How many times have you moved house, and why?

We bought this house as ftb in our early twenties, been here nearly 20 years and the time has come to move as we could do with a bit more space / another bathroom and would like a less overlooked garden.

I've moved at total of 6 times. 1st 3 was with my parents. Then moved out when 16 then moved again to a 2 bedroom at 17 then a 3 bed as of last week 😂

Howtodeal · 30/09/2018 20:27

10 times in 20 years, mixture of rented and owned. Moved because I wanted to, because I had to...because a relationship broke up, because of nightmare neighbours, to be closer to friends, because the house was too small...

Now hopefully in forever house (or 10 year house at least!), no plans to move at all at the minute. Finally have enough space, detached, neighbours are nice, good commute. I'm staying!!

Bunnybigears · 30/09/2018 20:27

Left home at 18 rented with friends for 3 years
Moved from there to house bought with my now DH lived there 4 years
Moved from there which was 2 bedroom into this house which is 3 bedroom because we were planning DS2

Atetoomanyjaffacakes · 30/09/2018 20:29

4 times in 7 years. Army

ParkheadParadise · 30/09/2018 20:35

Twice. I moved from my parents house at 18 with dd. Rented a 2bed flat for 15 years. Now live in a 5bed with DH for the last 8 yrs.

gregcal · 30/09/2018 20:47

We have moved six times. Five times we have traded up. The sixth time we down sized. Expect to down size once again sometime in the future.

Glitteryfrog · 30/09/2018 21:21

House I was born in
Moved with parents as a baby (They're still there 35 years later)
Moved out to university (three houses)
Moved to rented house with boyfriend (spent 6 years there)
Bought house - boyfriend is now husband (been here for 8 years almost)
Vaguely thinking about moving next year as we're running out of space and boring stuff like a garage would be nice.

SallyOMalley · 30/09/2018 21:26

I've lost count! I had moved three times by the time I was 7, then twice more before I went to uni.

Several houses at uni, then 6 houses in the last 20-odd years. We've been in our current house 9 years, and it's the longest I've been in one house in my life! (I'm in my late 40s).

SallyOMalley · 30/09/2018 21:28

Oh and reasons why: dad was in a job that necessitated regular moves, new relationships, breaking down relationships, new jobs ... Then back home with a husband and baby in tow Smile

DramaAlpaca · 30/09/2018 21:28

Since I've been with DH we've lived in four houses. A little two bed terrace was our first home, then we sold that & bought a 4 bed detached house. We sold that after five years because we were emigrating. In our new country we rented for two years while we found a site, got planning permission & built the house we live in now. I can't imagine moving again, but if we do it'll be to downsize.

Tomboytown · 30/09/2018 21:29

Twice as a child
3 in university
8 since then
Won’t be moving from this house

AwdBovril · 30/09/2018 21:30

Not counting university -
Moved out of my parents' house
Then in with DH (DP at the time), needed more space.
Then to a house with no woodworm!
Then to a house with a boiler that mostly works, & windows that aren't falling out...
And we'd like to move again soon, as it's too small now it's no longer just the 2 of us.

So, 4 times in 14 years.

fanomoninon · 30/09/2018 21:33

4 times as a child (2 for job moves by my parents)
6 times in rental (uni/early career)
On my third bought house (over the last 18 years): both moves for more space for growing family, the most recent one also for school catchments, I'm afraid

NotAllIndividuals · 30/09/2018 21:36

25 times. Moved for all sorts of reasons - work, family, house being sold. I'm quite good a packing now and for sure moving isn't the most stressful thing anymore.

moomoogalicious · 30/09/2018 21:37

16 times at least. First 7 was with parents, then various rentals with friends, a relocation where I moved 3 times in 3 months. The longest I've lived anywhere is 10 years which wasn't until my late 30s.

A580Hojas · 30/09/2018 21:39

As an adult post University

Move 1 into rented flat with boyfriend
Move 2 into rented flat with friends because had split with boyfriend
Move 3 into rented house with same friends because we wanted to live in a different part of London
Move 4 into flat with mortgage with 1 friend to get on property ladder
Move 5 into rented house in different part of country for change of scene/boyfriend's job. Kept flat on as in negative equity and rented it out.
Move 6 into a different rented house because the cunts who let their house to us initially put it on the market after 4 months.
Move 7 back to London to a rented house.
Move 8 out of rented into a small house with mortgage bought with husband.
Move 9 into a larger house with bigger garden (after 1st child) still here after 14 years.

MargaretDribble · 30/09/2018 21:42

8 times since we got married. At first we rented on short leases. We bought our first house 6 years after we got married, five years later moved again, 32 years later moved to where we live now.

SoyDora · 30/09/2018 21:45

So so many. In just the past 10’years since meeting DH I’ve lived in 4 different countries and 14 counties.
Mainly work reasons.

GreenMeerkat · 30/09/2018 21:49

Once.

Bought first house in 2010.

Bought second house in 2016.

Needed the extra room, better schools in this area, less traffic, less of a commute, closer to my parents (helpful for childcare).

Move2WY · 30/09/2018 21:53

20 times

1-10 before i was 16
11-14 during uni when I changed accommodation every year
15 post uni move in with bf
16 left bf
17 met future dh
18 nicer flat with future dh
19 bigger house because kids with dh
20 relocation to other end of country due to dh work

sdaisy26 · 30/09/2018 22:00

As an adult, 4 times since university.

First to a tiny rented flat when (now) dh & I moved in together. Then to a bigger rented house. Then we bought a house and moved again last year to somewhere bigger.

User5trillion · 30/09/2018 22:00

I think in almost 40 yrs I have moved 15 times. I lived in 3 houses growing up, a couple at uni, then renovated a few houses until I got to this one.

I used to love renovating and moving house but now I have kids its too much effort.

Also on a serious note I was pretty unhappy and was looking for a home. After meeting my now DH I realised that a home is something you make not move into.

As I am not renovating this house to sell quickly for a profit, its great to put my personal stamp on it and not paint everything magnolia!

SassitudeandSparkle · 30/09/2018 22:03

Four in total.

Once as a child, then three times - bought first property when we married, moved to larger property, relocated for DH's job. The larger property was our forever home and we all still miss it tbh!
