More than one child with same name in class?

My ds is starting primary this September just found out there will be another child with same name.
I do not want ds to be called his name and then his surname initial!
Any other ideas anyone.
Thanks.

What is his name - if Alexander or similar its likely one of htem will be Alex

Matthew - Matt
William - Will/Billy

etc

otherwise I think he's stuck with being "James B"

Your DS could use his middle name instead.

Your DS could be known by a shortened version of his name.

The other child with the same name may be known by a shortened version of his name.

My DS has a popular name - in his class there are two other boys with the same name (although they are both known by a shortened version of it) but DS is known as His Name Initial anyway and all is well

I fail to see the problem.

Is this your first child ??

KristinaM · 13/06/2008 16:54

there are two Emilys, Callums, Euans and Sophies in DDs class and they are called by their first name and surname

hana · 13/06/2008 16:55

mmmm
pretty sure that's what will happen, or they will get called
big insert name" and little 'insert name' or something else coined by the children or staff

or like the poor little boys at dd's playgroup - snotty nose "x' and 'x' (that's ob from her not the staff!)

buntyjajas · 13/06/2008 16:56

PFB alert !

Fillyjonk · 13/06/2008 16:56

why not his name then surname?

that seems better than the alternatives, tbh

Doodle2U · 13/06/2008 16:58

Eh?

Maybe the other child will be called by HIS name and surname initial.

Maybe they will both be called by their given names.

What you'll be called if you bring this up with the school, is anyone's guess!

unknownrebelbang · 13/06/2008 16:59

Just give him a whole new name before he starts.

gladbag · 13/06/2008 17:00

This is a common problem for parents and primary teachers.

I (as a teacher) always asked the parents of the same named children if they used a particular diminutive, or the full name and tried to negotiate it so that the children were called something different (eg. Ed and Edward, Jamie and James etc), but if they are both called the same thing then they will become known by the initial of their surname. I always made sure I just used their first name when talking directly to them, but for class organisation (calling out groups, directing children etc) you have to use the surname. I don't think there's much you can do about it.

(My last Reception class had 3 Harrys, 2 Edwards, 2 Jacks and 2 Williams....seems to be more of a problem for boys, not sure why)

jollyjane · 13/06/2008 17:01

Actually this isn't my first child and I don't really want my ds to be tagged with "his name and letter".
I think they may end up saying it is their name even outside school!
I know it may be the only way, however I just wondered if anyone else had other ideas.
It is a name that cannot be shortened!
Also how do the teachers decide which child will have the initial after their name?
Thanks again.

Have the other child removed from the school list before school starts. You can't do enough to prevent the awfulness of having your child known as Firstname X. Act quickly before it is too late and the damage is done.

Call your next one Plinth and this will not happen again

BreeVanDerCampLGJ · 13/06/2008 17:05

Snort at Doodle you and Cod.

hana · 13/06/2008 17:05

jollyjane - both kids would have their initial - James B and James C for example - it wouldn't be just one

Flier · 13/06/2008 17:05

i'd get his name changed by deed poll asap.
seriously, its not as if it will mentally harm him in some way, will it

both kids will have a surname initial ie Jack A and Jack J

Perhaps change your dsname by deedpoll to something you have made up and that is unusual or change schools?

I've got twins and there is another child in the class with the same name as one of them. Mine has his name shortened plus first letter of his surname and the other one has the longer version also with first letter of surname. Funnily enough there was no discussion it just happened and neither of us parents give a hoot to be honest. It makes me laugh that my boy even signs cards at home with his surname as so used to doing it at school. Can't believe I'm explaining all this as it is so totally and utterly irrelevant in the great tapestry of life but I'm feeling generous this afternoon !

Why is it a big deal though?

jollyjane · 13/06/2008 17:08

I usually just read all the rubbish and some good stuff that is written about on here and generally have a bit of a laugh now and again.
I decided I would see if anyone had anything to offer on this subject.
Clearly some people are just THICKOS who cannot see beyond their own little worlds!
HA HA HA, how funny this all is!
