to be here 20 years+

I moved 6 times whilst living with my parents( inc moving to uni) and then 3 times with husband. First was moving out of our university house ( ownedby husband) to our first house together near his new job, second time was whilst pregnant and needed a bigger house, third time ( to this house) was because our forever home turned out to have the most horrific, awful neighbours.
