More than one child with same name in class?

jollyjane · 13/06/2008 16:51

My ds is starting primary this September just found out there will be another child with same name.
I do not want ds to be called his name and then his surname initial!
Any other ideas anyone.
Thanks.

Ah yes! Of course, minority! That would explain the precious nature of OP's question!

misdee · 13/06/2008 20:12

Bernard!!!

its due a revival!

eekamoose · 13/06/2008 20:13

And I am 45 now and have two Jackies, 4 Claires, 5 Kates, 3 Toms on my phone. I am Jackie myself and married to a Tom. If I was worried about this I would worry about myself tbh.

MadamePlatypus · 13/06/2008 20:16

I have to say I completely agree with you about Bernard Misdee.

eekamoose · 13/06/2008 20:24

How very dare you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My Dad is Bernard.

Was born in 1929 though.

How about Reginald or Geoffrey (his two brothers)?

BlueDragonfly · 13/06/2008 20:25

have so far only read the OP. There are 4 with the same first name as DS1 in his class (none n th other reception class) they are given their full names - there are also 2 matthews and 2 something else as well

Doodle2U · 13/06/2008 20:27

eekamoose Sparklygokat (on here) has a rabbit called Presley IIRC!

georgiemama · 13/06/2008 20:30

Maybe if you hadn't called your child something so prosaic it wouldn't have happened.

Grow up.

BlueDragonfly · 13/06/2008 20:30

blimey! I wish i had read the thread thru! (i think DS1 maybe in a class with little rachs dd1)

DS1 LOVES that he has the same name as everyone else and finds it funny when his teacher mixes them up ( i think she may do it on purpose!)

misdee · 13/06/2008 20:36

if i have a boy, offically he will be called Isaac, but i will call hm Bernard

FindingWillBunting · 13/06/2008 20:39

Jolyyjane, have to ask why you don't want this. What terrible torment do you think it will cause.
DD1 and DS1 had same names as others so became known as name and surname inital eg AlfonsoP.So far both appeared to be unscathed from the experience. In fact DS1 has now demanded to be known only by his surname as have many of his friends, some of whom have opted to add an extra vowel to their name to increase their standing in the playground (SmythEEE /WeldO or my current favourite, O'BrienO. DS2, with a rarer name, also chooses to be known by his first name and surname inital. He likes this, says its cool. So I'd say go for it, add that inital and teach him how to swagger.

PussinWellies · 13/06/2008 20:40

He WILL be scarred for life.

My research supervisor was very pleased to inform me that he was responsible for another student with the exact same name as me. And the other one was a bloke. (Possibly his middle name wasn't Jane, come to think of it...)

WendyWeber · 13/06/2008 20:50

If he happens to be called James, once he hits Y7 he will be known as Surname anyway. It's the law.

DS2's Y10 friends include a Smithers (surname Smith), a Pruney (head shaped like one) a Mono (short for monobrow - self-explanatory) and at least 3 Jameses, all called Surname.

I love the way nicknames derive. DD1 has a friend from school called House; he is a James (so has to be called by his surname, as it's the law) and his surname ends in -worth. At his primary school another boy whose name ends in -worth was accidentally called the same name but ending in -house instead (eg Waterworth/Waterhouse) whereupon all children whose surnames were Surname-worth were forever called Surname-house instead; and once he got to secondary school it was shortened to just House.

I expect his parents still call him James...

misdee · 13/06/2008 20:52

all kids have nicknames, not always nice.

i was known by my surname.

my cousin was called Elf. no idea why.

eekamoose · 13/06/2008 21:01

Misdee - I know two very little Isaacs. But no Bernards. Gawan, I dare you...

LyraSilvertongue · 13/06/2008 21:04

DS1's class has two Jameses. Problem is their surnames both begin with H.
DS2's class has two Jakes, Maxes, Emilys, Louis, Olivers and Thomases. It's not really a problem.

Tommy · 13/06/2008 21:08

I worked somewhere where another woman with the same name as me was always referred to as "the other Tommy" because I was there first

She survived - honest.

Your child will be fine

FunkyNora · 13/06/2008 21:09

JJ if its any consolation, I have two SISTERS, yes sisters who have the same name. I do come from a large family, but that's not the reason. In my country of origin, you are named according to the day of the week you were born. Two of my 5 sisters were born on a Sunday and therefore have the same name, though spelt differently. As an aside, they have both now altered the spellings of their names but still reads and pronounced the same way!

LyraSilvertongue · 13/06/2008 21:14

That's so weird funkynora. Are there only seven names to choose from?

Doodle2U · 13/06/2008 21:16

I came across a woman with the same first and last name as me and she lived here, in the same town as me.

The feckin' dentist kept chasing me for her sodding bill.

My MIL has the same first & last name as a friend of hers and they are both with the same GP - they get each other's blood results.

My first name can be shortened to be a boys name and I prefer to be called by that name. Problem is, there is a boy version of me within our circle of friends - so same first name, same middle initial and same surname. I double checked we were not with the same GP for fear of having me ovaries confused with his prostate or other such problems.

RusselBrussel · 13/06/2008 21:16

I am at all the reference to these hordes of Emilys which seem to be in every school.
Dd is Emily and is the only one amongst the 90 children which make up the 3 reception classes in her school. There is also only 1 Emily out of the 90 in Y1, and there is another lonely Emily amongst 90 children in Y2.

ChippyMinton · 13/06/2008 21:34

On Radio 4 this morning they announced an interview with Dr Mel Gibson. She sounded lovely.

BlueDragonfly · 13/06/2008 21:36

Doodle what a confusing time you must have!!

indiemummy · 13/06/2008 21:39

I wouldn't have a problem with my ds or dd being known as 'jamesR' or 'emilyT' or whatever. those are not their names btw!

in the interests of public service we ought to compile a list of all the dodgy name-initial and name-surname combos to warn expectant parents-to-be

eg
Emma Grant
Dan D
Hank E
etc

who can think of any others?

AbbeyA · 13/06/2008 21:55

I don't see it as a problem. I always had at least one other of my name all through school and it didn't bother me. I would much rather have a traditional name than something odd or made up.
