More than one child with same name in class?

jollyjane · 13/06/2008 16:51

My ds is starting primary this September just found out there will be another child with same name.
I do not want ds to be called his name and then his surname initial!
Any other ideas anyone.
Thanks.

Interestingly no - Emily Smith is!

ChippyMinton · 13/06/2008 19:03

Sorry but at the OP.
My name is so popular I have never been in a class or work situation without at least one, or more often two, and on one occasion four others. It's never been a problem, it's usually been something we have bonded over.

Small aside no 1

I noticed in the voting lists for 42 days that there were 2 MPS called Tony Wright.

They were both referred to as Tony Wright (constituency name). Seemed quite neat considering surnames come from place names anyway.

Small aside no 2
My first name is not common

My surname is not common

I heard of and then met my namesake. It felt very spooky.

misdee · 13/06/2008 19:06

this is why you shouldnt call your child one of the names i nthe top 20.

always go for soemthig like Bernard instead. Or Frogmella.

savoycabbage · 13/06/2008 19:06

Well I totally see where you are coming from jollyjane and I wouldn't like it either. Just because it's not some massive traumatic problem people are being very unkind to you but there are loads of posts about people not being able to decide between getting a slide and a wendyhouse and people aren't telling them to get a life.

When my dd went to nursery there were two Harrys and she totally thought that Harry Robertson and Harry Green were their names and called them that al of the time, even if she was in her own house with only one Harry.

I once taught a boy who had a popular name and his parents called him Tiger (he was ginger) and asked that he be called that and he was. I was once supply teaching in Australia and there were five Madeleines in one class.

My neighbour has asked that her dd be called by her first and middle name to avoid being known as her first name and initial - but the school took no notice and my friend is not happy.

I think I would invent a nickname. It would totally help if you told us the name.

Next year I am due to have two girls with the same Christian names and the same surnames (unrelated) not sure how to get around that but we will. This year there are 7 Ellies and 2 Charlies luckily one is a girl and one a boy so the children refer to them as the boy Charlie or the girl Charlie...

ChippyMinton · 13/06/2008 19:11

Actually I have just remembered that the diminutive of my name coupled with the initial did lead to rather unfortunate nicknames for a couple of us, so you may want to check that out jollyjane.

clam · 13/06/2008 19:12

Sorry, OP but, as you've probably gleaned already, YABU and there's sod all you can do about it anyway. My daughter went from being the only MissClam in her previous school (450 kids) to one of 4 MissClams in her class in her new one. None of them seems particularly scarred by letters afterwards. Get over it!

when my ds first learnt to spell his name if I asked him to spell it he would say 'w-i-l-l-i-a-m dot h' Quite sweet really! Think there are bigger worries while they are at school.

savoycabbage · 13/06/2008 19:15

There is an active post about the environmental impact of limescale remover.

CrushWithEyeliner · 13/06/2008 19:15

absolutely PMSL at this, get real

Cammelia · 13/06/2008 19:23

jollyjane the reason people are responding how they are is beacuse there really is no way for you to have any control over this, it really is a non-issue.

You will make it into an issue for your child if you're not careful.

mynameisbond · 13/06/2008 19:24

God there are some cows on here tonight. Why can't she ask about this - just because she hasn't got depression or feels like her life is worthless you are pissing yourself at her question.

Doodle2U · 13/06/2008 19:26

Is it Hank E?

Or maybe Hank R?

C'mon JJ, give us a clue.

Cammelia · 13/06/2008 19:27

cows?

how rude

Doodle2U · 13/06/2008 19:27

Nice

RusselBrussel · 13/06/2008 19:34

Cows? nice!
No one has said she cannot ask about this, but the OP did sound a little precious, and seeing as this is something completely out of the OP's control it just seems a daft thing to get het up about.
And I reserve the right to talk about this without being called a cow or a thicko.

solo · 13/06/2008 19:35

LOL!!! When in my secondary school, we had 6, yes SIX Patricia's in one class!!! I think it was just a case of Patricia Smith, Patricia Jones, Patricia Green etc. No big deal at all.

Twiglett · 13/06/2008 19:36

George W ... splutter

maidamess · 13/06/2008 19:39

My son has the same name as another boy in his class and signs his full name on birthday cards and everything!

throckenholt · 13/06/2008 19:39

my boys share a class with 2 archies - would have been 3, but one moved. There are also 2 bens and a benjamin.

They all seem to be known by both first and surname - but oddly so are all the others . Very weird when they visit and my boys say eg "Tom Conner would you like a drink ?" I try and tell them he is the only Tom here - but they still call him both names.

There is nothing much you can do about it.

Blandmum · 13/06/2008 19:42

This is such a non issue. Not only is it a non issue there is honestly next to nothing that the op can do about it. A little light leg pulling went on and she called us THICKOS. Now you have called us cows.

Nice.

No-one is saying that you can only post on this board if you have major issues. God knows I post here for some light entertainment. But if you come across as precious and you can't take some gentle teasing, it is probably better to decamp somewhere pink and fluffy where the intellects are just so much sharper, I'm sure.

And MOO to you.

FFS!

savoycabbage · 13/06/2008 19:42

I don't see why people are posting about where to buy linen trousers but this OP is getting so much abuse for asking opinions on this. I just don't get it. Having said that I am a bit precious too I nearly passed out when I went to M&S and they had discontinued the school blouse I usually buy and replaced it with a more hideous version.

kiddiz · 13/06/2008 19:42

My ds was one of three Toms in his class. Mine was big Tom because he was and there was little Tom because he was and the other was just Tom. I once got called in to school to pick up my ill son. I arrived to find a very embarrassed secretary who, as soon as she saw me walking up the drive, realised she had got the wrong Tom's mum
He survived being called big Tom completely unscathed and I had no input in what the teachers decided to call him so not worth worrying about imo.
