Private school teacher with tattoos?

What is your opinion? If your child attends a private school and you noticed their teacher had tattoos up arms etc….

Would It bother you? Non offensive tattoos.

I was, but it's telling that some people think I was bring serious ie we live cheek by jowl with people who do have this attitude.

You're making a logical error. People thinking that you're serious doesn't show that "we live cheek by jowl with people who do have this attitude".

It shows that people think "we live cheek by jowl with people who do have this attitude".

What you're seeing is anti-private-school prejudice rather than anti-tattoo prejudice.

You sound like a right snob. I don't understand people's obsession with them but they are very common now.

I find tattoos revolting. Yes it would bother me. I'm not sure what I would do about it if everything else was in order.

It’s completely fine to not like tattoos. It’s a personal choice. But to choose to be bothered that your child’s teacher has them is a seriously judgmental, inaccurate attitude- it’s saying you assume people with tattoos must be unintelligent/unprofessional/a bad influence/bad at their jobs. When there’s simply no evidence for this. It’s small-minded and judgmental and is a sign of low intelligence imo. Would it be ok for someone to come on here and post that they’re concerned that their kid’s private school teacher is fat? Then for someone to comment, “I find fat people revolting. I’m not sure what I would do about it though”. No of course it wouldn’t. People would be up in arms…even though there’s actually way more hard evidence to suggest obese people are less educated than non-obese people. Why is it socially acceptable to judge tattooed people in this way? It’s not the 1950s 🙄

I agree with you. In a professional setting it indicates a lack of seriousness; that the person displaying their tattoos is more interested in their own appearance than in fulfilling a serious role. No professional should be employed with permanently visible tattoos (face, neck, hands), and displaying tattoos that can be covered should result in a written warning for the first infraction, and dismissal for any further offences. I have 33 tattoos (none permanently visible). I never display them at work. The West is in a rapid decline; visible tattoos in professional roles are only one symptom of the disaster.

I just spat my coffee out at your last sentence.
Are you really this dramatic in every day life??

dailyconniptions · 05/03/2026 03:23

Nobody's saying they affect ability to do the job. It's that they mostly look tacky and unprofessional (and blue and smudgy.) That's why they are asked to be covered in many roles.

None of mine are blue, smudge, tacky or unprofessional.

Tablesandchairs23 · 05/03/2026 07:13

What a ridiculous old fashioned view. It doesn't impact how they do their job. Stop being ridiculous.

I don’t believe you have 33 tattoos. You clearly just said that to try and give your ridiculous opinion a bit of clout. No one with a large number of tattoos would have this opinion, it’s ridiculous to pretend they would! Also if you did have tattoos you’d know it’s not about someone being more interested in their own appearance than their job! Tattoos are part of someone’s identity. Seriously, what is so wrong with self-expression? Why do we all need to be little carbon copies of each other? Even in the workplace..it’s so dull

What have tattoos got to do with her teaching ability is the question you should ask yourself!

It's like saying what have the right trousers got to do with learning ability yet schools tell us constantly it does, image and appearance matter apparently.

Surely that applies to teachers too?

Funny how people are happy to use phrases like "permanent decision" and "altering your body forever" and "can't see the point" about tattoos...

...but go mad when I say the same things about choosing to birth a child.

Wow, thanks for the unexpected likes, guys!

Just realised I forgot to add "aren't you worried you'll regret it in a year or two?" to my list. 😊

Ah so a tattoo is comparable to having a family? A tat permanently alters your body and children permanently alter your life, got it! Grin.

Thing is kids grow up and live their own lives unlike tattoos which you're stuck with forever. Have you seen a 50yr old with blue smudges down their arms or even worse a 'sleeve', it looks really silly.

I think teachers are leaving because of useless management not because parents expect the teachers to look professional and smart, as the teachers indeed expect their pupils to.

Sorry, but this comes across as incredibly snobby. Would you say this about a state school teacher? Sorry to burst your bubble but private school teachers are no more qualified than any others, in fact less so in many cases

Gherkinslice · 05/03/2026 09:41

Ihaveneedofwaternear · 03/03/2026 18:43

Is this a serious reply?

But you wouldn't know if they had a tattoo not visible. Does the OP wish every teacher to be stripped butt naked to check this out upon interview, and then periodically to ensure they hadn't rebelled, and hence dismissed? 🤣

Isthateveryonethen · 05/03/2026 09:43

My kids are in private schools. Top London ones. The teachers are very smartly and appropriately dressed. I would be a bit put off , but I really haven’t seen this.

Binding · 05/03/2026 09:43

It depends what the tattoos are. Visible OK. Offensive or political not OK.

As an aside, are young people still getting tattoos? They're so ubiquitous amoung their parents middle aged people. Neither of my mid 20s DC have them and afaik, neither do their friends.

GottaLoveDogs · 05/03/2026 10:12

I don’t like tattoos but my children went/go to private school and I didn’t/don’t care what their teachers looked like, I was only interested in their ability to teach. A couple of their teachers had tattoos on wrists and arms. I don’t think most parents will care about your tattoos OP.

GinaandGin · 05/03/2026 10:13

What a ridiculous thing to be pressed about

Binding · 05/03/2026 10:33

🤣 at all the posters accusing OP of snobbery, when in fact she is the teacher with tattoos.

It looks silly in 'your' opinion.

BarbieShrimp · 05/03/2026 11:25

I think it's more than "silly" to bring another new human into this perilous, human-oversaturated world with dwindling access to resources, not to mention potentially wrecking your organs, dating options and career. However, people still do it, and I have to respect that they probably have nuanced reasons for it that I'll never fully understand.

Still, I'd take an armful of "blue" tattoos over parenthood any day. Sure, tattoo fuzz looks a bit weird, but so do smile lines.

This is maybe laudable but is it really true?

Some posters seem uber keen to bang on about how open minded and non judgemental they are but it really doesnt translate into real life.

Workplaces have expectations re dress and appearance. As do different social settings and events. Some of it is related to being able to do your job well and safely - like hair tied back or short nails or safety boots and some of it is about cultural norms and respect. Turning up to a wedding in a football kit or swim wear would be seen as rude for eg. Turning up to work in a bakery with long false nails would be a food hygiene issue.

I definitely would care about inappropriately revealing clothing, visibly dirty nails or paint stained trackies on my child's teacher. I find it really hard to believe that others wouldn't.

I just don't think it is true to argue that anyone expecting people performing certain roles to look a certain way means that you're a bigot, shallow or any of the other insults thrown about in this thread.

And I don't believe the posters who say literally nothing would bother them about their child's teachers appearance. Nothing?

Edited

I can only say it is true for me and the parents I know from my children’s school. I really dislike tattoos, wouldn’t like them on a partner, wouldn’t like it if my children chose to have them, but for my children’s teachers, I genuinely don’t care about tattoos that are generally covered but may show in certain clothing. I wouldn’t be impressed with face or neck tattoos but I’ve never met a teacher with those. Even with them, if they were a competent teacher, I wouldn’t think any more of it. I don’t judge people with tattoos, I just don’t like how tattoos look. A couple of my friends have tattoos, I don’t like their tattoos but I still love my friends and obviously don’t judge them.

I’ve never met a teacher who has dressed inappropriately or had dirty nails etc. I’d obviously expect appropriate clothing and normal hygiene but that goes for anyone, not just teachers.
