Hello Caps44
what back up school options do you recommend for one's DS?
Hall
Hereward
St Anthonys
Belmont

We are attending a taster day at Ivy House next Friday.... Heard great things about the school and they have amazing 11+ results. I think they have an open day this Friday...

@RoundandRounnnd Not yet....we are waiting on UCS, Highgate and City this week. He did 6 in total.

Hello Caps44
What made you not choose Habs out of interest? What other 3 schools did you sit?
What is your back up option?
Thanks for all the useful advice to date.

We need advice on nurseries in the NW11, but for a separate thread.

@Caps44 Given he did not receive an offer (even WL) from the two other schools suggests that his feeling of being unwell may not have impacted the outcome (although you must have made a typo as in your original post you stated it was your DS’s friend who was ‘not feeling great’). Being strong in one area is not enough to secure a place at the aforementioned schools, as you know. And those other sought-after skills are not to be underestimated or undervalued.
Of course, it’s your decision what you choose to do. I just wonder what the appeal of these schools is when there’s credible evidence to suggest your DC may struggle academically within the setting.

trying to argue about someone's personal choices - with very little information to go on - does not seem at all appropriate in this forum

RoundandRounnnd · 22/01/2025 11:33

@dreamwork101 I’ve done no such thing. I've participated in a discussion on a public forum, which is completely appropriate. You appear to be the one attempting to provoke an argument.

Great thanks.
Forgot to mention, what about Hampstead Hill for 11+ preparation?

Hampstead Hill only goes up to 7+

Re; nursery, it depends on what you are after. We have had a good experience with Clowns nursery (both my children went there) and Kido in Golders Green. The former is much more structured and 'academic' stream (Manor House) helps with prep for those sitting 4+ exams.

Current year is the first year of its 11+ school.

Is there any point to go for 4+ or Manor House if our DS is summer born?

How does Clowns compare to Mulberry or Hampstead Hill?

I think that might be something for you to decide, however being summer born doesn't necessarily mean he wouldn't be successful. The schools acknowledge differences in age when children are being assessed (as at that age, a couple of months does make a big difference often).

Unfortunately I can't compare to Mulberry or HH as we didn't consider them and was happy with Clowns.

OK thanks, but I guess they wouldn't prepare for 4+?
I think it only starts at 2 years old though like Mulberry?
We need for 6 month year old, but a good local option nevertheless.

Clowns had really good results, especially with UCS last year, and year before.

What Anne Mount and the Avenue?

Hi all, thank you so much for all the advice so far. Still need to make a choice between kings and westminister. In either case we will have to move. Any more suggestions?

Congratulations! We have decided on a school that's not WUS or King's, so we don't have strong opinions about the two schools anymore, aside from the importance of the commute, which others have mentioned. If you're interested in another perspective, it might be worth noting that the competition for admission to WUS and Westminster for our sons' age group is likely to become more intense, especially with the transition to co-education. Conversely, King’s may offer a somewhat smoother path due to its grammar school competition and VAT. The applicant pool for WUS and Westminster will grow significantly, now including boys who are set on co-ed as well as girls. To maintain a near 50:50 gender ratio in the future, there will be a limited number of spots for new boys at ages 11 and 13, especially if they already have 44 boys by Year 4. I know a family that opted for WUS over other choices because, all else relatively equal to them, they feel that transitioning from WUS to King’s would be easier than the reverse, should they ever need to make a change later on.

Hey all, parents on the 8+ entry reserve list, do you have any movements yet?

Anyone received any emails, think quite a few schools are sending their result emails today!

Hi all, thank you so much for all the support in answering my queries. Don’t know what I would have done without this forum. Another question comes to my mind before making a choice for kings or westminister for 8+ - do you think the transition to grammar school will be ok for boys in independent school. Just thinking out loud in case our circumstances change and we are not able to pay the fees anymore. How prepared will the boys be at 11+ to give exams for grammar schools ?
