What is your opinion? If your child attends a private school and you noticed their teacher had tattoos up arms etc….

Would It bother you? Non offensive tattoos.

Having tattoos doesn't stop a person teaching or being competent at their job, regardless if they teach in a private or state school.

WiddlinDiddlin · 03/03/2026 21:13

Nah.

Though thinking about it, i might be a bit judgy about facial tattoos. Not that I'd say anything, and I would evaluate their skills/teaching ability but it would make me think 'you are or at some point have been, an absolute fuckwit'.

And I say that as someone with tattoos down to her wrists that are visible all the time.

I once dropped some shopping while waiting for a bus and was struggling to pick it up, I heard a voice from above asking if I needed help. I looked up and saw a face full of tattoos and piercings but he was a lovely fellah.

It would still look a bit weird on a teacher mind

mondaytosunday · 03/03/2026 21:24

Nope. My kids private schools’s matron had a half sleeve and other tattoos and rode a Harley. Her uniform covered up most of her tats (I saw them all because we were friends outside school).

Gardenservant · 03/03/2026 21:29

Yes it would bother me. I hate tattoos, many people do but don't like to say. A teacher should set a good example and polluting your body with damaging chemical inks is not sensible behaviour. People who have tattoos are always very defensive but they don't realise how it can impact them negatively in many people's eyes. People with tattoos may be clean, but they don't look clean. I especially hate sleeve tattoos on chefs. Piercings are even worse, in the nose they are very unhygenic. I expect I will get lots of negative comments from people with tattoos. I won't be reading any of them.

Interesting! My children attend private schools and I am a teacher moving to a private school…I have tattoos! Curious if I should cover them up or not but thinking about when it’s hot!

Get over yourself!

Why do some people with tattoos think they are so interesting? No one cares.

Callalilly2016 · 03/03/2026 21:16

When I was a child I thought teachers were like robots and lived in the school and only came to life when we arrived at school. Then I grew up and realised they are human beings and have a life and interests outside of school.

The shock when you see one of them out and about in town!

Tbf, they are interesting in that plenty of people have replied to a thread on the subject

Yes, it would bother me. Teachers are role models and I wouldn’t want my child permanently marking their body, so I wouldn’t want to see it on their teacher either.

😂😂😂

brunettemic · 03/03/2026 21:43

Is this a genuine question?!

She sounds like a right laugh!

Catlady007007 · 03/03/2026 21:52

Honestly? If I/the kids could see them, I wouldn't like it. I'd prefer if they were covered. I certainly wouldn't like to see a teacher with tattoos on their face or neck. It wouldn't matter whether it was a state or private school though.

Pedallleur · 03/03/2026 21:53

Clearly this must be one of those failing private schools that VAT is crushing out of existence. Any decent school will have teachers who are pure of mind and body and have forsaken any temptations. Oh that's right, those teachers are turning up in Court after years of abusing children in their care. Think I'll take some tattoos over finding out your son was beaten/sexually abused etc

Cyclebabble · 03/03/2026 21:56

OMG, so many things that cause me angst with DCs education. A teacher with a tat is certainly not one of them. Made me laugh.

They probably don't care what people think of them, so nothing lost if the judging people take themselves out.

I'm not a fan of big tattoos or sleeves or full legs or face or neck tatoos. I wouldn't not be friends or colleagues with someone who had them though. I'll base that on their behaviour.

I would prefer my children’s role models to be someone who was kind, articulate, with integrity and intelligence, someone who valued education, with the ability to engage, inspire and teach young people. Someone who was talented in whatever field and had ability to encourage talent.

Diversity is hugely important, whether in terms of religion, skin colour, background or appearance (assuming they were clean and had good personal hygiene).

bigboykitty · 03/03/2026 22:14

Maybe get some real life problems? You seem to have brought the worst of mumsnetters out to play with their sneery attitudes and contempt for others.

Fearlesssloth · 03/03/2026 22:17

@bubblenance what would it make you assume about the teacher because they had tattoos? Honestly your opinion on tattoos is really outdated for someone I’m assuming is under 55 if you have kids still in school. It’s not a sign of someone being a dodgy fucker/been in prison/uneducated etc like it may have been pre 90s. Have you been living under a rock?! Tattoos really don’t tell you anything about a person these days, other than they like body art. I’m covered in tattoos and my dd hates them, says she’ll never get one, probably cos she’s trying to rebel or something! So if anything, your kid’s teacher having them is going to make it less likely your kid is going to want them!

LadyLovesShallots · 03/03/2026 22:22

If you are unhappy about it, I' suggest you make an appt and talk to the head teacher - they are responsible for recruitment.

I would not be that happy about it because it is frowned upon in many professional circles, like nose rings and other body piercing. Many schools have a dress code and having tatts covered is part of that.

I think you may be asking the wrong question here because most of MN members are 'younger' and tatts are the norm for their age group.

WaltzingWaters · 03/03/2026 22:26

Not at all.

Bedtimeread · 03/03/2026 22:29

My son goes to private school and no it wouldn’t bother me.

I think they should be burned at the stake. Maybe combine it with the annual 'flogging the peasant' as part of the outreach programme.

This really made me chuckle. Thanks for the laugh.

Well I have no tattoos so you'll read mine.

The doctor who operated on my grandmothers cancer had tattoos. As did the one who replaced my knee.

The chef at my favourite restaurant has a sleeve.

These people have brought joy to my life and that's all that matters.

If you fell off a curb tomorrow and broke your ankle, would you look a tattooed paramedic in the eyes and say "you set a bad example and by the way you don't look clean"

It wasn’t clearly a joke, so it was a very poor one.

why do you think a HCP is not allowed to call out bigotry?

It was pretty obviously tongue in cheek to me! And many others who replied with laughing emojis.

Your vehement reply was full of hyperbole, assumptions and a bit screechy tbh. And I generally prefer my hcps a bit calmer and moderate and not poised ready to be offended and bigot spot at every misstep by others. Many of your patients will be sexist, misogynist, racist, or even actual criminals. It's not for you to judge them (outwardly) as much as you're demanding not to be judged by them (outwardly). People can think what they like.

😂 😂
Because when your child is old enough to consider getting a tatoo , they’ll think back on their teacher that had one !!!
Once again , 😂 😂

What is the impact of having tattoos on teaching ability?
What is the relevance of private education?
Reflect OP
This isn't a criticism. I attended unconscious bias training in my workplace and found it very helpful.
Was a learning experience for me
