What is your opinion? If your child attends a private school and you noticed their teacher had tattoos up arms etc….

Would It bother you? Non offensive tattoos.

I’ve never seen anyone with tattoos and thought that they looked good but it wouldn’t bother me at all if a teacher had tattoos.

HowDoYouSolveAProblemLikeMyRear · 03/03/2026 20:28

I'd be a little surprised if they were on show (depending on which school).

Obviously they could still be the best teacher in the building, but I don't think it looks either professional or smart.

If they're swastikas and women/mermaids with unfeasibly large breasts, then it's a problem.

Otherwise, even the crappy watercolour ones that go blotchy, they're fine.

Why would a mermaid have unfeasibly large breasts? Surely they would be streamlined to reduce the water drag coefficient?

It would bother me…at a state school and certainly if I was paying for it.

The pupils have a dress code, so a teacher can’t be flouting it to such a degree. If a teacher had multiple piercings on the face, as in head, (that in my school no pupil would be allowed), I’d also think it A Bit Off.

Edited

A teacher would not be 'flouting' a uniform policy for children.

Children will have rules like no makeup, no artificial hair colour (thankfully, racist restrictions upon non-caucasian hair have mostly gone these days), no false nails (as nobody likes dealing with a kid who rips out her entire nail from the bed during PE - or the aftermath of a playground dispute where the nail wearer has gone for the face), no additional piercings (first aid for the lip/eyebrow piercings was terribly messy when they were in fashion and piercing places were less particular about the age of their customers), maybe no hoops (same), wearing a particular shirt, tie, blazer and trousers/skirt (preferably not as an arse pelmet).

Teachers, being adults rather than children, will have rules of their own which may vary.

You'd think so, but it's clearly not the case in many depictions

Why doesn't it look "professional"?
If they've qualified, meet their observation targets and all the Teaching Standards, then they are being professional.
Tattoos or not

I think that maybe those mermaids are ones that mostly do backstroke. They've clearly been equipped with additional flotation devices, after all.

DancyNancy · 03/03/2026 20:35

Nope. Would possibly surprise me but I. A good way.
My DD isn't in private school but I was still pleasantly surprised to see one of the teachers with a lip piercing!
Thought it was pretty cool and let's kids see we can express ourselves differently as adults too

YorksMa · 03/03/2026 20:36

Of course not! What a wild thing to say!

Yes, I suspect they're bouyancy aids.

Superhansrantowindsor · 03/03/2026 20:38

Pretty much everyone has tattoos these days. Whilst I don’t like the look of them, I couldn’t care less if a teacher or anyone else for that matter had them.

WhatDaHell · 03/03/2026 20:41

Not a problem

RememberBeKindWithKaren · 03/03/2026 20:43

As long as I thought their teaching abilities were great it shouldn't be an issue.

That said, I don't think tattoos look good on anyone. So at heart I think people who get them are crazy, but I'm an old fogey and most people don't feel the same as me.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 03/03/2026 20:43

Surely tattoos are only suitable for teachers in state schools? 😉

I don't and I'm old. Don't use age as an excuse.

Yeah, I’m aware the dress code is for children. It’s an analogy.

Pupils at my school couldn’t, for boys, have hair that touched their shirt collar. That’s not for safety, is it? But if a male teacher came in with a mullet, there would be a disconnect, wouldn’t there?

Why? The teacher is at work, not at school.

Wellthisisdifficult · 03/03/2026 20:47

No, some of the nicest, most intelligent people I know have tattoos. Exactly the sort of people who I think are good role models for my son.

Gloriia · 03/03/2026 20:49

Whilst it may not affect their ability to do their job, imo tats look so unprofessional and a bit daft.

DrMorbius · 03/03/2026 20:49

My DS has a PhD from Imperial University, earns north of £250k per year. As a post grad he used to do private tutoring. Guess what? He has tattoos.

ainsleysanob · 03/03/2026 18:37

No, because I’m not an idiot.

Oh, don't be so rude.

Gropha · 03/03/2026 20:49

Some teachers at DD's prep have small tattoos, eg on wrist or ankle. I'd be surprised to find a teacher had large sleeve tattoos tbh. All the teachers there are excellent at teaching and pastoral care, but they are also very professionally presented and some of them are a little bit glamorous and well-groomed. I always assumed it was to give the girls a role model.

MauriceTheMussel · 03/03/2026 20:51

MrsEmmelineLucas · 03/03/2026 20:47

Why? The teacher is at work, not at school.

Idk. It’s a bit “do as I say, not as I do”

And, to some extent, school is about teaching the real world and, whether you like it or not, some professions wouldn’t “allow” obvious tattoos. Heck, as you can see by this thread, some parts of society won’t tolerate or not recoil from a tattoo. People DO judge tattoos, so in preparing a kid for the worst of the real world, whilst the teacher is at work, they’re at work in a school preparing children for the harsh realities of life

Spidey66 · 03/03/2026 20:52

Tattoos aren’t my ‘thing’ but as long as they’re not on the face, head or neck (which I’m sorry don’t look professional) and they’re not offensive, it wouldn’t particularly bother me. We’re all different. As long as they’re doing their job properly that’s what’s important.

surrealpotato · 03/03/2026 20:52

Yes it would bother me (and I believe would bother most of the people on this thread who are saying it wouldn't bother them, if it was real life). It doesn't look professional and isn't appropriate for a teacher in a school, private or state. I'm saying this as someone with tattoos.
