Is it considered slovenly to write names on everything or do I have to sew labels on like a saddo?

I have written names on so far for dd1 but she only had coat/gloves/scarf combo for playgroup

School 'strongly recommend sewn in labels'

will my card be marked as Sloth if I send her in with marker pen tags on her cardigan?

Sew labels on. You won't lose as much. My son is about to leave primary school and has only ever lost one item of clothing during his time there. Friends who use pen on side-seam labels seem to lose much more.

NeverTickleASleepingSoupDragon · 18/07/2007 20:10

"pen comes off in wash" Not for ages so just write it on again.

A sewn in label isn't any easier for a child to read than a name written in pen in capitals.

"'simply stuck' sticky labels and the clear shoe stickers to go over them have lasted all year"

I am more aghast at the thought that your child's shoes have lasted all year than the thought of shoe labels.

Just get a sodding pen FFS!!

Hulababy · 18/07/2007 20:20

I started off well with ironed in names on clothes and stuck on names on other ites. As year went on I quickly moved onto name in pen on the label. The pen has still to come off on most items. Much quicker!

Can't sew for toffee and dd's full Christian name and surname is 19letters fgs-how long would the bloomin' label have to be.

Life is just too short to sew in name tags-biro for me or at a real push-stiky labels.

popsycal · 18/07/2007 20:22

I bought sew in labels for ds1 last summer. they are still sitting in the cupboard as I saw a 'laundry pen' in mothercare!

I write the names in and 're-touch' every ow and then. works fine.

Kind of like the idea of sitting on an evening with a mug of cocoa and a roaring fire, lovingly sewing on the labels. But it is never going to happen.

Laundry pens all the way here

Although I did stitch a strip of name tape to his packed lunch box thing in a fit of domestic mania...

Why not just get the iron on ones?

Mistymoo · 18/07/2007 20:31

Haven't read whole thread but from experience of working in a school, it is handy if names stay on clothes (ie not able to wash off). It is very difficult to identify who the jumper that was left in the playground belongs to without a name!!!

I use iron on labels.

lljkk · 18/07/2007 20:35

Cor blimey, has this actually attracted over 100 messages?

I write names in, I check them regularly to make sure they're still legible -- not a hassle because I have to check regularly that the items brought home are actually my child's and not someone else's.

(Says she, currently missing 2 of DD's cardigans, grrrrr).

Biro is 1. Quickest, 2. Cheapest, 3. Most env. friendly.

I sew in surnames (MIL had some left over for me to use, wasn't that handy!? Would be a waste not to use them, wouldn't it?) to gloves and tights. Sewn in labels can be threaded out and reused a few times, too.

Troutpout · 18/07/2007 20:48

The iron on ones always seem to come off in my experience

And yes...you card will be marked olive

legacy · 18/07/2007 22:49

Given that I was emotionally scarred from the age of about 5 - I used to look longingly at my best friend's sewn-in name tapes - mine get clear sewn-in or stick on ones now

nooka · 18/07/2007 23:10

Mine get their surname written in biro when I remember. Sometimes I am sure that they come home with different clothes than they went in with, and ds loses pretty much everything (although this is because he can never be bothered to ask anyone when he does forget them, so things have been known to sit in lost property for weeks) but they are yet to arrive home without shoes. I had sew in labels when I was at school - my mother made me do the sewing!

mumbleboo · 19/07/2007 10:48

We had a party at mine during 6th form and in the morning after clean up we discovered my friend's sock. We knew it was his because his mum had sewn a name tape into it!

ChudleyMintonCanons · 19/07/2007 11:21

had a boyfriend at college with nametags in his underpants . He had come from boarding school though, in his defence.

mine start reception in september, I am actually LOOKING FORWARD to sewing the nametapes, makes me feel like a real British mummy. Saddo but proud .

[But the blazer badge is beyond me and has been delegated to MIL, who is chuffed to bits to have yet another reason to feel superior to me.]

Jenkeywerewolf · 19/07/2007 21:20

Has anyone tried the iron-on woven labels from easy2name.com? They look too good to be true - all the class of a woven cloth label but can ironed on.

EricGallagher · 19/07/2007 21:35

Am I a complete wanker for seeing this thread, quickly glancing through active convos then settling down with an Onken Mousse to read all about iron on labels?

What has become of me?

Blu · 19/07/2007 21:39

Could I just interrupt to say that in schools which have no uniform, name tapes are largely redundant because each child can immediately see which is their jumper?

Such a relief.

Ecmo · 19/07/2007 21:41

Jenkey - I use the easy2name ones they are brill

frogs · 19/07/2007 21:45

Ah Blue, I've scored a double whammy because dd2's new no-uniform school request that you label every item with your child's name. And knowing dd2's penchant for swapping her clothes for the patently superior clothes of every other child in sight (she's very good at it, extremely sly, and has even been known to hide her own inferior items in other kids' spare clothes bags) the only chance of us actually having anything dress her in 6 months down the line is if I follow their instructions and getting down and funky with the Cash's name tapes. Boo.
