What is your opinion? If your child attends a private school and you noticed their teacher had tattoos up arms etc….

Would It bother you? Non offensive tattoos.

I'm more likely to question the intelligence of someone who makes a spelling error.

Or maybe appreciate it was a typo?

MochaAndBiscuits · 04/03/2026 08:53

Unless they're covered in swastikas I wouldn't give a flying fig

I'm equally angry at schools forcing girls to wear trousers because of leery men and boys.

I think trousers or skirts should be personal choice. I was always fascinated why the girls rolled their skirts at my DDs all girls school.

My daughter was suspended for wearing trousers and quoting the equality act ( she was in her legal phase). The whole of the SLT wore trousers for business dress. The reinstated her.

It isn't an excuse. It's my opinion.

I can't see the point in tattoos.. I don't like the thought or the appearance of them.. Many people share my view.Of the people who do feel the same as me I suspect more I likely to be in the more mature age bracket. No evidence. Again this is my view..

I don't know. I know a good number of people in the older age bracket (50s-60s) who have decided to get their first and sometimes only tattoo. All people who didn't like tattoos themselves until they had a reason that getting one became meaningful.

People are usually shocked when I tell them I have a tattoo. "You so don't seem like the type!" I'm not really but then, there were reasons that were bigger than that. I quite like defying expectations and stereotypes.

@83048274j yes maybe. Just my opinion, based on my views and the people I meet. And the fact I know my kids are more open-minded than me. But no scientific evidence as such.

My experience has really cemented the 'never say never' for me. I don't really like tattoos but have learned to appreciate the ones that have a story behind them. My not being into tattoos did influence where I put mine, what it was and how big it is. You never know - maybe one day you'll have a situation where the meaning of one means much more than your dislike of them. Obviously I hope you don't.

I linked a paper on the subject of tattoo ink damage further back in the thread. Here is a more general article:-

Tattooing may trigger localised damage to the immune system

There is relatively little information on the long-term health effects of tattooing, but a couple of recent studies suggest the art form might trigger prolonged inflammation

Of course. But making an error also includes not proof reading. (I make errors too and know it's easily done. I only mentioned this one because it was in a comment about judging someone's intelligence based on their appearance.)

Gloriia · 04/03/2026 12:22

Schools just need to make their minds up. Either appearance and image counts or it doesn't and if they accept teachers with tats then please fgs stop fretting over the wrong trousers/shoes/skirts for pupils.

RememberBeKindWithKaren · 04/03/2026 12:44

@83048274j thanks yes I understand what you mean . Some of my friends I think have felt the same. I appreciate they can feel very necessary or meaningful in some how. I get that.

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 04/03/2026 12:48

I’m not a fan of tattoos personally but this wouldn’t bother me at all. Private schools encourage self expression in their pupils so I’d expect the teachers to be able to express themselves too.

Labelledelune · 04/03/2026 13:11

Wouldn’t bother me in the slightest, I must admit I used to think this way, probably indoctrinated by my parents, I then opened a restaurant and found tattooed people to be the nicest. What I do object to is teachers looking scruffy, I’m my day they were suited and booted which I think is more respectful. My children and grandchildren went/attend private school, no one would know who has tattoos as they dress accordingly.

Who the fuck proofreads their Mumsnet posts?!

Who the fuck proofreads their Mumsnet posts?!

Not most people - although I think a fair few might quickly skim through what they've written before they post, seeing as most comments I read don't have errors. But if you're making a comment about judging someone's intelligence because they have tattoos, I would think it's sensible to be extra careful.

MauriceTheMussel · 04/03/2026 17:15

You can be plenty intelligent and not know how to spell

Yes, it would bother me. Teachers are role models and I wouldn’t want my child permanently marking their body, so I wouldn’t want to see it on their teacher either.

Role models? I didn’t look at one of my teachers and think “I want to be like you”.

Chinsupmeloves · 04/03/2026 17:29

No, wouldn't bother me at all.

Expecting people who take a job as a teacher to never to do anything you wouldn’t want your children to do is ridiculous. They’re there to teach your children and have every right to a life like any other job. Is it any wonder it’s so hard to get teachers now 🙄

ForPlumReader · 04/03/2026 18:02

Are you recruiting or planning to send your child? Either way it's a ludicrous question.

Judecb · 04/03/2026 18:05

Not at all.

OldScribbler · 04/03/2026 18:10

There are infinitely more important things to worry about. When I was young, before time began, a tattooed woman was assumed to be a whore. No longer - which I find vaguely disappointing.

WorkerBee123 · 04/03/2026 18:13

Is this 1952???

PurpleThistle7 · 04/03/2026 18:19

I have quite a few tattoos. I don’t wear makeup and don’t particularly like the look of it on other people. But wouldn’t begin to think they were any sort of person for choosing to wear makeup.

But my kids are in state school so maybe I have no standards. Or whatever this post meant.

BarbieShrimp · 04/03/2026 18:19

Funny how people are happy to use phrases like "permanent decision" and "altering your body forever" and "can't see the point" about tattoos...

...but go mad when I say the same things about choosing to birth a child.

helenlsmith · 04/03/2026 18:38

I don't see how having a tattoo will affect their teaching prowess.
